Terra Nil is a game I have incredibly complicated feelings about, though I wouldn't go quite so far as to say I wish there was an option between yes and no for recommendation. I've followed the game since it was an Itch prototype and I've seen it grow and change. It used to be a charming lil pixel art game (albeit one that still had a lot of the gameplay annoyances of the current version). One day they announced they were pivoting to a more "ghibli inspired" art syle, which to me is a bit like hearing the solarpunk grim reaper knocking on the door, especially since I loved the pixel style, but no matter. I pirated the full release and played it for ages, and then when I finally just bought the damn game the vitae nova update had inverted my scroll direction for some reason with no way to change it. Just one of many tests of my patience. I don't even know how I can really express my frustrations with this game. I want to like it so bad and every single time it does something to piss me off. (see the scroll wheel). It's trying to be a game about restoring ecosystems, but it's clearly more interested in the ~cosy~ aesthetic of that idea more than any actual practice. For a glaring example see the levels that mash the antarctic and arctic together and plop some penguins next to polar bears. I do think the game could have given an explanation of the idea of ecosystem services and how it's more important to restore basic things with a few species first off than it is to totally perfectly redo an ecosystem, but it did not. Ultimately the actual sorta "educational" value of this game is low, especially if you're interested in ecology, though it certainly still has its charms. Another key point is that I think there's a bit of a core gameplay issue with how the puzzle solving works, it often asks you to think ahead so many steps that you can't possibly actually anticipate how your third stage is going to play out (♥♥♥♥ the animal happiness mechanic being mandatory, it sucks so bad) and you often end up desperately making a mess of your landscape trying to get the last 2% water availability to make some ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ brown bears happy so you can end the level already. The game sorta sells itself as realaxing but it's actually seriously frustrating I admire the teams dedication, and the fact that they've put so much time and love and free content into this game for so long. It's clearly a labour of love, in spite of all its clunkiness. Ultimately Terra Nil is a game with a bit of an identity crisis about both its aesthetic and gameplay, and that gameplay can be rather clunky and infuriating at times. There are many many design decisions that I personally would not have made if I was making this game, and it feels rather hollow at times, sorta like feelgood headlines about how "we're totally fighting back against climate change, trust me!" that people latch onto to alleviate their anxiety about the world. It has a bit of a "we are the virus!" feel about human relationship to nature, and posits an ecosystem lacking humans as a pure and fixed one, which could be read as a rather colonial view of nature and ecosystem restoration. (I might add that it's incredibly northern hemisphere centric with its ecosystems and species) It could do with more story, it could do with better gameplay, it could do with a slightly clearer setting (are we fully just going off to colonise another planet??) It could do with more settings and UI customisation, it could do with so much more. But it's still a game I've sunk a lot of time into over the years, even if some of that is out of a bit of stockholm syndrome. Are the graphics nice? - Yeah they're pretty good Is the gameplay fun? - Do you like losing in Mahjong? This game feels like losing in mahjong. Does it run well? - No! Is it worth it? - Honestly? Yeah, it's pretty good. If they add any more achievements I'm going to ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ kill myself.

Didn't find it fun. Not a management game I would recommend, many others are better than this one.
This game was a new spin for me on a city-builder. Its interesting that you spend the first half of any given map/mission by strategically placing buildings around the map that you'll eventually gladly destroy in late game stages. What you're doing is actually cleansing various toxic environments, conditioning the land, cleaning the water and then, introducing different biomes like forest, beaches, rocky mountain sides. All of this in pursuit of luring new animal life to your thriving region. One of the keys for success involves climate manipulation to produce different effects on the world, critical to creating the right balance for nature. You'll explore tropical beaches, frozen tundras, rivers of lava and the beauty of the savannah. Once life has returned and is thriving, you'll leave no trace by removing all of the noisy and disruptive structures that are no longer needed. And just when I thought I'd be getting bored with using the same strategy on every world, each new world introduces new tools and variations which require you to experiment and learn how to use the structures most efficiently for that particular wasteland. The game is beautiful and detailed, and one of the more compelling features involves taking snapshots of the new life as it thrives in the world. Totally relaxing, but at times challenging in the later worlds. Highly recommend, 4.8/5!
Can we have more maps???? LOL I've finished all maps (including the Heatwaves new map) on the easiest level. Gotta build up my courage to challenge it's higher difficulties level. I'm so into Terra Nil whenever I need strategic chill game to stimulate my mind, as you can see on how many hrs I've played. I highly recommend this game!!
Can be a little clunky and frustrating at times, but the challenge is a part of the fun and overall is a relaxing and satisfying game to enjoy!
A ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ delight! Perfect reverse sim city builder, makes you feel like a cosy little do-gooder (complimentary). A really happy place to slide into after a tough day.
Most of the game is very enjoyable. Some maps have more of a puzzle element than others but, for the most part, they've balanced the interesting, challenging, and relaxing quite well. Unfortunately, I have to agree with many other reviewers: the mandatory photo nonsense entirely spoils the experience for me. If it were optional- for achievement-hunters, for example- I'd almost certainly appreciate its inclusion but, as is, it's just unnecessary tedium which feels like it was crammed in there to pad out each map's ending and artificially extend the player's gameplay time.
