Great start, but becomes a frustrating chore in the late game At the beginning, I had a blast. The early game is linear, fun, and easy to pick up. Even when the game introduces automation and resource management, it feels balanced—you don’t need to be a hardcore nerd to get what you need to progress. The breaking point is the Desert and Ice biomes. The difficulty curve hits an absurd wall, turning the game into pure grind and frustration. Common enemies have 900+ HP and take 4 to 5 hits to kill, yet they can delete you in just two hits, even if you have a solid build with 700+ HP. I tried everything before quitting: dodge builds, armor, melee, ranged, magic, and stacking high-tier food buffs. Nothing worked. The game is completely unforgiving; a single mistake costs you half your health, forcing you to burn through dozens of potions just to explore, followed by hours of tedious farming to replenish them. We play games to have fun. If someone wants a punishing "try and error" experience that feels like a second job, that should be optional by raising the difficulty. Instead, even on Low difficulty, the late-game balancing is merciless and poorly tuned. It’s a shame because the foundation is excellent, but it simply stops respecting your time.
Core Keeper combines many gameplay elements from different genres in one game. That makes it a lot of fun and keeps you hooked. Unfortunately, in the endgame you notice that all these different areas ultimately lead nowhere. One example is the automation with conveyor belts. What do I actually need thousands of resources for that I produce there through automation? They pile up by the thousands in the box and barely help you in the further course of the game. The automated farms are fun, but in the end they aren't really needed. The armor sets show a similar pattern. Especially in the recent updates, it stands out that not all classes have been given new gear. That means you can't really play the class you actually want to, but in the last section of the game in particular you're pushed into playing the intended bomber class in order to progress effectively there. What Core Keeper needs, in my opinion, isn't more content in the sense of new areas. The game world is already well covered. Instead, more should be gotten out of the individual areas. It shouldn't be the case that the resources I farm in one area are only needed once, to reach the next stage, and never needed again after that. The elements already in the game should be deepened and made more refined, especially in the endgame. The path through the game is fun, but in the endgame you quickly notice that the gameplay loop wears thin. If Core Keeper focused precisely on that, it would be very welcome.
Core Keeper feels like Minecraft and Terraria had a love child, and I mean that in the best way possible. Exploring the underground, building your base, fighting bosses, and upgrading your gear is a lot of fun. It captures the creativity of Minecraft while adding the progression and boss-focused gameplay that makes Terraria so addictive. I wouldn't say it's the most replayable game once you've experienced everything, but the journey itself is absolutely worth it. It's especially enjoyable with a small group of friends, where everyone can take on different roles and explore together.
Welp...I have 877 hours, I guess it's time to review. I...LOVE this game. Whether I'm trying out something new or just messing about while listening to my favorite spooky podcast Core Keeper has become what I call a "Comfort Food" game for me. Perfect for mellowing out after a hard day.
The beginning is great but you hit a point where it's like "So.... What now?" Well "What now?" is basically aimless exploration to progress unless you decide to lookup where to go next. For me, this was the Iron Age. I Figured out which biome I needed to explore and harvest resources from and then once again hit "... So what now?" This kind of gameplay works in games like Terraria, or even MineCraft (which both still have a similar problem) because after you've built a little base you ask "So what now?" and the answer is fairly obvious. Dig down. And you know you're on the right track because of all the new and dangerous things you discover. but in this game your already underground, so it's just like "Eh, head a cardinal direction and maybe you'll find the biome YOU NEED to progress. And if you don't, I guess just head the other direction". There's nothing In-Game that hints at or points you in the direction of where you should head to next, other than "Which biome are you getting your teeth knocked out in, just a little less?" I need a bit more to go on than that. Game looks amazing and once you build a nice base in a pretty biome with some skylights it's a great place to chill out but that's where I lost interest. It's called "Core Keeper" but I never once felt like I was "The Keeper of The Core" more so just a guy who built a base kind of close to it and had to go look for stuff to put into the core to escape. Also, when you step on a bug you get this great animation where the bug kind of explodes like you just stomped on it, but when you kill enemy they just flash and *poof* disappear. Stepping on harmless bugs is more satisfying and visceral than slaying actual hostile enemies, and that is super lame.
Amazing mix of many great games like Valheim and Terraria. Many weapon types, biomes and ways to build. 100% recommend.
