Hailed as one of the largest, longest and most meticulously detailed turn-based JRPG series of all time, this first chapter in the ongoing Trails saga sets the stage for what's quickly become Ys developer Nihon Falcom's most popular and best-selling franchise in their entire 30+ year history.

Discounts
Every price cut of more than 20% we have observed, in each market that quoted one, with this game's chart position on either side of it. These are episodes, not a model: a sale is one event, and one event cannot tell you what the next one will do.
Reviews, worldwide (the counter carries no country): 1.43/day in the week to Sep 3 → 0.14/day in the week after.
For scale, across Steam · Top Sellers · Brazil over the last 30 days: the 26 chart moves that followed a price cut of more than 20% went a median of 7 places towards #1, and the 2,400 moves with no price cut behind them went 2 away. One store, one chart, one country — it is the only place we have enough observations to say even that.
Prices outside the United States have been collected since 6 August 2026 and chart positions since 19 July 2026, so a cut older than that has no market to compare and a market that joined later has no history yet. Nothing here is converted between currencies.

What can I say about the Trails franchise that already hasn't been said? Probably not much, so I won't and will instead opt for what these games have done and are currently doing for me. I'll start with that I'm not far into this franchise at all (time of posting, about three quarters of the way through Sky 3rd) but that doesn't devalue the importance of it in my eyes. The Trails series has been one that I've had on my list for many years now to dive into. Yet I could never find the time or energy to sink myself into a franchise that is as long as deeply connected with one another as the games continue. I knew that I'd need the proper time to be able to give this series the attention that I knew it deserved. Earlier this year, I was diagnosed with cancer and that naturally came with its own shell-shock of emotions and worries. It also freed up a lot of my time. Cancer and chemotherapy is extremely taxing on the body, so I'm no longer able to go outside as much as I'd like to or used to. Nor am I currently able to work anymore and found myself sitting on the couch or in my office twiddling my thumbs. I live on my own in my apartment also and don't really have family close by to visit me to keep me company. So of course, the most I have at my disposal is time, my own thoughts and my computer. Rather than sitting in the thoughts of panic and fear through beginning my treatment constantly like I was doing, I instead frantically searched for something to get lost in. A world and story so vast and enthralling that I wouldn't have to think about what's going on inside my body or the horrors surrounding reality. That's where Trails in the Sky began to shine like a beacon in my Steam library. So I took the plunge and fired it up. Trails in the Sky started off extremely slow and with how my mind works, I will admit I struggled to keep a steady focus for some time. But no matter how I may have struggled, I couldn't find myself pulling away from the game. I always kept interest in wanting to see more and find out why people hold this series as highly as they do. I quickly found out that this was a JRPG unlike any other that I had played or was used to. There was no world ending event, no big bad villain showcased right from the gate. Instead I was met with a game that knew how to take a step back and focus on the world itself and the characters living within it through the main cast and the NPCs scattered around Liberl. A world that you could pull the brakes on and soak in the sun and admire all of its beauty. From the scenery, the soundtrack and the little details within each town. Once I began to see that, the game began to occupy my every waking thought. I'd go to bed wondering where the story could go next, who I was going to meet and what antics Estelle, Joshua and the gang would find themselves in next. Trails in the Sky is a game that has also managed to open my mind to brighter outlooks on the future through all that's going on and to see the light at the end of my recovery journey which once felt darker than ever. This is thanks to the wonderful writing and narrative of the many cast of characters (Agate is my personal favourite so far in the series). Beyond all of that beauty, unbeknown to me, was a bombshell of a finale after all is said and done that left my jaw hanging on the floor and *immediately* without hesitation made me go and buy the second game. I can't think of a single time any video game ending has left me that stunned and completely caught off guard and antsy to play the next one as badly as Trails in the Sky did. It's truly a masterpiece on another level. Like I mentioned, I'm not far into this franchise at all. But I also feel like that goes to show just how big of an impact a damn good game and story can have on you in such a short period of time, regardless of how many there are in the series. The second game was just as incredible, but I shan't write about my thoughts of that one in this review. All I'll mention is that it lived up to my expectations and beyond and still provided me with the same joy and wonder that the first one did in full. Overall, to round things off, this is a franchise I feel I got into at the perfect time. In a time that's extremely isolating, scary and sometimes uncertain, Trails has been a beacon of light for me to wade through the darkness with and I can't possibly thank Nihon Falcom enough for that. I plan on sticking through the franchise right the way through until I'm fully caught up. I sure as hell have the time to do so and I can't wait to be able to converse with the community on this wonderful franchise down the line, especially when I'm all better. So, do I recommend Trails in the Sky? Of course I do, without a shadow of doubt. If you've ever been on the fence about playing these games, I can't possibly express how much you should take the leap. I'm aware some people are thrown off by the art style and such with it being older. While that's not a problem for myself as I really enjoy these sorts of styles for games. The remake, Trails in the Sky 1st has just launched and from what I've heard, it's an extremely faithful remake while providing many QoL changes for new players. So maybe that'll be more your jam! There's also a free demo for it for you to try out too which allows you to play the entire prologue chapter (6 hours roughly!!) and carry that save into the full game. I shall end my ramble here, but for those that have read this far, thank you for listening to a guy's tale. I truly hope each and every one of you goes out there and lives life to the fullest, explore, take in the sun, be kind and love everyone around you. Be like the Bracer's that Estelle and Joshua set out to be. Much love to you all. <3

Finally decided to explore Trails series in 2025 on RTX 4080 monster rig... And I regret nothing! Style aged surprisingly well (now I know where Ragnarok Online lifted it's art choices), writing and story are truly top-notch, plus gameplay is OK enough to not annoy you. Estelle is a gem of a main character that I didn't know about for so long. Now she is my abusive shouty waifu with a bouncy stick. Other cast is equally brilliant and fun with great progression and really playful adptation from XSEED. These are gonna be fun 50-70 hours. A few tips though: some backgrounds are not feeling well on 1440p so stay within 1080p, plus re-install or install fresh Klite Codec Pack for the game to be able to play FMV cutscenes. Otherwise, it works great both on modern gaming PC and on Steam Deck.
It's not a big epic adventure where you save the world from an evil sorcerer and kill the god of death, or travel back in time to stop a mad king from destroying the world. It's two kids travelling around, seeing the world, making friends, helping people, and learning how to live up to their own expectations. It's peak.
A genuinely fantastic RPG with one of the kindest settings I've played through. What I mean by this is that through every pore and interraction with this game, there is a played straight sense of good will and faith, even with villainous characters and your typical baddies. Wheres many other games may seek to twist the intentions and direction of the story, almost every single time this game will instead choose to proceed in a manner that instead gives the player a more hopeful and good faith depiction. Beyond this attitude, which I personally think is this games biggest strength, the story itself is a wonderful classic style journey of our young protagonists learning how to be heroes in their world, meeting the various peoples of their kingdom and resolving their issues all whilst developing and growing themselves, perhaps even unravelling greaters mysteries of the world itself. The combat is a satisfying and flexible turn-based romp with some light tactics elements and there is plenty enough compelling side content for any player to chew on. It should also be said that any player should look into installing the voice acting patch for the greatest experience. I cannot recommend this game enough. Do yourself a favour and download the demo for the remake now if you are on the fence. Go! Get it now!
Great game and great accessibility! You can play this entirely with just a mouse. That is extremely rare for a retro style RPG. Also the ending Made me tear up a little bit. Shut up
With the remake coming up, I wanted to get in on the ground floor with this series and see what the hype was about. I really didn't know what to expect as had purposely kept myself in the dark about the Trails games, but I can safely say that after this initial outing I'm desperate to play more. For me, this game is carried by its story, characters and world building. It was so refreshing to play a JRPG where the stakes were relatively low
for the most part!
and instead focused on small, personal problems. While this all does eventually tie in to a grander plot, it still manages to feel grounded throughout as the journey felt so organic. Gameplay elements like combat and the orbment system were fine, I enjoyed the fighting and dungeon crawling when necessary but it really does play second fiddle to the story of Estelle and Joshua. It wasn't uncommon to go an hour or so without a battle and just soak in the moment, whether that was taking the time to reflect while doing some fishing, or helping out new friends with a
school play
. All this culminates in an ending that managed to leave me shocked even 20 years after it's original release, so I really have no choice but to carry on. I feel like I've just read the first entry of an epic saga and I've got that satisfying comfort of knowing there's plenty more volumes to go.
