About
This DLC follows the ending where Jan Scientist stays on the planet. Average playtime is estimated at 20 hours.
Jan Scientist can finally pursue his true calling. While other Jans left, he stayed to lead a team of new specialists - assembled by and from himself. Only a scientific crew of perfectly aligned altered Jan Scientists can offer the expertise needed to unravel the Oasis phenomenon.
Studying nature's survival here in space is a life-defining opportunity. However, this goal-oriented plan of the Jan Scientists might not be so apparent to Jan Geologist, Biologist, Chemist, or Physicist.
The Oasis, a lush paradise that shouldn't exist, becomes the mystery you will obsessively try to solve.
Terraforming the nine arenas unlocks it, forcing the landscape to yield answers. But with each seemingly right step on a research path, the planet responds with implacable earthquakes and radiation, hinting at secrets best left undiscovered.
Your biggest hurdle? Years-long planetary cycles of scorching sunrises that force you underground. Setting a functional underground base requires building in varied soils, constructing new components, and researching modules like the Cryosleep Chamber, which buys time to witness your scientific actions' long-term effects.
Still, even in cryo-slumber, increasingly vicious cycles wear down your crew’s readiness to work.
Each planetary cooldown offers a brief window to freely explore a dramatically changed surface.
Terraformed landscape opens new building possibilities, spawns bonus-providing pickables, and lets you evolve your research-essential technology by extracting and refining new planetary resources. Specialised structures further let you transform, combine, and amplify what you gather.
Field Labs introduce new assignments for alters to continue their work while you cryosleep. But will they change once faced with the vulnerability of ageing?

For someone like me who just wanted "more The Alters" this was a good DLC. It doesn't bring a lot of major changes, but that's to be expected from a €15 product. I found the story a bit less engaging than the original game, and the ending was pretty uninspired. Still recommend to buy if you liked the orignial game and want more of the same.
I guess it was fine, more of the same, goes a lot faster than the main game, but the ending is a bit too abrupt and predictable.
Like the main game, there's a central mystery to be solved. The motivation of the main character is completely different (which isn't surprising considering the Scientist decided to stay behind in the first game while everyone else went back to Earth) - "I just want to know more about the mysteries of this planet/science. It doesn't need to have a practical use. I never really had a life on Earth anyway." It's a smaller microcosm of the main game (as a DLC epilogue it's fine, I wasn't expecting Alters 2) in terms of mechanics, and building a permanent base protected from the sun is neat. However, the writing at the end, to wrap things up in a neat bow, is inconsistent with the Scientist's personality and motivations. Ending spoilers:
The Alters chosen for field offices being content to live out their lifespans on the planet doing slow research in contentment was also an interesting narrative point. However, the ending was kind of sour for me - we find out that this is XX iteration of the Scientist and it's been 50,000 years since the expedition (a lot like Death Loop). The final problem they're trying to solve - infinite energy from quantum foam - always causes a time reset disaster, with only the base surviving and Jan bot. The other Alters, including the surface field offices and improvements are wiped. The Scientist is prematurely aged and is presented with a choice. It's a false dichotomy - either reset the cycle and try again, without handing down the previous research at all, or simply accept the failure of research and allow Jan bot and this current Scientist to die. There are multiple choices in between, such as, passing down the research to the next generation cataloguing all the failure points, or abandoning the research (it's not necessary considering there might be no one to use it back on Earth, and it's not really needed on the planet itself) and simply building out an entire civilization on the planet - as there's an assumption Earth is extinct since no one has returned in 50,000 years, thus ensuring the continuation of humanity. It's demonstrated that the QC is capable of making other people, not just Jan. The celebrity's assistant was intentionally made into a chat bot instead of a full Alter, which seems to be possible. This binary thinking didn't make much sense given the Scientist's less emotional way of thinking - why would he repeat an experiment that was doomed to fail, for no purpose, without passing down research? It's antithetical to the scientific method. And he did it XX times, which seems impossible.
I enjoyed the ride, understood it for what it is (a DLC, not a sequel, so smaller is ok) but it didn't stick the landing by writing the Scientist in an inconsistent way right at the end. Still, I'd recommend it if you enjoyed the first game.
I enjoyed this DLC, liked the new gameplay with the pipes, gives a pretty good puzzle with infrastructure. The characters are a bit more limited in this story, but they are still interesting. The story is more linear with less choices, but didn't mind it that much, luckily it doesn't overstay its welcome. If you liked the management part of the base game you will probably enjoy this DLC too. There are some bugs, minor misspellings to bigger gameplay ones, but luckily not major gamebraking ones.
This is amazing DLC. There are new gameplay elements/ While it's not that hard to play on hard difficulty, I'm glad that you can create all the alters in the single playthrough which is not possible in the main game without mods. Definitelly an amazing addition to the main game. I think the map is even bigger
