You can strait up lose your entire save file randomly, which isn't saved on the cloud correctly so manual save file backups are required (otherwise you're screwed). Not to mention the game practically requires a 3rd party mod for the achievements to work for many players. The game itself would be more then recommendable without these issues that have completely ruined my experience.
Due to a lot..and mean A LOOOOT of bugs I wouldn't recommend getting it at least not in full price. I kinda enjoyed it because I love TBOI:R and its a spin off match 4 so you get the memo.

The 1 “not sold” market is read from the Steam price pass of Aug 22: that day the store answered for this game elsewhere and gave no price there. The 14 priced markets are the same rows as the table above — each the latest price we hold, dated here when it is older than that pass. The 0 marked “not asked” were not put to this store at all — either it has no storefront there or we do not collect it yet, and neither is a statement about the game. A refusal is a refusal on one day; a store can list a title again tomorrow.

So, like, I haven't really written a review before, but I felt trying to do so. Anyways, The Legend of Bum-Bo is a game that caught my attention as I am an avid fan of The Binding Of Isaac, so a few years ago I decided to give it a shot. Honestly, playing it on and off a few times the past years, the game is actually pretty fun. Gameplay has a good bit to offer, there are a decent amount of items & trinkets, a good few characters. I like the game. However, as to why this is a negative review, is because the game is incredibly buggy and I can't seem to find an answer as to why. A few examples are how the game can sometimes softlock you whenever you are picking an item after completing a room, if you were to pause or start looking at your current items, it would sometimes just softlock you and none of the buttons would work. This isn't the main issue, as it happened to me only around 3 times. The biggest problem is regarding the unlocks, as I have completed the game around 10 times, 2 times with multiple characters + 3 times as one of them (I was headed for the 45+ coin achievement), but the only achievements I got were the "beat the game with X character X amount of times". I looked at my remaining achievements and noticed I hadn't gotten the so-called "jackpot endings", and after looking at footage of what they are supposed to look like and comparing them to my own, I just don't get the achievements or unlocks for some reason. The jackpot ending is supposed to unlock an item when you hit the 3 coins in the slot machine that are in the cutscene, which I clearly see happen, but to no avail. Also, the saving system in this game is utter garbage, I don't know if it works now, but the past 4 years I have uninstalled it and installed it multiple times and there has been a 50/50 chance of my progress being saved and it being reset. In conclusion, this exact problem of the game is what is keeping me from enjoying the game. I am quite a completionist, so the fact that the game is keeping me from advancing further is very annoying. To add, looking at the steam page, it seems the game has been abandoned and doesn't seem that it will be getting an update any time soon. The only hope I have searched for is the "Windfall" mod (+the legend of bumbo hotfix, I didn't bother trying it), adding a new character, a few new items/trinkets, and supposedly fixes the achievement issue, but that only gave me a golden coin (given for completing a run with 45+ coins) for the character I played, but not the steam achievement. I only recommend playing this game if: -the game is on sale -you have infinite money to spend -you install the Windfall mod/the achievement hotfix. The base game doesn't allow you to progress. Don't play it.
even more restrictive than the root game, where a baby can (originally) only shoot his tears in four cardinal directions. either that or im very bad at connect 4 games. good luck getting the current demographic to play this over their gem games. still good though, just hard, harsh, and surprisingly uninviting. and it all seems luck of the draw and or counting on your acuity. not for many people.

It's certainly a slightly unpolished game, but it is still a pretty good time overall. There's a handful of visual bugs and some issues with the achievement popups in game and I think putting the level progression unlocks behind required playable characters is kinda annoying. Why do I have to play as Bumbo the Weird to unlock the final area of the game? Isaac never really hid any level progression behind specific characters, only the item unlocks. Small complaint and bugs aside, the main gameplay loop is surprisingly addictive. Edmund managed to make candy crush into a very fun strategy roguelite. If you liked Mewgenics for its slower paced fights and deck building strategy, maybe give Bumbo a try!
REALLY liked this game idk why its so badly reviewed another edmund banger
Edmund. Why are you neglecting me?
The Legend of Bum-bo is a refreshingly unconventional roguelike that takes familiar elements from The Binding of Isaac universe and reshapes them into a strategic puzzle adventure. Developed by Edmund McMillen and James Interactive, with Edmund McMillen serving as the publisher on Steam, the game abandons the frantic twin-stick action of its predecessor in favor of deliberate, turn-based gameplay built around matching colored tiles and managing resources. While this dramatic shift may surprise longtime fans, it ultimately creates an experience that is both intellectually engaging and highly replayable, offering a unique identity rather than simply repeating what came before. The adventure centers on Bum-bo, a lonely and eccentric character whose treasured coin is stolen, prompting him to descend into a bizarre underground realm in search of the thief. The story embraces the dark humor and unsettling themes that have become synonymous with Edmund McMillen's games, presenting a world constructed from cardboard, paper, and handmade props that resemble a child's craft project brought to life. Despite its playful appearance, the narrative explores strange creatures, twisted environments, and mysterious events that gradually connect with the broader mythology of The Binding of Isaac. The storytelling remains intentionally cryptic, encouraging players to uncover hidden details through repeated play rather than relying on lengthy exposition. Combat is driven by an inventive puzzle system that replaces traditional attacks with strategic tile manipulation. Matching different symbols on the board generates resources used to activate spells, strengthen defenses, or unleash offensive abilities against enemies. Every decision has weight because opponents respond after each player turn, making foresight and efficient resource management essential for survival. Rather than depending on quick reflexes, victories come from recognizing opportunities, planning several moves ahead, and adapting to constantly changing board layouts. This design transforms each encounter into a satisfying tactical challenge that rewards careful thinking over brute force. The roguelike framework adds significant longevity through randomized dungeons, unpredictable item drops, and a wide selection of unlockable content. Every run introduces new combinations of treasures, spells, relics, and passive abilities that dramatically influence a player's strategy. Different versions of Bum-bo become available over time, each possessing distinct strengths, weaknesses, and starting conditions that encourage experimentation. Discovering powerful synergies between items is one of the game's greatest pleasures, as seemingly ordinary abilities can evolve into devastating combinations when paired correctly. Since no two journeys unfold exactly alike, replay value remains consistently high even after dozens of completed runs. Enemy encounters steadily grow more sophisticated as players progress deeper into the adventure. Ordinary foes feature unique attack patterns and movement behaviors that require thoughtful positioning, while bosses introduce larger-scale mechanics that challenge players to balance offense, defense, and resource conservation simultaneously. The increasing complexity keeps battles engaging throughout the campaign, preventing the puzzle mechanics from becoming repetitive. Randomized upgrades also ensure that players cannot rely on a single dominant strategy, encouraging flexibility and creative problem-solving from beginning to end. Visually, The Legend of Bum-bo distinguishes itself with one of the most memorable art directions in the genre. Every character, enemy, and environment appears handcrafted from cardboard, paper, and simple craft materials, giving the game a charming yet unsettling personality. The intentionally crude animation style complements its darkly comedic atmosphere, while expressive creature designs successfully balance humor with grotesque horror. An eerie soundtrack enhances exploration and combat alike, blending haunting melodies with quirky musical cues that reinforce the game's unusual tone without becoming distracting. Although the game offers remarkable originality, it is not entirely without shortcomings. The mechanics can feel overwhelming during the opening hours due to the large number of interacting systems, spells, and item effects that players must learn. Randomized elements occasionally produce difficult situations where useful resources are scarce, resulting in runs that feel noticeably more punishing than others. Players expecting another action-heavy Isaac experience may also need time to adjust to the slower, more methodical pacing. However, those willing to embrace its strategic design will likely find the learning process rewarding as they gradually master its many interconnected mechanics. The Legend of Bum-bo succeeds because it confidently pursues its own ideas instead of relying solely on the popularity of its predecessor. Its combination of tactical puzzle gameplay, roguelike progression, imaginative presentation, and meaningful replayability results in a deeply satisfying experience that feels unlike nearly any other game in its genre. While its complexity and unconventional approach may not appeal to every player, those who appreciate thoughtful strategy and creative game design will discover a remarkably engaging adventure filled with personality, challenge, and lasting appeal.
