Gameplay: Scavenge for scraps and craft makeshift weapons to defend yourself against the many horrors. Unearth fragments of forgotten lives scattered across the island and piece together the chilling mystery of Fort Oasis’s fate. Better than Hunt: Showdown
I am enjoying this game, with a couple of really big caveats. I'm continuing to play through it, but agonizing over whether to recommend it or not. This is an extremely polished game with a fascinating story that suffers fundamental setbacks stemming from what seems to be internal conflicts within its core vision. Pros: + Graphics--lighting, atmosphere, design, execution--are absolutely stellar + Sound design is top-notch + Story is engaging; want to know what happens next + Level design is very compelling Cons: - Inventory & Gear system: 1. Breakable weapons and an obtuse crafting system encourage player to hoard everything. 2. Extremely limited inventory plus lots of items to gather means having to choose between, a. disposing of massive amounts of possibly-necessary gear (see: above), or b. being over-encumbered literally all the time. I have personally spent about 75% of my time in this game over-encumbered. It is a constant bother. 3. "Garbage Disposal" system helps a bit, but doesn't carry over items between chapters. This unholy trinity of issues stems from what I perceive to be an internal conflict between: A. The desire to make a game reminiscent of classic survival horror (e.g. Resident Evil) with harsh inventory limitations that require the player to make hard decisions about what to bring with, and, B. The desire to make a game that feels like a boomer shooter. Quick movement, exploration, secrets, collectibles, and high-octane combat. Instead of blending these game styles fluidly, the inventory system simply suffers. I cannot count the number of times I've stared at my packed inventory in a state of abject frustration trying to decide what to ditch and what to keep, just to get my weight down enough to be able to sprint...at least, until I find the next item that weighs a little too much. Honestly, though very polished and fluid for what it is (like the rest of the game), this system is a turd. - Checkpoint/Save System: I would call this a major flaw that feels at-odds with the level design ethos. There are long, slow-paced sections that lead into life-or-death situations with no checkpoint in-between. Player caught off-guard, killed, must do the whole slow-paced section again. Slow-paced sections are wonderful *the first time*, and then quickly become excruciating and boring thereafter. This was especially egregious in Chapter 4.

One of the best survival-horror games I have ever had the experience of playing. Cannot recommend it enough. Highlights:

Highly encouraged for fans of Condemned: Criminal Origins
Overwhelmingly gritty and oppressive atmosphere
Weighty combat with a large smattering of weapons to use. Firearms included.
Thoughtful level design with secrets and something new to offer in each chapter.
Deep pool of enemies and bosses to encounter.. or avoid.
A rather deep crafting/inventory management system
And to top it off, you get to manage your Sanity, Health, Stamina and Hunger
An actually scary and tense game. Some moments will make you feel like a masochist, but I admittedly loved every second.
Janky, but not in a way I found charming. Enemies hitting you through corners. A map that feels a bit thrown together and random, making it very challenging and unfun to navigate. Systems that feel a little undercooked. The difficulty settings feel a bit under tested, with players reporting the standard difficulty to be too easy, and the higher difficulty to be so punishing when you lose 40 minutes of progress in a way that feels unfun (yeah, I'm maulding, what of it?). The story feels a little juvenile. Disappointed, as I really wanted to like it. It has a bit of atmosphere to it. There is some charm here. But too many deaths that just felt a bit... meh, and it's broken me, I don't want to go back in.
AMAZING!! BUY if you like games like Amnesia the Dark Descent, Condemned Criminal Origins and Silent Hill 2!!!
