This game does a great job of pulling off deep strategy in a fun way, while also having enough varying degrees of difficulty to keep it interesting. The characters are actually fleshed out with personalities and not just 2d, but you can also just skip all the dialogue quickly if you want to. There's a lot of optional things you can do, providing extra content, and character customization is nice too. The story is complicated, but the game makes sure you know what's going on and why you're doing what you're doing with a map and pin system that's very helpful. I don't have anything negative to say about the game.
A great tactical game with a top notch humor. The possibility to make the game more challenging by personnal setting is well done.
The humour is great, and the early missions are great fun, but later on it sort of comes off the rails a little. With the right upgrades, it's fairly easy to find an infinite combo that will let you clear an entire level in a single turn - and, sure, I could just *not* do that, but a game that makes it far too easy to bypass any challenge regardless of difficulty isn't going to get a positive review.
Huge amount of fun
Following the development of this game for several years has been a fun ride. I remember hearing about the concept wayyyy back, and every 4-5 months I'd check the page to see what had been done. In some ways I never thought the game would be more than a fun aesthetic: And then it released. This game, rocks. It goes hard. The gameplay is really fun and challenging and never really got boring to me; I'm not the best person to assess why it's so good, but from an uneducated perspective it was fantastic. But what kept me hooked was the superb writing. TBW is surprisingly funny, way more than I expected for a game about magical military realism, and it tempers that comedy with discussions on the mindsets of the characters and their flaws. It takes a certain kind of person to constantly engage in violence for a living and TBW is more than willing to dive into the characters' psyche (In some levels literally) to assess what drives them to Be Like That, and it does it without getting too heavy or too snarky and quippy. I played the whole thing on Steam Deck, and it ran as smooth as I could ask for, and the control scheme worked wonderfully too. The game also has a host of accessibility features I like. Can't beat a level? Just skip it. The game doesn't punish you for doing so. Each level has optional challenges, but the game stresses these are just optional and never forces you to complete them. Plus, some of them you'll find yourself doing as part of the gameplay anyway, so it never feels like you're underachieving. Struggling to connect the dots in the pinboard sections (A fantastic bit of gameplay to keep you engaged in the story mind you, great idea)? You can ask the other characters for hints. Great stuff. TBW gets a big recommendation from me. I love it. You won't regret buying it at full price.
What an absolute gem of a game. Great writing, great tactical puzzles, and a beautiful vector art style. The kind of game where I got to the end and felt sad that I couldn't spend any more time with these characters.
A relatively short and enjoyable tactical game. some complex missions but nothing too hard even with following the optional challenges in each mission. its best part is fun characters the the writers must have enjoyed greatly while writing. its comedic timing is also great and it plays the fence of being funny in a serious situation and playing it streight pretty well. id love to see these characters again in some way <3
