World of Tanks is a tactical action game with very different gameplay depending on the vehicle type and role. Aside from regular PvP, there are competitive and clan-based modes, special PvE and PvPvE events, and much more. Whether you play to dominate or just enjoy the ride, you'll fit right in.
Revenue comes from in-game items and microtransactions, which our price-based model doesn't estimate. The player count below is how many people own it, not what they spent.

About
World of Tanks offers something for everyone: Try different tactics, vehicles, and modes!
World of Tanks has a unique pace. Its armored vehicles are fast enough to draw you into the action, yet slow enough to give you time to think strategically. Good reflexes are always a plus, but it's smart and bold moves that can really turn the tide of a battle. Identify a weak spot in the enemy team's defense, move to an advantageous position at just the right moment, or ambush an opponent—and you'll feel like a champion.
The unique pace is yours to control: there are five vehicle types that each play very differently. Generally, light tanks rely on their speed and stealth, heavy tanks on their armor, and mediums on versatility. Tank destroyers (TDs) are feared damage dealers, and self-propelled guns (SPGs) hurl shells at enemies from afar, using an RTS-like view. Almost every one of the 800+ highly detailed vehicles, spread over 11 tiers and 11 nations, feels special.
Begin with classic tanks and progress toward mighty high-tier machines. Adjust their performance to better suit your unique playstyle with crew perks, equipment, and Field Modification. Top that off with visual customization: showcase each vehicle's unique flair with custom paints, styles, and a wealth of other options.
World of Tanks has received multiple and extensive upgrades to its graphics and physics since its launch in 2010. The maps feature unique landmarks and plenty of destructible objects. Vehicles get wet when in water, and they receive shell breaches from enemy rounds that penetrate, as well as pockmarks from rounds that bounce off. Guns and shell explosions have authentic, caliber-dependent sounds, and the acoustic environment is very rich, adding to immersion.
The basic mode is 15v15 Random Battles. Prominent regular modes include Onslaught (7v7 with extra special abilities), Frontline (30v30 on colossal maps with lots of tactical options such as airstrikes), and Steel Hunter (battle royale on mode-specific vehicles with field upgrades). On top of that, there are themed PvE and PvP events with unique rewards, clan-only Global Map and clan-based Strongholds, and more!
World of Tanks is hard to master but easy to learn and enjoyable from the get-go. As a rookie, learn the basics from the Bootcamp scenarios, face easier opponents in lower-tier battles, and complete the Tank Academy missions for appealing rewards. A seasoned tanker friend can get you into the Referral Program, bagging great benefits for both of you.

After over 20k battles and about 10 years of playing the game, the one word I would use to describe this game is disappointment... let me tell you why... 1) over time the game started introducing more and more OP tanks, mainly premium tanks for real money. but the biggest problem are the tanks I categorize as "c*ncer" class - the tanks with one pixel to no weak spot, ton of armor, and high gun depression - because if you have this tank and at least average IQ you can just easily camp in place while being indestructible because no one can penetrate you. 2) almost all maps are the same. they sure look different but there is no change in how you play, every map has heavy, medium and light flank, you go to where you belong, if not, then you'll probably die very fast, or you'll never get a chance to do anything. on top of that there is bunch of campers in the corner of the map, and sadly many maps reward mindless camping more than actually playing. even worse is that 90% of the maps are dominated by hull-down tanks (witch includes most of the OP and "c*ncer" tanks) 3) RNG - will you miss or hit? will you penetrate or not? will you set enemy on fire? will you blow their ammo? it's like 20-30% skill and 70-80% RNG, you can have the most precise gun with all the equipment and skills to aim even better and yet you might still miss 10 perfectly aimed shots on stationary enemy 50 meters away from you, or you might have the least accurate gun with trash crew and hit a moving enemy on 500 meters and set them on fire, all while you are also moving. 4) match-making is just horrible, vast majority of battles end within 5 minutes with most likely score being 3-15 or 15-3, there is like 1 out of 5 or 10 battles where the teams are more balanced, but most of battles are just one sided demolition of the other team. next problem is +-2 tiers system, where you play with tanks that are significantly better or worse, if you are on top - great, enjoy this battle, it'll not happen in the next 20 battles. if you are at the bottom - good luck being of any real use, also this awaits you every 2nd battle. and no I'm not joking, you are mostly fighting in your tier or you are the bottom one, it's rare to be on top in comparison. 5) bots are everywhere - I already mentioned the campers above, but let me get to more details. it's super common to have some noob/bot in the team who will either rush the enemy alone, get into crossfire and die instantly, or the opposite where several tanks camp near the base the whole game doing nothing. it's not a big problem when these bots are tank destroyers which for most part is a camper class, but when these bots are heavy/medium/light tanks it can very easily screw your game entirely, as you'll get outgunned on important places, then the 5 campers are left alone against 12 tanks and die, which sadly is a common scenario for one team or the other. and no, this is not just on low tier, this happens all the time on tier 10 or even 11 as well. 6) P2W - 10 years ago I wouldn't say this game will become P2W, oh silly me... I already mentioned OP tanks in my first point, but this isn't just about tanks - it's about ammo, there are 3 "classes" and 4 types of shells in the game: the default, the gold and HE for "classes" and AP, APCR, HEAT and HE/HESH for types. the types are mostly based on how shells would work irl and are not a problem, the problem comes from the "classes" where in 95% of situations the gold ammo is the best choice no questions asked - they have higher penetration and in many cases higher shell velocity - so where is the problem? well you have to pay credits for each shot fired, and the gold ammo is often 5-10 times more expansive than default ammo. now this wouldn't be an issue if developers would refrain from adding more and more heavy armored tanks with smaller and smaller weak spots - but they do - leaving you with a choice - will you rely on RNG miracle to deal damage, or will you pay for the gold ammo to significantly increase your chances? and yes, credits are the base currency, but without premium account/tanks or both to increase your income you'll simply see your credits running away as one gold shot normally costs about 4k-6k credits and you make 50k-100k per battle, so 10-20 shots? good luck saving for a new tank my friend.... 7) the economy is disgusting, because guess what not only that the game pushes you to pay for gold ammo, but you also have to pay for the repairs of your tank (which can easily cost 40k+ credits if you die in higher tiers) + you have to pay for consumables, I think you got it by this point, you either pay or suffer from more RNG BS and will have to grind for a long *ss time to get to higher tiers - yo and I almost forgot that the free tanks always start with sh!t modules and you have to research the better ones first to be at least minimally competitive 8) if you are like me who wants at least some realism - I mean real, possibly functioning tanks that don't use all of the stupidity - well, the game has ran out of realism a long time ago, but making tanks that could never work in reality just by how stupidly they look and function is something that I personally don't like at all - this point is just my subjective take on this matter 9) toxic community - and the players being toxic in most cases are the stupidest ones - they rush enemy alone, die, then blame the team. or they camp, let the team die, then complain - slurs in chat every battle is a norm in this game. it's extremely rare to find someone who will cooperate with you to win the battle. the next kinda toxic thing is how you compete with your teammates for damage and kills, it's not common but it's neither rare to see some toxic monkey pushing their teammates to enemy fire so that they can get free shield, or blocking someone from dealing damage. 10) artillery - it's just a class of tanks camping on the spawn shooting across the whole map, not being spotted the whole game - it's ultra braindead and annoying to whoever gets hit by it, as not only that it deals damage to you but it'll stun you on top of it which will lower your mobility, reloading speed and precision, making you easier target. and there's not a single thing you can do to avoid this once they target you. 11) support is absolute dogsh!t - once I reported cheater who clearly had a wall hack with arty, shooting me the entire game despite me not being spotted the whole time (I even got replay from one of the players on enemy team where it was clear on the map that I was not spotted - and no I wasn't camping either as I had a light tank and was constantly on the move, yet the cheater always hit me), what was the answer from the support after 2 days of waiting you ask? "wE ConDucT ScAnnInG AnD bAnNinG oF cHeaTErs iN wAVes aUTomAtiCAly aND wE dOnt enGAge wITh SuCh maTteRS mAnuaLy" or something with that meaning, so if you guessed that they did nothing you were right, congrats! it really disappoints me that one of my favorite games turned into yet another P2W disguised as competitive PVP with developers completely ignoring the community and milking the players as much as they can... and the only reason I still sometimes start the game for a while is mostly some kind of nostalgia, or maybe sunk-cost fallacy too... just don't start this game man, there are better games out there, don't waste your time on this one...

As someone who's been playing this game since 2014, I can confidently say it's dead. It's dead because the six-figure sums pouring into its accounts obscure the obvious problems. These are problems that have existed in the game all this time, problems that could have been solved, problems that were being solved, but something went wrong, perhaps in 2018 or when wheeled vehicles were added (I have no complaints about them; they're well-balanced, and you need to know how to play them). It's not that World of Tanks was ever incredibly diverse, balanced, or fair to the player—there were attempts to fix the situation (now I think the developers didn't fix anything back then; the scale of the accumulated problems simply wasn't that great). And what about the problems? I've spoken to a lot of people who have been playing this game for quite a while (10 years or more). 1. Lack of playability for some vehicle classes on some maps. 1.1 Well, I think you understand, playing a heavy tank in open space when there are three SPGs in the battle feels abnormal, especially when you're trying to show initiative and do something. 1.2 Or the opposite situation – light tanks on urban maps. I don't know how this is supposed to work in theory. The game assumes that light tanks are used as medium tanks, despite the fact that light tanks usually have the weakest firepower. And the question is, what should a tank do on such a map, whose main task is to spot the enemy? If my firepower is only enough to fire into the enemy's rear. 1.3 I won't write much about this situation with SPGs, because anyone who decides to go down this slippery slope is bound to suffer. 2. The huge amount of vegetation on the maps and firing positions. 2.1 The developers, realizing that battles in the game end in 4-5 minutes with a score of 15-0 or 0-15, instead of increasing the health of all tanks by the same percentage or decreasing damage per minute by the same percentage, decided to simply provide numerous firing positions for less active players. Of course, this will force everyone to hide in the bushes; there's no other way. Now it turns out that even the slightest ingenuity is severely punished by health loss and your ass. Adding such firing positions to team spawn points was a big step. Have you ever had a Tier 10 heavy tank just standing in the base, firing from the bushes instead of doing what it's supposed to? And a minute later, you discover there's nothing left of it because the enemy team just happened to have guys with at least some, but not zero, gray matter in their heads? Yes, I'm specifically addressing you, the IS-7 player on Murovanka, who decided to hide in the bushes when he could have been more useful than a damage-absorbing sponge. 3. Community. 3.1 The previous point flows smoothly into this one. You see, perhaps we would have a different game, also not perfect, but still different. But it turns out that the main target audience of this project turns a blind eye to all the problems. I don't know why, but they're happy with everything. They're willing to sacrifice half their salary, and not just their own, to buy a tank. So that later, that tank gets nerfed, and then they'll buy another one. 3.2 It often happens that your team faces guys like that IS-7 I mentioned above, and not just one or two, but usually five to nine. You seem to be doing everything right, effectively eliminating opponents and taking key positions on maps from which to engage and win, while several other players are doing the same. However, this game works differently than others. What do I mean by that? 4. Game Mechanics 4.1 In most online games I've played, you can win even if your allies is outnumbered or even if you're alone. In such cases, accuracy, understanding the gameplay, mechanics, and taking advantage of your weapons and character's strengths are key. In World of Tanks, it's different. It's still crucial to know the map and its features, vehicle characteristics, and understand the core gameplay mechanics (the 15-meter bush distance, the three-caliber rule, and the 50-meter range aren't even included in the basic tutorial, as far as I remember; I learned this from third-party content creators). But this is where shot spread comes into play; you can add +-25% to damage and penetration. That's it. Nothing more. I remember countless battles I could have won, and in some, even earned the Kolobanov Medal, BUT I was just unlucky. The shell missed its target, and it didn't penetrate. That's all. Someone will inevitably say, "You're a bad player," and so on. Maybe you, my little tank enthusiast, are right, but do I need to prove anything to you, or vice versa? I guess i'm just tired of World of Tanks. But it was fun. I still remember those races on Chaffee and the game mode where everyone drove armored Rolls-Royces, T-18s in his best time and even tank soccer. Well, this is the end and perhaps it's for the best. peace to all.
Was one of my absolute favorite games in the early days when the most annoying thing was artillery. It was simple, you felt like you made progress in performance, collecting tanks was fun (including premium tanks), and the community was alive and well. Of course nothing last forever and what was once a great game with some flaws has now become the saddest game I have ever played, it doesn't even have default controls for the Steam Deck. It's a dead game, no need to bring up a long list of why; anyone that played it when it was enjoyable knows exactly what I mean.
Wargaming has turned this game into complete ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. You wait 1-2 Minutes for a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ game that feels like you have zero agency, You either get steamrolled in 5 minutes or you do the same to the enemy team. Really not worth grinding your way up for such a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ PvP experience, if you even want to call it that. That's not even mentioning all the predatory monetization BS. Cannot recommend any longer, used to be a really good and fun game.
Give me back 14 years of my life
DISCLAIMER: I have been playing this game since 2021, i only linked my account to steam this year. - pay to win - most tech tree tanks (free to play & obtain) SUCK to grind until you reach tier 9 - gold is unbelivably hard to obtain F2P - horrendously P2W battlepass that requires gold to unlock "improved pass" - bad map design that promotes stale gameplay and punishes proactive movement - bad playerbase that plays into that issue - artillery is unskilled, unfair, and truthfully can be removed without any detriment to the game - playing lower tiers is genuinely the only way to enjoy the game anymore in any capacity - horrendous lootboxes that cost way too much and give trash rewards Feedback: Give players more ways to earn gold & train their tank crews fast, buff all the tech tree tanks until they are up to speed with most premiums, and fix map design by promoting flanking and careful movements. Raise skill floor by removing artillery and the armour penetration indicator feature of showing effective armour (including armour flashlight). Rework gun accuracy system to be dependent on the duration you aim for instead of "leave it up to RNGeezus" so its actually skillful.
i remember how this game was in 2014, its astonishing how terrible it is now lol.
Every time I reinstall this game I'm reminded that I'm not the target audience. The target audience is the pay-to-win players with expensive premium ammunition and camo that are going to snipe me from across the map undetected. World of Warships at least has the decency to have a co-op mode for people that don't like getting curb stomped by people that play 40 hours a week. That's not even including the abusive messages I receive from random players that are completely unreportable ingame.
