This is more or less The Division 1.5 as it takes place between 1 and 2. As a free to play game, it could be worse but it also could be a lot better. For starters, the system and menu navigation and UI is atrocious. It's got a Microtransaction store that's shoved in your face and made up of Gatcha garbage which is unnecessary when you can just progress and level up just by simply playing the game. Which brings me to my next issue. The game play loop is bland as hell. You can play through the mediocre story which, after awhile is locked behind you having to do anything and everything else (Weekly bounties, weekly missions, Daily quests, the world events on the map etc.) multiple times to slowly level up and progress the story. I don't play enough of these F2P games, but if that's the gameplay loop for the majority of them and story content is locked behind a level/gear grind, I'm out big time. For some reason your playable character talks like they think that's going to provide emotional weight, well it doesn't. Visually it's like playing through a AA PS4 game, not bad but not great (and that's with everything on max settings) so I can only imagine what it looks like on mobile. If your into crafting, there's no point. It takes real time for things to be crafted, an SMG as part of the crafting tutorial side mission took 15 hours, in that time I leveled up and got better gear from just playing through the random activities in the world. The side activities are exactly what you expect from Ubisoft open world games, nothing memorable or enjoyable. The game is broken in so many ways that it's not worth laying out other then to simply say, don't waste your time on this game. There are far better F2P games than this mobile slop.
sucks
Its the biggest piece of dog shi. Grinding grinding, but with daily lvl cap that u can max out within 2hrs easily. Even to complete main missions u have to grind world events and the second to the last one mission is literally to drop 6 legendary items xDDD. I know its a mobile game but doesn't meet PC standards at all. Only for fans of the franchise.
Just a hot mess of mobile garbage. I went in with low expectations and was still disappointed.
They censor the name of our lord JESUS CHRIST
I have played this garbage for around 20 minutes. So far I've seen The Division (1) story and setting, In tutorial I couldn't see the scope of my sniper rifle, and I actually couldnt finish the very first mission as I looted a new gun and the game wanted to force me to equip it - closed the window too fast as I didn't wanted this weapon and couldn't progress or even open EQ to change to this weapon. Complete softlock, i'm not gonna waste anymore of my time trying to fix your game. Peak Ubislop.
This iteration of The Division is a blatant insult to players like me, who played since the headstart of Divisoin 1 (truly first wave). It is obviously a bad port that shows, the focus was originally just for smartphones. I started this on a smartphone when it was released, but the controls with virtual sticks aren't my cup of tea. Now on PC with at least mouse and keyboard, it is better so handle but so bad in many ways: Just 2 examples: - Graphics: way behind what is possible, even on phones - Gameplay: targets the wallet of the players more than anything So in the end: if you liked any Division before this, give it a pass and play something better.
As someone who's first experience into The Division being this game, I am absolutely sold on the rest of the franchise because of this game. The hate towards the microtransactions is entirely unfounded, as they're really not that prevalent, AND the few microtransactions that exist are almost entirely cosmetic. Yes, there are a few things that are microtransactions that add power, but not that many. Further, the loot crates are entirely optional, as the same loot can be retrieved from the game world.
Pros:
- Very enjoyable. As someone who has never really enjoyed third-person shooters, let along an RPG style shooter. This game (and series) is a lot of fun. - Smooth gameplay, great community, and amazing min-maxing strategy to this. I played this with a friend who has played prior Division games, and he states that it is definitely more simplified than other games in the series, but otherwise perfectly describes the style and vibe of The Division. - Multiple different play styles that all compliment each other. Certain paths do seem at first glance to not really be that useful in singleplayer, but YMMV as I have only tried one path so far. - Graphics are decent for what this is. A mobile port should not be expected to have top-level graphics, especially at the game size that it is. That being said, they're not the absolute best. Compared to other games that are releasing right now, I put this at a solid 6.5/10. - Live world, which is amazing. Doing non-mission objectives let other people not in your party help, which is absolutely amazing. This is made even better as the loot isn't just for one person, it persists for everyone (until it's despawned) so that the party AND the helper(s) can pick it up. Literally no negatives.
Neutral:
- Mobile game. That's really it. The game is a mobile port, so many things still have that feel. That being said, they definitely worked this out a lot to make it look and feel better. - Decent story, but when playing with friends, it may be annoying to have cutscenes that aren't much more than world building that also are for individual people, rather than cutscenes that all players of a party are able to participate in. - Slightly annoying tutorial. I put this at neutral, however, because the game (rightfully) assumes a player has never been in the entire series, and so tries its best to teach the player as much as it can. - PVP, but with a twist. The Dark Zone is definitely required to progress in the game outside of missions, however the PVP here comes with a twist in that you have a rating for how bad of a person you've been to other players. Steal their loot? Lose rating. Kill someone? Lose rating. These actively make it so that when you are a bad person, you will be targeted. This caters to both sides of the PVP extraction genre, in that you still have PVP as an option, but simultaneously it remains a mostly PVE environment. - Controls and movement in general is weird to get the hang of, but is unique to The Division as a series, as per my friend. If you really can't stand it, then change the controls to something that feels right. Otherwise, this game was built to be as close to the other games in the series as possible while still being a mobile port.
Cons:
- Sound design is just awful. Hopefully Ubisoft actually fixes this issue, but I'm unsure due to their track record. That being said, The Division's team is pretty good with what they do. For those that would like to know, the sound design seems to be 1:1 ported from mobile, as indoor sounds are CRUNCHY. Additionally, I was having issues with the sound settings resetting itself every time I fast-travel or enter a mission area, which includes when I enter cutscenes. - Can be a little iffy at times with server lag. It makes the enemies a little jumpy sometimes, but otherwise is perfectly fine for a day-two steam release.
Conclusion
Overall, this game is a lot of fun, even more so with friends. The whole game is really well put together, and is a great way to dip your toes into the franchise without spending the money on the main series. Some issues here, but it makes up for it by being fun, and is overall much better than most other games that have been released lately. A large amount of the reviews on steam seem to be holding some form of resentment towards any game having any microtransaction at all, and really don't talk about the issues they have with the game properly. Further, most of the negative reviews come from people who only put a few minutes to a couple of hours into the game. After playing for 6 hours at the time of review, I absolutely can say that most of the issues people may have with the game are either not noticeable enough to be game-breaking, or are non-issues entirely.
TL;DR
This title for the Division franchise is definitely a good first step into the franchise without compromising on money. Decent graphics, decent gameplay, decent story, everything about it is good and satisfying to have something with care put into it from a developer as universally hated as Ubisoft. Overall, I rate this game an 8/10, with graphics at a 6.5/10, gameplay at a 9/10, and story at a 8/10. Get this game, ignore the small handful of microtransactions, and play with some friends. It will make for a fun game night and overall let you enjoy something worthwhile.
