A genealogical mystery straight out of 1998. Scour the early Internet for clues, uncover hidden connections, and piece together the family tree behind the secretive Roottree Corporation.
Modeled estimate, not a reported figure. How we estimate →
Prices
Each in the currency that store quoted — not converted: the gap between two rows is the publisher's pricing, not an exchange rate.
Every market we collect.
Charts
Each storefront's own chart, in its own country — the closest public signal to sales where none is published. A country missing from a list is one we don't collect there, not one where the game doesn't chart.
No United States chart position — it charts only in the markets below.
Discounts
Every price cut of more than 20% we have observed, in each market that quoted one, with this game's chart position on either side of it. These are episodes, not a model: a sale is one event, and one event cannot tell you what the next one will do.
Reviews, worldwide (the counter carries no country): 8.14/day in the week to Aug 19 → 24.57/day in the week after.
Too few observations to say whether a discount moves this store's chart at all: across the last 30 days Steam · Top Sellers · Poland has just 18 day-to-day chart moves that followed a price cut, against 2,498 that did not. We are publishing the count instead of a direction — 20 is the fewest we will draw a conclusion from, and price collection outside the United States began on 6 August 2026.
Prices outside the United States have been collected since 6 August 2026 and chart positions since 19 July 2026, so a cut older than that has no market to compare and a market that joined later has no history yet. Nothing here is converted between currencies.
About
The year is 1998. A private jet belonging to the Roottree Corporation has crashed. On it were the Roottree Sisters and their parents. Combined, they were worth over a billion dollars.
Now, due to the eccentricities of their great-great-grandfather Elias, their money must be redistributed to the rest of the family. But who's actually a BLOOD RELATIVE? That's where you come in.
Armed only with the power of your mighty dial-up modem, you'll scour for photos, books, articles and other evidence. Then, you'll make connections and deductions based on the family relationships you uncover. With every spot on the tree you fill in correctly, the names and photos left in your possession will have fewer and fewer places to go — but the evidence will also be harder and more obscure to find.
Can you put together the final pieces of the puzzle?
The Acclaimed Armchair Detective Game, Re-imagined on Steam
The Roottrees are Dead was originally created for the Global Game Jam 2023 and released as a free browser game. It was beloved by many for its clever puzzles, retro computing interface and novel world-building. The Steam version is the same great game, but enhanced in many ways:

A 3D living-room perspective that ties together all the unique puzzle systems
An enhanced user interface with many quality of life improvements to make your mystery solving easier to use and more intuitive
Remastered music and sound effects, with fully voiced cinematics.
A handful of Easter eggs and little touches for those who can't get enough of the late ‘90s charm
Includes "Roottreemania", a brand new mystery
Find out what happens to the Roottree family following the events of the base game.
A whole new family tree to complete!
Discover the scandals, lies, and infidelities that took place behind the scenes of America's largest maple candy empire.
Add-ons
Each DLC is estimated with the same model as a game, then summed — a modeled figure, not reported DLC sales.

总体还不错,就是能搜索的只有三个地方有点单一了。玩法能多样化更好
This game is addictive! the details were laid down well and I personally enjoyed doing the detective work.
I already played the game all the way through in itch.io before it was out on steam, and spent weeks completing it. when I finally got it on steam, I spent even more wonderful hours completing it again. and then, to my delight, there was a new game mode. I then proceeded to complete Roottreemania, replay the main gamemode again, then replay Roottreemania. I have spent an ungodly amount of time on this game in total (counting my first play through on itch.io) and I don't regret any second of it. If there's 100 fans of The Roottrees are Dead, I'm one of them, if there's only one fan of The Roottrees are Dead, it'll be me, if there's zero fans of The Roottrees are Dead, then I must be dead too. however the saying goes. I LOVE THIS GAME PLEASE GIVE ME MORE RAGHHHHH. Great game, devs. :)

So good! Give me 20!!! Now!!! Jokes aside, the gameplay is simple yet not simple enough that you find it boring. The game difficulty is perfect in my opinion: you get the feel of being a real detective with all the deduction but if it ever becomes too much (which only happens in the later stages of the game, if so) you can always have some clues! 10/10 would recommend
Years ago, a friend mentioned in passing the time we bumped into someone I knew in town and hung out with when she went to buy a dildo, before heading back to mine to chill. I had zero recollection of this happening, and spent all day asking myself questions like "who do I know who would invite me dildo shopping?" and "who did I ever like enough to let them open their new dildo in my living room?". My friend's memory was patchy too, but she was insistent that this had happened and so I spent the next few hours unable to think of anything else, bombarding her with questions about this mystery dildo-lover. After a while she made a throwaway remark, she gave a heartfelt "bless her" and I felt my face go 😲 😲 😲 as I remembered the sweetest girl I've ever known who was absolutely deserving of a genuine "bless her", and it all fell into place. I'd seen the Time Knife and suddenly everything made sense, I became pure knowledge in that moment and light bent around the sheer density of my accomplishment. That's the feeling The Roottrees Are Dead successfully replicates. Buy it if you want to feel like the smartest dildo detective in the world, minus the dildo.
