liked the first game. did not like this one.
Thoughts on Broken Reality 2000, largely relative to the original. I think both are absolutely good games in their own right and strongly recommend both. -It feels a lot angrier at the state of the internet than Broken Reality, and rightly so. BR's focus was on the vapourwave "melancholy nostalgia" feeling of the old net, whereas 2000 is focussing more on both the early 2000s and the modern internet landscape, with likes becoming secondary to cold hard cash in some areas, multiple cargo cults, a few returning characters being largely bit players, or lost to conspiracy and grift, and much less of a hopeful atmosphere overall -This more angry approach and clear dislike for the internet as it exists, versus OG Broken Reality being sort of inherently hopeful for the internet because of the chosen visual theme (vapourwave nostalgia largely being a lamentation for what the internet could have been/was being more pro internet by default) does create a strange feeling of not knowing which aspects of the game that I didn't entirely gel with were intentional. One area (♥♥♥♥ the Crypts) is just genuinely pretty bad, but otherwise many issues feel thematically appropriate in the ways they create friction and frustration, emulating the modern net. -The gameplay is quite jank, maybe give it a week or two to pick it up so the major issues get fixed. I never got softlocked or had to reset, but from what I've read I'm relatively lucky in that regard -While I think the games artstyle is very appropriate given the subject matter, I'd be lying if I said I didn't prefer Broken Reality's look overall. There's definitely still a few "wow" moments, but I don't think anything's taken my breath away quite like AQUANET or the city from the original, except maybe the first look at NEXUS -The moment to moment story is largely a bit farcical, with some interesting things going on under the surface. I'm very much playing for the feelings I get from it though. -I think the ending is weaker, which is a shame as Broken Reality has one of my favorite endings ever. Overall, I have a lot to chew on thematically, and while I prefer OG Broken Reality, I think 2000 is a very worthy sequel.

Bookmarker
While I did have (some) fun playing this game, the bad really outweighed the good for me. The aesthetics of a lot of the environments, and the exploration and secrets were pretty good. But the decision to add these characters/subjects to the game, together with the many bugs and softlocks I enctountered completely ruined it for me. In the end it just did not capture what made the first game so special.
A digital rainbow refracted in a crystalline circuit board in a hacker's mainframe. A subtle sway of iridescent palm trees on the beachy shores of a dystopian neon cyber city scape scattered with Soma junkies and psychedelic casino carpets. This game reminds me of Jet Set Radio Future, Parappa the Rapper, Hackers, Tarkovsky's Stalker, Neuromancer, all mixed with the insides of my neon-addled hyperactive brainscape. I have been playing this game non-stop. Its this perfect mix of nostalgia with current commentary, the funny references to each and every piece of media in the last 30 years have kept me exploring and wanting more and more. There are subtle ouches like the spatialized audio and the slow moving gradients that make you feel totally immersed in the game. There is basically a beautiful song for almost each and every room and area, I just want to hang around to hear the entire thing. They have this way you giving you items that can change they way you interacted with previous areas that makes for endless playability. I keep on feeling like I've found some glitch in the game (reminds me of like Half-Life or Halo type glitches), but they are all intentional. These folks have put so much love and care and thought into this game its truly mind-blowing.
Broken Reality was one of the best indie games I've ever played. The sequel is no exception, I haven't even left the starting area and I'm already so immersed in the Natem world and excited to discover new areas. So simple but so fun, just love the characters and world.
This is a tough one for me. I loved the first game and it's immaculate vibes, but this just doesn't hit the same highs that the first one did. Don't get me wrong, I had fun and I think people should play this, but it definitely has problems. First, and this is just a personal preference, I don't think that this game's vibes are as immaculate as the first one. The vibes are definitely there but nothing comes close to something like Geocity from the first game. Second, this game is very buggy (at least as of right now). Third, the walk speed is SO SLOW, especially for how big some of these areas are. The fact that there's no run button is insane to me. Getting the hoverboard was an absolute lifesaver; I personally think that the player should get access to it earlier. Finally, this whole game feels almost directionless until the end. Maybe it's just me, but I didn't really get what the player was trying to achieve the whole time. There were some threads here and there but most of them were loose and some of them didn't lead anywhere at all. In conclusion, it's a good game but it needs some serious fine tuning.
I absolutely loved the first game, but this one seems like it didn't really go in any new direction and actually feels far smaller in scope than the old game. Something that was really fun in the previous Broken Reality was all the quirky weird characters and the main story arc, but this has none of that. There are no memorable characters that continue to appear throughout your journey, there are no long and interactive conversations and the overall plot really doesn't come up very often, so it just feels like you're roaming around endlessly to solve puzzles with no feeling of them being actually needed storywise. Overall the game is okay, but it pales in comparison to the original and I'd argue this has very little replayability compared to the first game. The only real positives I found were a few quality of life improvements over the previous entry but that's not really enough to make the game actually fun.
This is a game I so badly wish I can give an average review for, neither fully positive nor negative. I played the first game back in 2024, loved it, had some issues with backtracking but everything else was very fun. This one, I feel like the backtracking problem was even worse, and the camera photo sections giving likes led to ending up not focusing on the game itself and just making sure I scan everything for the correct photo spot. The story, I think, was much less... prominent? There? I got the ending without the medallions and was interested in the ERROR character but she didn't seem to say a single thing, and the 'True' ending didn't really say anything at all either. There was very little character interaction compared to the first game.. As it is, I think the music is awesome, the environment design is wonderful and a facet of a time online that I'm personally deeply nostalgic for. I had a great time with the overall game, I just feel like it's lacking in a lot of areas that I would rather have seen more fleshed out.
"Mid, Mid, Mid. Skip, Skip, Skip." - Poopypants Drake I enjoyed the first game but the craziness of this game was very unfortunate to see. The introduction of the new and old tools from the game was very nice to see. I also loved the scenery and aesthetic, the story was ok but did get hard to follow towards the end. My main issue lies mostly with the gameplay. The puzzles felt like they lack context in many areas and there were late introductions to new mechanics, especially towards the end. There were grammar errors in a few text too as well, but those are more easy to get by. I was looking forward to this addition, but my disappointment is immeasurable.
