10/10 Do yourself a favor, go in blind. Don't look up answers. Everything about this game is the highest of quality and artistic expression.
I loved the design of this game. I loved the exploration. I loved learning for myself how to play the game. I loved finding the secrets. And I loved that there are secrets within secrets. This game repeatedly had me feeling like I learned something new, making me want to race back to earlier areas to solve puzzles I overlooked. I never felt like retracing my steps through the world was a waste of time, and I found myself doing that a lot! Tunic tells you practically nothing about how to play, letting you figure out the mechanics as you go. In-game manual pages reminiscent of physical game manuals from 20 years ago are hidden throughout the world as collectibles. However, since these manuals are written in an invented language, deciphering them is like solving another puzzle! These pages hint at how to play the game, helping you to discover some more of the mechanics at the appropriate time. The manual also contains and points to many secrets. The map holds hidden secrets aplenty. This game has two layers of puzzles: the obvious puzzle that you need to solve to progress, and the hidden puzzles in which the world itself is a puzzle. As for world design, I was amazed at how well the developers integrated hidden pathways into the map. They are perfectly concealed when viewed from the start of an area, but after finishing exploring, they have an obvious opening from the opposite side to create a shortcut back to where the area began. Combat in this game is pretty bland. All enemies except bosses require you to simply hit them until they die, dodging or using your shield as appropriate. You can use consumable bombs or magic items to switch it up, but the combat never feels fluid or rewarding. Boss fights are far more difficult. No other combat prepares players for the boss fights. I rarely died anywhere else, but I died repeatedly on every boss. It’s as if you’re lulled into a false sense of superiority against the basic enemies only to discover you are nothing against the bosses. It wasn't until I got to the final boss that I discovered settings to reduce combat difficulty. You can make yourself invulnerable, give yourself more stamina, and/or make enemy hits hurt less. I enabled the last option on the final boss. This game would be a perfect 10/10 for me if not for the combat.

I recommend it for some of the experiences it will give you, but the third act really soured me on it overall. In the first 2/3s this is a truly excellent Zelda game. After that, you don't get to play Zelda anymore. You have to choose whether you want to play Dark Souls or The Witness. If you choose The Witness, there's no more combat for you to enjoy. All of the quantitative progression you've built throughout the game is now meaningless. If you choose Dark Souls, well the boss is right there. Win the fight and the game is over. Both sides of the ending are still pretty well done, but this rug pull just really didn't work for me. Pretty disappointing to see an otherwise great game abandon any attempt to continue balancing the styles of gameplay. Still, recommended for the first 9 hours.
A gem of a game. The game design is really unique. The 'aha' moments are really satisfying and they progress the game in a wonderful way. This game is hard, and I unashamedly used the no fail mode, understanding this is not the intended way to play. Regardless, I still enjoyed the game from start to finish, and this accessibility option was probably the difference between finishing the game and putting it down. Good experience on steam deck. Not locked 60, but stays there most of the time. Highly recommend.
I'm going to take my responsibility for not reading the negative reviews before purchasing. This was so highly rated in so many places, I guess I just didnt think to read them. If I had read the negative reviews two things would have stood out for me. 1. The number of players who finished the game (or many hours of gameplay) despite not recommending it. 2. The references to Soulslike. 3. I wouldn't have thought it mattered, but the references to the gaming be cryptic. I can't stand games that you repeat the same thing over and over, unless there is a reasonable save mechanic close by. Add the combat being overly repetitive and tough, it pushed me into frustration rather than fun. The final straw was everything is cryptic in the pages of the manual you find. There's no real map and no waypoints, which equals more time wasted and frustration. If you have the patience for Soulslikes, please ignore my comments, but for those of us who don't enjoy frustrating games, don't bother.
This game is a Zelda-like with admirable exploration and satisfying combat. However, there is more to this game than meets the eye. I came into this game as a palate cleanse as I played Fallout: New Vegas prior. This became more than a palate cleanse and transformed into a truly memorable title. This is a game that is absolutely essential to avoid all spoilers for as there are many pleasant gameplay surprises.
