Ignore the Early access banner. At no point does this game feel early access. In this puzzle game, start with a bare basic NAND gate, and go through levels building yourself up to a Turing Complete computer and beyond. You start designing the other logic gates, then stuff like decoders, which the levels unlocking the building blocks you design as placeable parts. (Decoders, logic gates, adders, etc) to further build onto into more advanced building blocks. Eventually you will start a project built in multiple stages that ends in a simple 8bit Turing Complete computer using all the building blocks you designed. After doing some challenges writing programs for that computer, you will then make some upgrades before facing the final suite of challenges the current game has to offer. You have a sandbox mode as well where you can basically design whatever you want. While the levels themselves split the challenge into bite sized chunks (at least for the circuit design itself), hints are rare, and you will regularly rack your brain over the coals. That being said, if you are the type of person to get excited enough over logic circuits to be willing to spend $20 for a game about them, then you are most likely the exact type of person who should be able to push through the more challenging levels. A lot of later levels basically require a pen and paper handy for initial planning, especially the programming challenges, taking the computer you designed from scratch and actually making it do useful things. I highly recommend the game for the price as-is, and that is assuming the worst case of that 1.0 update never coming out. It is already well worth it and fantastic.

Super cool and challenging way to learn computing from the lowest possible level. I'm not very far into the game as I write this (about 20% of the way through all of the puzzles in the campaign at the time of writing), but I feel like this game is already changing the way I think about computers. Prior to this game, the lowest level of computing I had experience with was assembly language (I can't wait to get to the assembly portion of this game). Prior to this, I knew of logic gates and truth tables as an abstraction, but this game is rewiring my brain to think about it all in a more architecturally modular way.

This game is super cool. Actually, it's rather a 'build your own computer from scratch' simulator. And not only build, but organically figure out how to program this computer, and what, basically, is a program. You clearly will be able to see how complexity of systems bursts, making your progress through campaign. Understanding of how simple logic elements turns into a computer is mind blowing. Highly recommended!

I think this game should be the practical part of computer architecture in every computer science curriculum. Back then, we had to do the stuff on paper, but it was like putting a spotlight here or there without the continuous approach that Turing Complete provides. If you're teaching Computer Science: take this as your baseline. The game itself of course can't teach you the full picture – it's not a professional computer architecture training course, and I think it doesn't want to be (and doesn't have to be). But it can give you a deeper understanding, the practical experience and the playground if you already know the theoretical cornerstones or have a course or training in parallel (or you're good at self-teaching and doing the detail research on your own). I've played the "classic" version like a year ago and the "save_breaker" this week and finished right with the announcement that the new version will be released officially. Consider that review covering already the version to be released tomorrow ;) The game (currently) covers basic 8- and 32-bit architecture, starting from scratch with the NAND gate and sends you forward step by step. I would appreciate the addtions of FPU instructions in future versions, currently there's just working with integers types in the game. The difficulty of the levels is quite varying, there are some more challenging levels in-between; don't be frustrated if there's a hard nut to crack once in a while, with a bit trying and doing some research you should eventually be able to beat it. More difficult levels (specifically multiplication and division with modulo) are optional, but they feel extremely rewarding if you finally cracked it. (Hint: remember how they tought it in primary school with pen and paper) The "classic" version had some annoying bugs when designing a more complex architecture, which was also required in the endgame levels. In the "save_breaker" (i.e., the version 2.1) none of such occured (up to now at least, which means finishing all the levels). Over the course of the latest playthrough, I met one minor bug (division/modulo cost resetting back to a non-optimzed value), one crash (don't know what I did, it just closed itself, but important: no data loss, not even a single wire, everything is saved instantly!), and one level setup issue that made me scratch my head (a short search in the Discord server gave me a hint then how to "fix" it) – for a whole playthrough that's pretty stable. (I wanted at this point to recommend for everyone to play the save_breaker beta, but the release announcement makes that unnecessary :D) All in all, I can recommend this game to everyone with some basic knowledge who wants to play around with computer architecture; if you're coming from high-level programming languages and want to dive into the binary sea, you really might want to play this. As said in the beginning, it makes the gray theory very colorful. At all, I'm extremely grateful that there's somebody out there to create and maintain such a niche game – thank you for making this <3 Unfortunately, I don't remember anymore how I found this game, but I think I randomly stumbled upon it and the reviews clearly told me: buy it. PS: I somehow missed the story™ in save_breaker and the regular threats to be munched if I don't perform :D
