Wasteland 2: Director's Cut

That old vault 44 feeling

A great followup to one of my favourite RPGs of the 20th century. Sure it's rough and full of bugs and inconsistencies, but what it brings is amazing if you are a) old like me b) love post-apocalyptic settings c) are looking for an RPG where your choices matter and even the stupidest side-quest can be completed in at least two ways and it will all come together when you finish the game. In short: great game for old farts like me, who can't really stand knights and wizards anymore.

If you like apocalyptic isometric RPGs with turn-based combat, enriched with a nice portion of black humour, Wasteland 2 clearly is a recommendation for you. But keep in mind this is an old game with many references to an even older time, where bits were transported on floppy disks. I just completed the game for the first time (my first attempt some years ago was interrupted at 80% by a vacation and then I didn't continue) and found out that the game managed to really draw me into the story. In the end, I even cared about the individuals I met during my journey - and I appreciated to meet them again, even after their quests were long over and almost forgotten. Personally, I don't care about the aged graphics, but it might turn off some people looking for eye-candy. Combat is quite basic, far from being a simulation. But at least there is LoS, cover implementation (only yes/no), friendly fire and also reaction fire. Oh, and there are real action points and not that modern rubbish 2-phase movement system for tbc-dummies. But that's just my opinion. ;-) If combat gets boring (towards the end), you can make use of the game mechanic to avoid random encounters. Sometimes quest scripting gets confused if you act in a sequence that wasn't intended. However, this didn't mess up anything seriously. So, go and buy this jewel of a game - esp. if it's on sale... ;-)

Really well done job staying true to the original while modernizing the game as well. If you played the original you will love it. If you are new to the series I think you will enjoy it as well.

By far the worst game I have ever played if you want a good game play X-com.

I'm playing co-op Wasteland 3 with a friend and enjoying it, so I decided to buy Wasteland 2 for my solo play. Graphics are ugly even by 2014 standards, but not a big deal. The story continues from Wasteland 1, it seems. Whatever. We're a rookie team on a mission. Good, let's go! I created my own squad. I thought I did an okay job, apparently not. I tried to distribute attributes for personality. Like, I tried to create a dumb, strong heavy guy named Big Russian. I don't know how a Russian guy could be in the American desert, but whatever, it's corny. HMG is useless. I'm out of ammo at AG Center, and I don't know what to do with him. Low intelligence is hurting my skill points, and extra strength and coordination aren't that helpful. I created a science-leader girl with handguns. Thought she'd be alright in the early game with a low-damage but low AP-cost pistol. Nope, her bullets were like mosquito bites. And later, you can recruit a companion with exactly her skills. Well, that sucks. I don't remember the need to min-max your builds in Wasteland 3, and ammo wasn't a problem. Assault rifles are OP here. There are many time-wasting mechanics, like skill checks. Every box is trapped, and it takes too much time to check it, disarm it, pick the lock, and loot it. Combat is generic and repetitive, there are no special abilities or clever tactics. At least in the early game. Wasteland 2 is wasting my time. It's a 6/10 or 7/10. It's not a bad game, but there are so many great games to play. Why would you spend your precious time on mediocrity? And I got two versions of the game, both banners in Steam say Director's Cut. One is 18 GB, the other 14 GB. And the 14 GB one is the DC version. I ended up installing both of them by mistake. Not a great first impression.
