About
Tornado: Research and Rescue is a storm-chasing game set during the golden age of 1990s tornado research. Read the forecast, track violent storms across Tornado Alley, deploy scientific probes and warn communities before it is too late.
Every chase is different. Forecasts, road networks, towns, tornadoes and destruction are procedurally generated, forcing you to make decisions with limited time and incomplete information. Choose your route, position your equipment and decide how close you are willing to get as the storm evolves around you.
Use Doppler radar and visual clues to locate developing tornadoes, then navigate rural roads to intercept them.
Tornadoes can change direction, grow rapidly and become wrapped in heavy precipitation. What begins as a distant funnel can become a violent, debris-filled wedge cutting off your escape route. Getting close produces better research opportunities - but one wrong turn can place you directly in the path!
Place portable probes ahead of the tornado and attempt to capture measurements from inside the circulation.
Collect data including:
Wind speed
Pressure
Temperature
Dew point
Stronger tornadoes can produce more valuable readings, but reaching their path and escaping safely becomes increasingly difficult. A perfectly positioned probe could fund your next set of upgrades.
Research is only part of the job.
When a tornado threatens a community, issue warnings and give residents time to reach shelter. Your decisions have consequences. A successful chase is not measured only by the data you collect, but by how many people survive the storm.
Experimental atmospheric chemicals allow you to influence a tornado's behaviour.
Release different chemical types to alter properties such as intensity, width and movement. Each tornado responds differently, so every experiment requires observation, repeated sampling and a willingness to take risks.
You may weaken a dangerous storm - or accidentally create something far worse: tornadoes beyond an F5 rating are possible in this game!
Sell research data and earn rewards from successful rescues to prepare for increasingly dangerous chases.
Improve your:
Storm-chasing vehicle
Doppler radar
Research probe
Better equipment allows you to detect storms earlier, collect more valuable data and survive conditions that would have ended previous chases.
Begin with limited equipment and work your way towards the most extreme tornadoes the atmosphere can produce.
Each forecast presents a new combination of risk and opportunity. A quiet-looking day may struggle to produce a tornado, while an exceptional environment could create a violent outbreak capable of overwhelming entire communities.
Spend your earnings carefully, improve your research capabilities and decide whether the next chase is worth the danger.
Alongside the career experience, Sandbox mode allows you to configure custom storm-chasing scenarios.
Experiment with different environments, tornadoes and equipment without putting your career progression at risk, or create the most destructive storm you can survive.
You can also recreate historic tornadoes and experience them yourself in-game: the Bridge Creek/Moore 1999 tornado and the Jarrell 1997 tornadoes are included.
Forecast the storm. Deploy the probe. Warn the towns. Survive the chase.

So I've had this game for a few years now and I was there for the original build and thoroughly enjoyed it. I thought it was fun with the layout of the map being varied with the towns, the terrain, the hills, etc. You could call warnings if you weren't near a town to warn them. You could max out your stats and just drive into the tornado without ever getting lifted. It was unrealistic sure, but it was fun. You could be the tornado magnet where horrifyingly huge wedge tornadoes would chase you. You could survive an outbreak of tornado after tornado after tornado. Certain things weren't perfect, if you got thrown by a tornado, it would genuinely throw you off the map and there was no way to spawn back on land meaning you had to quit back to the game menu. It was a pain but it was fun back then......but I think a step back was taken cause at the previous build. After the developer released an update, you couldn't max your stats anymore. In fact you had to sacrifice which attributes you wanted to focus on which caused an imbalance of any skills or upgrades were available. It was kinda disheartening at the time but then, the developer said he was going to rework the game. And that he did, the tornadoes were varied in size, shape, speed, intensity and we had multi-vortex tornadoes. You could upgrade again with cash based on your level of data you collected each chase. And with your level of profession which was based off of how many lives you could save based on the warnings you gave. Tornadoes can randomly chase you if you have hunts enabled with a horrifyingly ominous "IT IS COMING FOR YOU" text that pops up on the screen. The tornado during the those hunts would get faster to reach you. Now with all of that in mind, let me express my dislikes with this new build. If you spawn onto a map, it sometimes throws you in the middle of a field for no reason and because the driving is so slow, it takes ages to get back onto a road thus wasting time to get to the tornado. While the map generates something new each chase, the road network is incredibly inconsistent. With how big the map is, I felt like the developer thought making the roads more windy and curved would make it more exciting but in actuality it hinders the player whilst driving because thebroad network is never cohesive and you have to keep looking at the map because you might miss your turn and then it's a nightmare to find a consistent path to the tornado. It's never from point A to B, you have to hope that it generates a road network that makes sense. The slightest bumps can make you lose hundreds of dollars for no good reasons and it's not like I'm driving distracted, if you drive on the slopes of an off-road trail and just bump on the incline or decline of it, you can lose your money or your samples. I can understand if the tornado throws you or if you drive like a maniac into the fence or such but that's ridiculous. I find leveling up your rankings is hard because for some incredibly cruel reason, the tornadoes love to spawn over the mobile homes which causes you to lose your rescue score from how many residents are injured or killed. And no you can't radio to a town to warn them so why should I get penalized over something so mundane as that? The hunts are fun when you get them but it feels like you don't get them 90% of the time, which makes it feel like what's the point of even having the hunts enabled for a 10% chance when I could just leave it disabled and chase normally cause practically it's the same thing. For how big the map is, it's incredibly frustrating how quickly the tornadoes go off the map. I've seen comments on Discord of people whining where is TIV or the Dominator, but for me the bigger concern is, where is a varied selections of vehicles? You only get the one vehicle and that's it. It would be exciting to include other vehicles/homages that don't infringe on copyright. I know it's only one guy working on it and I respect his hustle. In fact I like the new scenario mode, which recreates tornadoes in history like Jarrell or Bridge Creek and recreates the events in a timeline as you chase them and warn residents. It's a brilliant idea that I feel other storm chasing games should have done before. But at this time it's just too many flaws that hinder it at this time.

Started out as one of the least realistic tornado games on Steam, and is now quickly shaping up to become one of the most realistic.
Its Windy Out Here
Game is good fun for storm chasing enthusiasts. Its not super realistic in terms of the radar systems and not based on real weather data. But for those who want high intensity chases consistently this game does that very well.
Putting the "Rescue" in Research and Rescue
Something that sets this game apart from the other games is the fact that you are directly in charge of saving lives. You are the one who needs to set off the sirens and warn residents of incoming tornados! Save as many as you can! For all the lives you save, you gain ranks which allows you to unlock upgrades to your car, your probes, and your radar! Save as many as you can!
Scenarios & Custom Scenarios
You can also play unique REAL scenarios that happened in real life made by the developer (like the Jarrel Texas tornado AKA the "Dead Man Walking" tornado), or create scenarios yourself and take reference images of real tornados that occurred, place those images in the scenario editor, and MAKE those real tornado scenarios yourself and chase them! El Reno 2013? You can make it! Or even just make some made up scenarios to chase too! Its all up to you!
Chaser... Chased
There is a game setting you can turn on or off that allows the tornado to enter a "Hunt" state. This makes a growl sound play with a red flashing text saying "!! IT IS COMING FOR YOU !!" This causes the tornado to b-line it STRAIGHT for your position! While also dramatically increasing the speed of the tornado! This forces you to have an escape plan prepared at all times and adds a great deal of extra challenge to the game. Forcing you to position yourself in a safe place that you can escape the tornado from in the event it decides to throw down with you. But it might also provide the perfect intercept opportunities as well! Not a lot of other tornado chasing games have this feature. Making it stand out from the others in a nice way!
Beautiful, Varied Tornados and Shapes
The tornados in this game are definitely the highlight. They look very good! With varied shapes, subvorticies being present (whether vertical to the ground or horizontal stands poking out of the funnel), and differing sizes of the ground rotation in tandem with the funnel size. The tornados also have rather realistic windfields which are areas around the funnel that wind motion and suction actually begin taking place much farther out than the actual visable condensation funnel! You can even see the tail cloud into the wall cloud!
Break the Physics of Tornados
The game comes with an interesting gameplay mechanic to allow you to customize a "chemical" release system into your probes. Intercepting tornados with said probes allows you to increase/decrease certain aspects of the tornado how you want! Want to make the tornado a higher or lower Fujita Rating by increasing or decreasing intensity? You can! Want to make the tornado wider or smaller? You can! Want to speed up its ground speed or slow it down? You can! Want the Tornado to deviate its motion more or less? You can do that too! All in all, a great game to have in your library for any storm chasing enthusiasts who want more intense and chaotic chasing experiences!
Really fun game!! Although, maybe add some invisible borders or a big tornado you cant escape when your outside the map.
The tornados look great but that's really it, there's zero guidance on what you should be doing and the menus are clunky af, I started with career mode and just got dropped into a map with no idea what to do besides the obvious, intercept. How is this a career mode with no objective? Just keep intercepting and driving into towns (by towns I mean trailer parks). Maybe I missed something but after an hour an a half of playing I just felt like i'd seen it all, been sucked into a tornado a couple of times which was funny, saved people in the "towns", Intercepted the same tornado multiple times as it just continued to get larger and bought some upgrades but now what? Having looked at "OUTBRK" also, there are pro's and cons to both, if they merged together it would be a brilliant game. Sadly however the downsides to OUTBRK sound pretty poor as well, especially for the price point.
Cool tornado chasing game that feels like twister and twisters combined. Has a lot of very unique features, and the fact its still in alpha makes me wonder what more is to come!
Better than OUTBRK! This game has the most content out of every tornado game on steam while also getting updates every 3 days! it feels like the dev made this game out of love for the topic! Though I do have to say that it needs a Co-Op mode. The tornadoes look amazing unlike OUTBRK, while also giving the player many custom maps and modes to play with. I got this today and I already plan on playing this for a while. Do recommend for weather fans!
Very good game, i like it, the storm chasing its accurated and the drive feeling its awesome but i think this game needs some love, the developers must add an online mode, more cars for the user and missions to do... and maybe some new maps not only storms
For a 90's throwback with a certain movie thrown into it, it's a pretty interesting game all around. It's still in EA and has bugs and all but that as expected. Granted there are things i would of done differently, added and or changed in certain areas but, for what it is though in this early stage, it's pretty fun. I am kind of curious how this ends up later down the road. All in all, it's worth buying.
Day 1: Scared... Nervous to get to close. Day 2: Figured out that EAS warning wears off and need to be reminded of the F4 a mile away. Many died... Day 3-5: F1-2, figured I should learn how to read the forecasts. Day 6: Biggest one yet, managed to get a F5 with 0.8 radius and ground speed of only 10mph, managed to save the towns and put my probe in some of the best spots. 100-300 samples for all categories. Sooooooooo excited at the end of the tornado that I forgot the analyze the data... My greatest research.. My best rescue yet! Gone... Like the houses blown away by the tornado.. All that for nothing, because I forgot to click a button.
