The game alternates levels between exploring the world and running the train. During the train segments, you complete mini-games to keep the train going, are able to craft, and have to care to the needs of whatever survivors you pick up. The survivors will all talk to each other and to you, which is a nice way to learn more about the world. That said, you're unlikely to hear all they have to say; because of the speed at which their hunger and health meters drain, along with juggling the train itself, you're not going to pay much attention, and you'll probably leave the train as soon as able so as to prevent their meters from getting lower than necessary. The exploration segments are enjoyable. There's lots of notes to read and worldbuilding to discover, and the combat-when not cheesed-is a good challenge that forces you to conserve bullets without making the game hopelessly difficult. That said, and as implied in my little aside, it's very cheeseable. Melee is very powerful, and if you get to where an enemy can't hit you back, then you can just hit the attack button a few times and take out entire hordes of baddies. Overall though, it's a fun little game. I liked it and I liked the story. It leaves you with a lot of questions, but the mystery is fun to me. It ends before it can get repetitive.

Played the main game twice so far, with some years in between. It holds up as an amazing piece of storytelling, with mechanics that are quick to grasp but more difficult to get right every time. With only one bug found that is the charged melee not charging, it's still smoother than most AAA games of recent memory. The DLC is likewise polished and adds to the main story without being needed - a perfect bit of DLC and well worth getting to support the Dev if nothing else. I recommend checking every nook and cranny to really get all the story, and prepare to enter a living, breathing world.
