Really beautiful game, story and art is nice, the ending really puts everything into question. You may have a strategy with your characters that works, but once you reach the final battle, that combination may be useless, requiring you to start the game from scratch to develop a meta build. The first time I played the game I had to go back and build a better team. Not a great design mechanic, and I don't like how I have to keep that in mind as I play through the game. The game is more about the story and art anyways, so I don't see why you need such a difficult boss in the end. The game is good, but I think the boss at the end can sour the experience. I've beat it twice now, but its stupidly frustrating and pulls you out of the story that has built up to that point. Once you've beat the boss, the emotions at the end are kind of wasted, as you're just glad to get out, speed through the credits and walk away for a bit. It does the overall experience a disservice.

The Banner Saga is a completely original blend of visual novel, tactics game, and RPG. The interplay between the narrative choices you make and the tactical battles is very interesting. Just as you feel you get into a rhythm, you lose one of your party members, either permanently or temporarily, and need to adjust accordingly. The game manages to break away from any min-maxing, as you never know how long characters will be around, and when they leave, they take everything you invested in them. The story itself is well told, and the beautiful graphics and music really paint a vivid picture. It definitely managed to hit me emotionally, which is pretty rare for a video game. I’m looking forward to playing the second game!
Incredibly boring, little to no voice acting, combat is one dimensional, ugly to look at and zero power fantasy. The story is kinda nice but the actual gameplay is a snooze fest.
A norse mythology-inspired RPG with a focus on narrative, consequential decision-making, and turn-based strategic battles. The story is interesting, the art direction & animation are stellar, and the decision to combine attack power and health into a single stat is an innovative choice I’ve never seen before; but that’s about as far as my praise goes. In particular, the fact that decisions you make outside of battle can lead to the unforeseeable and seemingly random deaths of important characters is completely unacceptable as far as I’m concerned. The final battle is also obnoxiously difficult. While this game is the first part of a trilogy, I don’t see myself ever playing the other two parts. 5/10
It's been over ten years since The Banner Saga was released in 2014, and it remains one of my favorite games of all time. I love the entire trilogy, but there is something special about the first game. The timeless hand-drawn visuals are stunning. The art direction in this game remains unique to this day. Couple this with the incredible soundtrack and you have the groundwork for an amazing atmosphere. I cannot stress enough how good the story and writing is. It grabs you from the first moment and does not let you go until you finish the game. As you flee danger with your caravan, you are always on edge, never feeling safe and rarely getting moments to catch your breath. Every decision you make has lives at stake, and even seemingly minor choices can have major consequences. Over the course of your journey, you will come to love the characters in your caravan, which makes losing one of them all the more devastating. The world building in Banner Saga is fantastic. It gives you just enough information to feel familiar with the world and make you want to know more, without just lore dumping you. The turn-based combat is solid. All characters have their strengths and weaknesses, allowing for many different tactics and character rosters. The Battles can be quite challenging even on normal difficulty, but never feel unfair. Hard difficulty will punish you for even small mistakes, so if you want a game where you really have to think about every move, this is for you. After all these years, I still have not found a game that comes close to Banner Saga's unique formula. You can usually pick up the entire trilogy on sale for around 10€, which is a bargain for the quality you get. I have nothing but praise for the game and hope that Stoic will return to the Banner Saga universe one day.
One of the best indie strategy games I've ever played. Insanely good world building and character writing. Game is harsh but making mistakes and learning to go with those mistakes is such a good part of the game. Kick started this game years ago and never regretted it
I couldn't get into this for the life of me, despite having great fondness for Norse mythology/stories. Also note that given there are two more games in the series to purchase if you want to complete the trilogy, you definitely need to be heavily invested in this game and its battle system to enjoy it. I wasn't able to get there by a long shot, and am bouncing off this series at the outset. On the strong side, the art is terrific, and it feels like a bit of time went into the battle system. Unfortunately, there isn't enough story for me to enjoy trudging through those same (plodding, ridiculously slow) battles and uselessly story-bisecting choices, which make no mistake, are quite numerous. As much as I wanted to let suspension of disbelief carry this game, the overly difficult and frequent battles always kicked me back out relentlessly. That made the amazing graphics and what there is of a story all but moot. Battles are seriously way over-the-top difficult, too, so if that's your "thing", this is your game trilogy! The "decisions matter" portion never kicked in for me, that I could tell. None of the decisions I made (or was coerced into making, more more accurately) felt as though they carried any real weight, and in fact most of the choices felt contrived and needlessly encumbered my enjoyment of the story, slowing it down even further. What story there was, I mean, it's thin. I see a lot of reviewers saying the ending "broke their heart", but so far all I know is I don't particularly care for any of the characters in the first few hours of the game, which isn't a great beginning. If I never identify with anyone in the game, it's really tough to enjoy it, or care about getting to that ending. (To that end, an easier play mode would really be nice for those of us who don't care about the battle system, or want to skip it entirely, as neat as it may be. I just don't really care, it's too hard for me the way its written, and that's intensely frustrating, as you can imagine.) In the end, this game is too difficult to warrant pushing through the sluggish, cumbersome battles. The overly-difficult and poorly-explained system left me bitterly discouraged, and sad it took me far too long to realize I wouldn't like this to refund. Banner Saga "plays" more like work than a game to me: for some that's a plus, for me it's certainly not.
