Ys IX answers that age-old question: “What if Adol Christin was a member of My Chemical Romance?” And honestly, I love it. This time, the game takes place mostly in Balduq, a huge gothic city rather than an isolated island. I understand why some people don’t find the setting as interesting as the Isle of Seiren in Ys VIII, but I absolutely love the gothic atmosphere. More importantly, the traversal makes the city incredibly fun to explore. Once you have all the Monstrum abilities, running, gliding, teleporting and grappling your way around Balduq is ridiculously satisfying. I also really liked the main story. The pacing is one of the game’s strengths: the story beats are well spaced out, there’s always something happening, and the overarching mystery is surprisingly interesting for a Ys game. It kept me wanting to see what would happen next. The cast is another big step up. The characters have actual depth and their own stories, and I found myself much more invested in them than I was during the first half of Ys VIII, where the main objective often felt like “go find another castaway.” And then there’s Adol actually having a few lines of dialogue! Super cool. After all these years of mostly silent Adol, hearing him actually speak feels weirdly exciting. The combat is still fantastic. Fast, responsive, flashy, and ridiculously satisfying. The soundtrack is good—Falcom being Falcom—but it doesn’t quite reach the heights of Ys VIII’s absolutely phenomenal soundtrack. The graphics are fine. For those unfamiliar with Falcom, they’re a relatively small studio, so don’t expect cutting-edge visuals. Personally, I don’t mind that at all. I’d take great art direction, atmosphere, music, and gameplay over bleeding-edge graphics any day. Ys IX may not have the exotic beauty of Ys VIII’s island setting, but it has a personality of its own. Great combat, a surprisingly compelling story, a strong cast, fantastic gothic atmosphere, and one of the most fun traversal systems in the series. Not quite Ys VIII for me, but still an excellent action RPG and worth playing. Ys IX: 8.8/10

10/10
Good and fun game. If you are coming from YS 8 you will be right at home. Unfortunately, raids are back, with different name but similar format, lots of mechanics from 8 are back actually. The new part is that you and your characters have like a superhero secret identity with special powers. Story wise, very anime as usual, but it a good way I guess, world ending event that you have to fight. Slightly shorter than 8 I think. What I didn't like is how buggy your companions become while exploring, they keep getting stuck trying to climb up a wall, or keep jumping into a cliff. Visually might feel outdated considering this game came out on 2019, but that is a personal take, Totally recommended IF you like anime cliches, you don't mind visuals AND, of course, you like ARPGs.
I have already finished the game on the switch. This game is amazing and the pinnacle of Ys. You cannot go wrong with it.
Really good 7.5/10 game. I played on Lunatic difficulty and it was definitely still pretty easy with the game devolving for the most part into a flash guard(parry) simulator much like Ys VIII, but I'd say the overall boss quality and level design was much better. I hope that for future games however they really start focusing on the gameplay again like with the best Ys games being Ys 1, 2, Origin and Oath In Felghana(highly reccomend these games for Max difficulty gameplay) or at the very least rework the gameplay system in these party games to the point they don't need to give invincibility to Flash Guarding or Flash Moving.
The gameplay is fun and succinct. The story is good, but not as good as Ys8 for me. All around, I'd say the game is objectively better than 8, but I just enjoy the vibes of 8 more. Would recommend.
