As much as I enjoyed my time with this game, it will stick in my mind for two things primarily. The insanely charming artwork and animation, and it's frankly outstanding character writing and voice acting. The fact that every character is funny and charming in their own special way is a small miracle in one game, let alone three games in a series. As much as I enjoyed the detective side of this story, and its myriad of puzzles, what really stands out as special is the witty back and forth between the characters. Which is good, because that's 90% of this game. This is basically a choose your own adventure novel with voice acting. Most of it consists of listening to characters think and talk in circles as you question every suspect about... everything and everyone. In a gameplay sense, that means searching each location for clues and then effectively waiting for a puzzle to become available as you question each suspect on whatever you might find. In actuality, you probably won't even mind because listening to the custom dialogue that each suspect has for every clue, even if they know nothing at all about it, is absolutely delightful all the way through. This isn't an Obra Dinn, 100% gameplay, kind of game. If you have no interest in the witty comedy of a bunch of cartoon characters, the occassional puzzle might not be enough to win you over. But I think you will be interested in the comedy of these witty cartoon characters, all the same. That's where the developers' love and enthusiasm for their creation shines through most clearly. The fact that there are also puzzles and deductions to boot simply becomes the icing on a very colourful cake.

Another excellent, charming murder-mystery puzzle game. From the creators of Tangle Tower, this new case sees detectives Grimoire and Sally exploring a locked-room murder aboard a rumour-shrouded submarine. Tangle Tower was already a well-polished game, and Mermaid Mask only improves upon it. The visuals are charming and lively; the voice work is perfect; the premise and setting ooze mystery. The puzzles are enjoyable, though they're not really the main focus and are generally pretty easy. The game takes about 10 hours to finish, which feels just right - not too long, not too short. I did have a few minor issues with the game. Nothing major; just areas that, in retrospect, weren't fully satisfying. Some of the pacing feels lopsided; moving a little to quick or too slow in places. And many intriguing side-stories are left unresolved. I found the developer commentary (included in the game) helps a bit with this last point; perhaps we'll get more in, say, an anniversary update? Overall, I'm quite satisfied with this little tale. It's an easy recommend for anyone who likes a good murder mystery, or a mystery at sea.
10/10 game, one of the best indie games ive ever played
Playing throught the Detective Grimoire Franchise has been seeing a team improving in all the areas, from art to writing to characters to music to plots, each game is better than the last. Some Jumps are not as big, Mermaid Mask does look better than Tangle Tower but that was an already a beautiful game, Swamp to Tangle is a much bigger jump, same for the music, its at its best in this game but it was great before Some Jumps are consistent, my favorite character in Tangle would still be a good character but they would not stand out in Mermaid, none of the characters in Swamp would stand out in Tangle On every single front each game has been better than the last, the writting being the one that has improved the most There was an exception, all of the previous Grimoire games had problems with the Final reveals and the antagonist, the reveals have been not great, the true culprit was always rather boring, and the ending unsastifying and the mystrery not good Mermaid Mask biggest improvemt is Very clearly in its Reveals in the End, its antagonist and their reasoning, the FInal portion of Mermaid is the best part of the entire franchise, the Antagonist is easily the best character in all of the games combined, reaching the ending is the most satisfying moment that you will feel in the entire franchise. Mermaid Mask is the game that learned all the lessons it needed to learn and Perfected what it does to give me something that was so much more than I was expecting when I bought it, even in a world where I did not enjoy the three previous games it would have been worth it just for the Mermaid's Mask, what a game.
I can't wait to re-play it and note down all the clues within clues the developers left. Incredibly polished game. Best in the series. If you're looking for a visual novel detective story, this is up there with Phoenix Wright and Professor Layton.
Another absolute banger, I do recommend Play tangle tower first tho or else you'll miss the little references
When I saw that the creators of Tangle Tower had made a new game, I immediately bought it. I would recommend the game. It has an interesting location and has a strong underwater and whimsical theme. WHAT I LIKED The characters, voiceovers, and animation are excellent. As always, the character designs are very strong, and the characters are extremely emotive. Some characters even have unique animations that only appear once, which made those moments especially enjoyable to discover. I think the strongest part of the game is learning about the characters, understanding their motivations, and discovering the history and mystery of the location and the wider era. The voices are amazing. I especially enjoyed Sym's voiceover. It is very distinctive and helps make the character feel unique. I enjoyed all of the puzzles. They were not too easy and not too hard. Some seemed to allow multiple solutions, or were forgiving enough that you could still solve them even if you did not fully understand the intended solution. The inclusion of 3D is a really good choice. I liked seeing it used to show the submarine and different clues, including being able to see the backs of objects. The system for determining a character's secret or suspicion was also cool. You answer questions and select different locations and clues to complete deductions. I particularly liked how forgiving this system was. If you selected something incorrectly, the game simply told you it was not working and immediately let you try another answer. The user experience around progression was very strong. I really liked having check marks on characters once you completed their secrets. It was very helpful for understanding my overall progress through the game. In general, the game gives a lot of feedback for everything you do. Even small actions are acknowledged. For example, when you open an item, there is a sound effect that specifically fits that item. Love attention to detail. I also liked having chapter titles appear between major parts of the game. A full-screen "Chapter 2" or "Chapter 3" makes it much easier to understand that you are making progress. The hint system was useful overall. It helped point me toward things that could be worth investigating or asking about. The ending cinematic definitely paid off. These larger animated moments work very well and make important parts of the story feel more significant. At the end, I really enjoyed going through the art section and reading what each team member had written, as well as seeing how different clues evolved throughout development. During the credits, it was also nice to see what all of the characters were planning to do next. It is always great to see references to the previous games. I played Tangle Tower, and I enjoyed seeing those connections even though I did not fully understand all of them. NOTES TO THE DEVELOPERS Somewhere in the middle of the game, I got lost a couple of times about what I needed to do next. Eventually, I realized that I needed to show almost every clue to almost every character to unlock more dialogue or events. At that point, progression felt less like making logical connections and more like systematically clicking through every clue with every character to find the interaction that would move the game forward. I wish there had been more uncertainty around who committed the murder at the end. It would have been interesting if, near the end, there were still two plausible suspects and the player had to find the strongest clue proving why one of them could not have done it. Right now, the deduction is more about determining who could have committed the murder, and there is a fairly definitive clue pointing toward one particular person. The game walks you toward the solution a little more directly than I would prefer. There may also be slightly too much discussion about characters who are outside of the existing animated cast. Even though I played Tangle Tower, I completely missed some of the relationships between characters and how exactly they connected to the previous game, and the town families are a bit too convoluted for me to track. Most of the time this was fine since I could progress just though clues and puzzles, but some of those references were difficult to follow to get the full picture. BUGS (nothing blocking) 1. The first happened with one of the clues related to the Moon character. I could not listen to the second audio track on her clue. 2. The second involved the piece of cloth. I needed to select a particular part of the clue, but every time I selected what I believed was the correct area, the game told me it did not work. I could not progress until I closed and restarted the game. After restarting, I was able to select the same area correctly. 3. The third issue was related to the hint telling me that I needed to "discuss the case file.". It was unclear what action the game expected from me and contributed to me trying every clue with every character which unlocked further progression eventually. OVERALL Very good work. This is an amazingly high-quality game, and I would definitely recommend it. I am looking forward to the team's new releases.
This game has further refined the Detective Grimoire formula and style to the point where it shines. I highly recommend it to anyone who is a fan of point and click adventures. I also like the ending (no spoilers) and how it is structured. The writing, art and deduction game design is top notch and I command you to support it. Here's hoping we get another one of these! [Fingers crossed]
