Xenonauts is a strategy game in which you control a multi-national military organisation defending a Cold War-era Earth from alien invasion, using small squads of persistent soldiers to eliminate the extraterrestrials and recover their technology in turn-based ground combat.

Look, i would really like this game. The foundation is here and it has ben a lot of fun. BUT there is a relly big problem. Ufo assault. Ufo are designed to have 1 entrance(or a couple) and no way around it. Long corridors where your squad has to take multiple reaction shots only to try to take a foothold. You fave to charge into enemy fire without any strategy or alternative way. Yes, you can use grenades, yes you can use cover. There are many tactics, BUT, having to do it EVERY SINGLE MISSION, is just too boring and frustrating. The original X-com and the firaxis one AT LEAST, had the ability to breach enemy ufos or find another tactic that is not SPAM EVERY SINGLE GRENADE YOU HAVE AND HOPE FOR THE BEST. I really would like to like this game, but a game is a game and if become a chore EVERY MISSION, then is not more a game i wuold recomend.

Good strategy, played lots of hours with it. I recommend and awaiting for part 2 :)
не трепите себе нервы. ты с одного метра попасть не можешь, зато противник с другого конца карты делает тебе ван шот!
This is one of the WORST games I have ever played, and since I am 70 and have been playing games since my comodore 64 days, that is saying a lot. I have had my guys run up to a alien, put a gun in their chest, and miss?? I counted one time, 54 consecutive misses, while all 8 of my guys died. Taking a knee sure did not help my guys hit, and it did not affect their shots. Its the same old 90% of their shots hit no matter the distance, even through building, even though they could not possible see them, then when your down to a man or two, suddenly they start to miss? And in every fight I would take up all the alien weapons I could, but they never got into inventory, you actually have to build them, not the 500 you took off of dead bodies over the years??? I put them in my backpack to make sure I had them when I got back, nope vanished. There is SO much wrong with this game that I do not have room here to put it down, and certainly not the time to do it.
Really hard to decide If it's a positive or negative rating. EDIT: Changed to negative. Needs balancing. Positives: -It's a modern clone of classic xcom with some minor changes. -It's got classic difficulty where sometimes you just have to pick your fights and not engage. -The shields are an interesting tactical addition. Negatives. -COVER!! Very annoying when there is a spindly tree blocking 100% of your fire and you have to walk back and forth to find the exact 1 square where you can thread the needle. But of course the ai knows exactly where that spot it. Or there is a group of daisies that you thought was just ground details but is actually stopping 26% of your tank shots per daisy. The best maps are the ones with the least cover. -UI is poor in many places. I don't think they did customer testing during production. -Crash sites are very repetitive. Sweep map, Form up on enemy ship. Throw gas or explosives in depending on enemy type. Classic xcom did much better here, maps were more varied, enemy ships were varied, often had random walls missing and enemies didn't stay still inside as much. -Enemies started feeling repetitive very quickly, there is usually (always?) just 2 types per map. This means it lacks the suspence of classic xcom. Once you've seen 1 enemy you know exactly what your in for. -You can blow up 2 walls in a wide building and everything inside will instantly die; given mid game weapons can easily do this it's way too easy and another reason to avoid maps with any features or interest at all.
Firstly, the base game is awful, actually unplayable. The community edition makes it nearly playable. Combat is just strictly speaking awful, enemies can snipe from anywhere and you cant even see them. The aliens know where you are 24/7, you don't know where they'll be or are. The LOS of soldiers is ridiculously small and having to spend TU to just look around is incredibly stupid. It would be far better to widen it or make it free. No undo button, so one mis-click with it's awful control scheme can immediately end things. This doesn't even feel unfair or like this is supposed to be a punching up situation, this just feels broken. Mechanics are poorly explained or implemented. Cover is useless. Shots change TU cost at random. This has worse RNG then Xcom's barrel stuffed aliens dodging shots. This isn't a game of tactics, it's a game of masochism.
After going through around 100 hours of gameplay, failing miserably for the first 60, using a guide on my next run, failing miserably again, and then finally succeeding, I'd mostly recommend this game, it's like Xcom UFO defence, the old one, though there's a few grievances I have, For one, the machineguns in the game have wicked spread that isn't shown in the preview of where your shots will go, and will frequently tag and kill teammates that stand within a good 25 degree cone in front of your machinegunners. In certain parts of some maps, there are spots where aliens can see you, but you cannot see them, even if both of you are within visual range of one another, some bits and corners of the map like to hide things around them that you can't properly see, but they can. A few of the techs are usually best to skip, but I think the same is true in the original Xcom And there's a "suppression" mechanic which isn't a grievance, but it does stray from original Xcoms and goes more into xcom enemy unknown/xcom 2 style of things. Otherwise, it's largely similar to the original Xcom, albeit, more grounded and realistic in its worldbuilding and tech. Apart from that, it's pretty much Xcom UFO defence, and borrows quite heavily from it, with some of its own twists and such.
This game gets a "Not Recommended" from me simply because there's no to resize the text game fonts for a 4K resolution monitor outside of installing a now-defunct mod or having to mess around with the pre-game launcher during setup. There is nothing wrong with the game's concept, its mechanics, its execution, or its artsyle. I've enjoyed my time playing this game but cannot, in good faith nor being of sound mind, ask that you buy this game if you have poor eyesight and/or have a monitor capable of handling a 4K resolution. This isn't a minor complaint, either. This game wasn't meant to be played at 4K; everything is weirdly zoomed out to the point where trying to decipher what's going on is a problem, which will lead to frequent misclicking and tactical errors that will sour your enjoyment of this game. This is not some peeve of mine that I am projecting; this is an issue of accessibility (or the lack thereof) that is, in 2025 going on 2026, inexcusable--we're not buying the game as it was in 2014, we're buying it now. With money we have now. Not having scalable UI when the resolution was nearly two years old is a black mark against this product. Thankfully, the sequel seems to be much better than its predecessor in this regard. Buy Xenonauts 2. You can actually tell what's going on and can actually read the UI in 4K. You can actually SEE what you're doing. TL;DR: Don't buy this game if you have poor eyesight and/or a 4K monitor. There are no ways to fix this problem outside of a defunct mod.
This game has a lot of potential to be amazing! and I would recommend it for others if the game wasn't throwing the same type of missions for me everytime. Also, the alien AI can be annoying, you see, when facing the extraterrestrial threats, we would expecting them to be protecting their UFO from a defensive position, ready to give their lives for their cause. And, yeah, they kinda do, but they do it by camping in the corner of the door and taking reaction fire at your men, efficient? yes. But it's kinda of lame. Fortunately there are good mods that make this game much better, (Fire in the Hole, community edition, etc.) And these mods are the reason that made me follow the campaign to the end and beat the hell out of the Praetor. But again, a game shouldn't be dependent of it's mods.
