This game blends strategy with defense mechanics. You begin on a map mostly covered in water, dotted with small islands made up of tiles or hexagons. Each tile can feature different biomes like forests, rocks, volcanoes, or just open water. The tiles next to your starting base or territory can be purchased and reshaped into a basic plain tile, though doing so wipes out any special perks and resets their health. That trade-off can matter. For example, a volcano tile naturally has much higher health and even offers a small damage bonus, so flattening it might not always be the smartest move. Each tile serves a clear purpose: it holds one structure. You can choose between income-generating buildings like farms or taverns, support structures that boost things like morale or storage capacity, or defensive options such as ballistas and mage towers. What I like is that you are not restricted to land. You can build on water too, and in fact, you have to if you want to expand toward more valuable areas, like larger islands that produce extra income. Money drives everything. You use it to buy tiles, construct buildings, and upgrade them. Upgrades are tied to your main base level, so pushing that forward first usually makes the most sense. Once you have spent your resources and set up your defenses, you trigger the next wave of enemies. Ships will attack your tiles, and if a tile loses all its health, it sinks along with whatever was built on it. Survive the wave, and you earn more money to strengthen your setup or expand further. There is a short preparation window between waves where you can reorganize, though you can also jump into the next wave early if you feel confident. Tiles slowly regenerate during this downtime, and interestingly, you can still upgrade things even while under attack. One small twist is that you get to choose the type of enemy for the next wave, but in practice, they feel quite similar. The main difference comes down to their star rating, which reflects difficulty. The more exciting reward for surviving is the perk system. It follows a roguelite style where you pick one option out of three random perks. Higher star perks are more powerful, and they can significantly change how your defenses perform. Some are tied to specific towers, like chaining spells for mage towers or adding piercing damage to arrow towers, while others are more general, such as ignoring enemy defense or increasing the chance of treasure drops. Speaking of treasure, enemies sometimes drop it when destroyed, and clicking it gives you a small boost of coins. There is no real campaign here, just standard runs or a survival mode. Both let you adjust things like terrain, map size, and number of waves. The key difference is that survival mode sends enemies continuously instead of in waves, which can get overwhelming very quickly. Either way, the goal is simple: last as long as possible. Regular waves are broken up by tougher encounters, with elite enemies every fifth round and bosses every tenth. If your defenses are not ready, these can wipe you out in seconds. There is also some meta-progression. The longer you last, the more gems you earn. You can also generate gems through an academy building, though that requires sacrificing a tile, which is not always worth it. Gems are used to unlock new characters, each with their own unique traits. For example, the merchant can absorb damage by spending gold, while the ranger transforms tiles into forests instead of plain land. Unlocking characters takes a fair amount of grinding, either through repeated runs or getting lucky with perk rewards that occasionally include gems. On top of that, you can spend gems to upgrade each character. Every character has three perks that must be unlocked in order, and they take effect immediately. Some are straightforward but useful, like increasing tile health or granting a free tile at the start. Overall, the game is enjoyable in short bursts, but it does have its rough edges. Survival mode in particular can feel unbalanced, with strong enemy ships appearing very early and ending your run before you have a chance to build up. The gem grind can also drag a bit. If you are just trying to farm resources, it can actually be quicker to start a run and let yourself lose rather than push for a longer, more demanding session, since the rewards do not scale all that generously.
Treasure’s Mine! developed and published by FatFishGame is a compact but thoughtfully designed strategy experience that blends tower defense fundamentals with roguelite progression in a way that feels immediately approachable yet gradually more demanding. The premise is straightforward: you oversee a small island domain built on a hexagonal grid, defending your growing stash of treasure from persistent pirate assaults. What gives the game its identity is not the premise itself, but how its systems interlock—each run becoming a balance between expansion, survival, and long-term investment. The hex-based map design plays a central role in shaping the gameplay. Instead of the rigid orthogonal layouts seen in many tower defense games, the hex grid encourages more fluid spatial planning. Coverage patterns behave differently, forcing players to reconsider how they position towers and manage choke points. This seemingly subtle shift has a meaningful impact over time, especially as procedurally generated island layouts ensure that no two runs unfold exactly the same way. Adapting to terrain limitations, resource placement, and enemy approach paths becomes the heart of the experience, and the game succeeds in making each decision feel relevant even in its early stages. Progression is handled through a roguelite loop that gives consistent purpose to each attempt. Even when a run ends in failure, the resources you collect carry over, feeding into upgrades that strengthen future starts. This structure is familiar, but Treasure’s Mine! executes it with restraint, avoiding unnecessary complexity while still giving players a sense of steady advancement. Unlocks tend to feel meaningful rather than incremental, and the gradual expansion of your toolkit reinforces the idea that mastery is built over time rather than achieved in a single successful run. One of the more engaging systems is the way towers can be improved and combined. Rather than simply stacking upgrades linearly, the game encourages experimentation with different configurations, pushing players to think about efficiency and synergy. Space is limited, especially in the early stages, so every tile matters. Choosing whether to expand your territory, invest in stronger defenses, or refine your existing setup creates a constant tension that keeps the gameplay loop engaging. It’s this layer of decision-making that elevates the experience beyond a simple defensive exercise and into something more strategic. Visually, the game leans toward clarity over spectacle. Its 2.5D presentation is clean and readable, ensuring that essential information like tower ranges, enemy paths, and terrain features are easy to understand at a glance. While it doesn’t aim to impress with elaborate effects or highly detailed environments, it succeeds in supporting the gameplay without distraction. The pirate theme adds a touch of personality, even if it remains somewhat conventional, providing enough context to make the action feel cohesive rather than abstract. That said, the game does show some of the growing pains typical of smaller indie projects. Over longer sessions, the variety in enemy types and strategic scenarios can begin to feel limited, and experienced players may find themselves settling into optimal patterns sooner than expected. The core mechanics are strong, but they would benefit from additional layers of complexity or content to sustain long-term engagement. Likewise, while functional, the presentation lacks the distinct visual or audio flair that might help it stand out more prominently within the crowded strategy genre. Even with these limitations, Treasure’s Mine! remains an enjoyable and well-structured experience that understands its strengths. It delivers a satisfying loop of planning, defending, and improving, all wrapped in a format that encourages repeated play without overwhelming the player. Its accessibility makes it easy to jump into, while its underlying systems provide enough depth to reward thoughtful decision-making. With further updates or expanded content, it has the potential to grow into something even more compelling. Rating: 8/10
