Overall, I don't like it. This is currently my least favorite Trails game. There are a few good aspects here and there, but they are far overshadowed by the game's many flaws. And worse of all, the game hardly does anything unique compared to the others. The strengths are the same things the other games did well (namely the combat) while its weaknesses are the same just dialed up to a much greater degree. ----- The core gameplay is still good. Its an improvement over CS3, using the same system but with a few tweaks to the balance that made it a lot more bearable. The game really curbed the biggest issue I had with CS3's combat where half the bosses could just heal almost as fast as you dealt damage and added a few other tweaks to the break system and how orders strengthen over time that also contributed towards a slightly better balance. Its still an easy game, but its no longer punctuated with the occasional annoying & ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ fights that popped up so often before. Its still flawed compared to earlier Trails titles (god only knows how impossible it is to balance a game with 20 something characters) but at least its better than the other Cold Steel games. I don't care much for the gameplay. It's still a simplification of the Sky/Crossbell orbment system and the gimmicks it attaches aren’t enough to make up for other issues. But at least its serviceable. The gameplay's biggest issue by far is all the bloat. There are way too many playable characters constantly joining and leaving the party and it makes forming a cohesive team way more annoying than it needs to be. While much of the tedium is mitigated by an auto-equip feature that gives you a useable (but not very good) build, its still quite annoying to juggle so many people especially near the end when almost every character has to be used at least briefly. At least the party has a few reserve slots so you can tuck the unwanted members away and just use your main team, though this did sometimes mean I had to leave out one of my core party members when someone else was forced to occupy a party slot. ----- So the gameplay is alright. Not good, but not flawed enough to really push me towards outright disliking the game. The bigger issue for me was the story. CS4 is the longest Trails game I've played, yet it also feels like so little actually happens. The whole of Act 1 is just reminding us what happened in CS3, Act 2 is gathering all the relevant characters by revisiting every previous location, and its only in Act 3 that it feels like the story is actually going somewhere. Throw in just how many characters there are, how many locations you have to revisit, and how much background info the game feel like it needs to repeat and it all feel unbelievable bloated. I won't talk about Acts 1 and 2 since nothing important actually happens in either, but *maybe* you could say it was worth it if Act 3 was good enough to need all the buildup. But its not. Once again, you revisit a bunch of old locations, explore a new dungeon, and fight a boss battle against another
Awakener until they each finally get the closure to their character arc... and those closures all suck. I still don't care about Rutger and don't see why anybody else would, Cedric is just weird, and Arianrhod's motivations turn out to be stupid after she's been built up for like 5 games now. And don't even get me started on how Osborne's entire character is ruined by this game. Since Sky 3 he's been shown as a ruthless antagonist who will use any method available to get his way. He's power-hungry, but his means of gaining power have revolved around curbing the nobility, establishing a meritocratic government, and generally making people's lives better. Its a complex dynamic that made him a genuinely interesting figure to pin down.... and now it turns out all this political crap was just a farce so he could summon and kill the evil monster. That was his goal and its way stupider than all the things he did to accomplish said goal.
The most interesting part of the story, a major war between all the continent's countries against Erebonia, falls flat.
It only starts near the very end and stops immediately after we beat Osborne. Despite its buildup in the earlier sections of the game, Musse's master plan to defeating Erebonia is just to have everyone work together and fight a conventional war.... which is the most basic and obvious plan you could ever come up with. And the buildup to the war can't be taken seriously with how much its driven by *the curse*. Need somebody to do something irrational? Oh no, they have *the curse*! Need the population to go along with anything the plot requires of them? Oh no, *the curse* is effecting everybody! But of course all the important characters actually agree with your party and hope you win, but they won't actually do anything. Would it be too much of an issue if Vandyke, Craig, and Vander actually supported the war for non-curse related reasons? Or if they actually agreed with Rean and worked behind the scenes to do something against Osborne? No, they have to still be good guys and agree with Rean but still go along with the evil plan anyway for.... reasons. Duty and honor, I guess?
----- I don't have any particularly complex thoughts here, but that's largely because CS4 isn't a particularly complex game. And while that can be fine on its own, it makes for a terrible end to a 4-part series and leaves an even worse taste when it retroactively hurts a lot of the setup from even earlier games. Cold Steel 4 indulges in all the worst parts of the previous 3 Cold Steel games and brings them to their zenith (so far at least).

Even better gameplay, even worse writing. It was worth playing.
I started Trails in the Sky last February and finally finished the Endgame today. Those were the most amazing four months of gaming I've ever had. Those writers from Nihon Falcom are gods, how they made the setting and world-building from Sky up to Cold Steel. Forget anything about the shows you thought had the best storytelling. This series tops all of them. It's also frustrating that the series is not popular in the west, it's insulting and downright criminal.
I would recommend this game only to people who are heavily invested in the series. This is by far the worst one so far. The cast is too big, Falcom can't really commit to any of the story beats from previous games and everyone ends up being turned to friendly and in your team by the end of it. You could probably take this premise and make a children's show with it. God forbid a single character stays dead, because that would hurt some basement dweller's feelings...
The entire cold steel series suffer from one fatal flaw. It is padded beyond what is acceptable and repeats itself to a shameful degree. The story is great but takes far to long to get to the point.
if you've made it this far there's no stopping now
The finale of the Erebonia arc fails to measure up to the promise of its previous three games. If you're dying to find out how the story concludes, like I was after finishing the third game, prepare for disappointment. Pros: The heroes still have some great moments, and the interactions between them are often very engaging. The gameplay itself was surprisingly challenging at first, which makes the eventual power-scaling very satisfying. The "production" quality: music, cut-scenes, voice-acting, etc., are solid. Cons: The story, including the plot, the writing, the villains (and especially the way the heroes interact with the villains) are all a huge step down in quality compared to the previous games. On the writing/villain side of things, there are several characters who get "redemption arcs" in this game. I emphasis the quotation marks because they're laughably rushed, and completely undeserved. There are several heroes from previous games who went through redemption arcs, so I know the writers can write excellent arcs for characters like that. They just... didn't this time. It didn't even feel like they tried to. An example for the plotting issues, something that that writers have historically done very well: there was a major plot element in the previous game that is mentioned only in passing exactly 3 times in this one. I honestly thought they decided to retcon it, even though it was a huge part of the finale of the last game, since the first mention is only around halfway through the game. By the end, I realized that they didn't retcon it--the heroes just apparently didn't care about it enough to react or talk about it at all, which was a bizarre choice, and just awful story-telling. I like Class VII. I think they're great heroes. But great heroes deserve great stories. Great heroes deserve great villains. Class VII wound up with a messy, rushed story, and bafflingly unsatisfying villains. I love the Liberl and Crossbell games. I wanted to love the Erebonia quartet too; and I did, up to this entry. The finale of such a long story should be its best moment. To be fair, this game had moments where there was a glimmer of what made the previous entries great, but they were few and far between. Overall, I'm sad about the downturn of quality in this entry, and I'm not sure if I'm going to continue with this series. It's a shame, as it's been one of my absolute favorites.
"YES, SIR! YES, YOUR MAJESTY" ABSOLUTE CINEMA
I just finished the game, I enjoyed the very very end of this experience. Getting emotional during the post credit scene after playing through a game with characters you care about having some good things happening to it is normal. But yeah even with that, between the awful writing of cold steel 3 & 4, the copy pasted gameplay from 1 and 2 to 3 and 4, the other copied ♥♥♥♥ from 3 to 4, the fact that the story barely moves forward and nothing seems to happen cuz literally everyone is an ally even if they fight us, the entire writing, everything makes this game one of the most awful games I've played writing wise & boring ass gameplay wise since, even if the fighting is interesting and deep, having to go do the same very formulaeic things over and over in many areas becomes so mind numbing that the gameplay starts to feel like a punishment, keeping you away from information you do not get. So while CS4's first chapter is good (cuz less characters, they can finally breathe and talk to each other until Rean is back) and the very end is good (learning ♥♥♥♥ about ouroboros and the world, FINALLY AFTER 6 GAMES SINCE SKY3) everything else deserves to ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ burn in hell. Or Gehena. --------------------------- TLDR: Just skip cold steel overall and watch a summary on youtube, and pray the games after go back to the standard of writing and lower bloat from the 5 games before this saga. Y'know the worst thing is, if I wasn't this into the 5 games before cold Steel, I'd never have tried to push through this. Meaning I'm actually gonna be playing the next game in that series... Eventually... Maybe after a year long break. Please no more garbage harems. I need characters to interact with not just wannabe Kirito.
