What I expected: a newer Jane's 688(I) Hunter/Killer. What I got: a not very interesting version that is worse in terms of handling and mechanical depth. What's good about it: -It looks a lot better, but not to the point that it's mind blowing. By modern standards, I'd call it passable to good at best. -torpedos have interesting behaviours when either detecting a decoy or losing track of target, leading to tense situations What's bad about it: -The way ships are detected is frustratingingly simplistic. If a contact is close enough/loud enough, it will be marked on the map in an approximate position. A meter fills slowly, and depending on sensor conditions, sub speed and proximity to the target, it fills more quickly or more slowly. Aditionally, the player can use a spectrogram to determine the ship type and gain data more quickly. As the meter fills, the information on the contact becomes more certain. This system is very simplistic and barely requires player input besides the strategic choice of which direction to turn, and which target to focus on for now. From a submarine simulator, I would have expected more, or at least more systems where the player receives a bonus on detection when actively doing something. -The towed array is entirely passive in the sense that the player has absolutely no control over it. It's just always on. -Some important controls (such as time control) can only be used with hotkeys. Time control is also limited to normal speed and accelerated speed (which is still too slow for many situations). -The map view, which is where most of the game takes place, is an expanded form of the minimap. The 3D view of the game remains open in the background, meaning that ingame sounds can be heard from the 3D view. When clicking on a contact on the map, the 3d view switches to that contact, leading to a complete change in ambient sound. This feels more like someone didn't expect the map view to be the most important part of the game they were developing. -Campaign modes have a larger map, where the player drags around their ship on a map. This may be intuitive, but there isn't any depth to this part either. Ship speed doesn't matter. Detecting very faint distant contacts doesn't mattter. Listening around doesn't matter. Traveling depth doesn't matter. It's a matter of point and click.

This game is as close as you can get to the old game via MicroProse called The Hunt for The Red October. That game was amazing and this game follows that to some degree. I have played a fair number of submarine simulation games and overall tactics wise and fun this one is the best. This is now an older game and I purchased it when it was new. With over 500 hours of time playing you will not be disapointed. It plays as an action game and strategy game at the same time. I just don't think you will be disappointed with this one.
I've owned and played all Silent Hunters-Crash Dive and U-boat. some have been present games to play. Others have made me tear my hair out!! I've only played this Sub game for 8 hours, all in the tutorials and have had a"BALL"-- meaning fun!! The game is enjoyable -you don't have to be a naval admiral to play.
if you've never played a realistic submarine simulator sort of game, cold waters is definitely the best one to start with in my opinion. it's realistic enough that learning about actual real life anti-submarine warfare will make you play better, but it's simple enough to control that you don't have to bother learning anything if you don't want to
As many others have already stated, the game puts you "Supposedly at 25kyds. Next thing you know, you are right next to a ship, and you get torpedoed by as many as 20 torpedoes as soon as you get into the game. This has happened in 7 of the last 8 games I have played. I will NOT recommend this game! No ship captain would take control of his ship when they are in the MIDDLE of the enemy. TOTALLY UNREALISTIC and give you the player NO CHANCE.
None of the sneaky hunting feeling that I was hoping for. Shotgun torps at the onset of every mission. Refund requested.

Really fun and great sub warfare game, I think the game is great especially with it's more realistic approach and with DOT mod on top of it all, it makes this one of the best sub games to date. 9/10 I can't wait for their next title release of Sea Power
comparing to simulation named "Dangerous Waters" This game just an action arcade, nothing to do with simulation. even with realistic mods still dissapointing
