A retro-inspired 2D Action RPG set in the distant future. CrossCode combines 16-bit SNES-style graphics with butter-smooth physics, a fast-paced combat system, and engaging puzzle mechanics, served with a gripping sci-fi story.

Don Cheadle Approves!!

Extremely well made, beautiful game with a novel premise. I did not enjoy playing it at all thanks to the characters, writing, plot, grinding, bloat and quest design but your mileage may vary.
A Sci-Fi RPG with incredible vibes... but it is FAR from without problems
Who will enjoy this game? You will need these 3 boxes checked:

You like fast-paced action combat
You like solving puzzles, especially Zelda-like puzzles, puzzle platforming challenges
Strongly recommended: You have played an MMORPG before
The Steam page doesn't say anything about the story premise, so I will give you a quick one (don't worry, these are very very early minor spoilers, like first hour early): The setting is a combination of Westworld and Ready Player One. That is, the game is set in an artificial MMO world theme park, on a real, existing location, a distant moon named Shadoon. The in-game developers set up an MMO playground there called CrossWorlds for people to connect to via a headgear from all across the galaxy, the system materializing a low-density physical body there as their Avatar to remotely control. You take the role of one such new player named Lea, who somehow lost her memories in real life, but hopes to recover them by playing CrossWorlds again. That is why I believe having experienced an MMO before is important, as the game builds on the concept of MMOs, using many in-genre jokes, systems, behaviours you just wont understand well without prior MMO experience. The highlight of the game for me were definitely the big puzzle gauntlets combined with combat challenges and boss battles in each region, they are extremely well crafted and fun. The combat is mostly fluid and satisfying, with lots of options, gears, and elements to use and switch to on the fly according to enemy weakness, or combat situation. You can get loot and upgrade materials by both grinding mobs, or puzzle platforming, so if you lean to just one of those, it is totally a valid route for gear progression. But the puzzle gauntlets at the end of each region are NOT optional. The main story is genuinely very good, however it needs like 20-30 hrs to really get going, so yeah, not the greatest pacing I have seen, but well worth the time investment. The characters you meet along the way are well written and fun, you will grow close to quite a few of them. The side-quests are more or less standard MMO style short quests. Nothing too fancy or super interesting, but they will give you good XP and decent rewards.
HOWEVER, there are several things I expressly do not like about the game:

For a game so heavily building upon puzzle platforming, it is way too often NOT clear which elevation you are standing on, compared to platforms on other elevations. The forced 2D world is really doing a disservice at making that really unclear on the first glance. It gets really annoying, especially if a misjudged jump results in a long runback. You can shoot a projectile at the platform to check, but it is a band-aid fix.
Arbitrarily locking platformer loot behind story key items. From the very first area, there are numerous puzzle platforming loot locked behind such locks, which is so lame. You just figured out this parkour challenge across two screens, but NO, you cant open your reward at the end because the dev wanted you to come back later for this particular chest...Who thought this was fun honestly?
The Map and the UI. It is not THAT bad, just pretty barebones and frankly outdated with lots of QoL missing or annoying gimmicks. Items doesn't have separate icons. The Map is just crude, it feels like it was an afterthought.
The combat consumables... the way they work is far too annoying. When you start to eat one, you are rooted in place for 2-3 seconds, making you a sitting duck in combat scenarios where there are 3+ enemies or something fast attacking. Worse, if you get hit, your consumption is interrupted, leaving you without the boost/heal AND also HP down the drain. And also you have to wait 10 seconds before you can use the next consumable in combat. If it were just for the heals, I could understand it. But it applies to ALL boosting items too. All these artificial timed roadblocks makes the otherwise fluid combat fragmented and just tiring.
Having played the devs next game, Alabaster Dawn's demo, they have learned a lot from CorossCode's flaws, and ironed out the aforementioned issues. Even though CrossCode is very good, Alabaster Dawn seems to be a much smoother and more refined experience.
Fun game didn´t think I would like a game like this.
