About

Subway Builder is a hyperrealistic transit simulation game built using live data from US, UK, Irish, French, and Japanese cities.
Real-World Passenger Simulation
Millions of commuters are generated from Census and Redistricter data and simulated using the same pathfinding algorithms you use on your phone. Your job is to design a route network that gets the most people to their destination as fast as possible. Juggle station placement, transfer dynamics, and train frequency to maximize ridership.
In-Depth Analysis
Explore how individual commuters weigh tradeoffs between wait times, transfers, income distribution, delays, and more, to pick their commute. Understand which routes, stations, and trains your commuters take and use that information to optimize your network.
You must also find the right balance between cost and time using this analysis. Too many trains on a line or an overcrowded station may cause delays or disruptions.
Authentic Data
The US, UK, Ireland, France, and Japanese census records home and workplace locations. The game generates millions of commuters with homes from that and then uses a distance-based gravity model to assign them all workplaces. They're also assigned times to leave to/from work in a distribution similar to real life. Please note that a broadband connection is required to maintain the real data used by the game.
This decision is then made based on how long each commute method takes, how much it costs, and the value of their time (different commuters can have different incomes).
If they decide to take the subway you can follow their commute (and thousands of others simultaneously) as they get to work. If a train is delayed or cancelled, it will affect their commute and future commuters will take that into account.
College and airport commuters are also simulated and they behave differently since they have different income distributions and commuting times. Federal data is used for college student counts and FAA data for airports.
Current cities in Subway Builder include: Atlanta, Austin, Baltimore, Boston, Charlotte, Chicago, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Honolulu, Houston, Indianapolis, Miami, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, New York, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Pittsburgh, Portland, Salt Lake City, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, St Louis, and Washington in the US. Birmingham, Liverpool, London, Manchester, and Newcastle in the UK. Paris, Marseille, Lyon, in France. Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, Sapporo, Sendai, Hiroshima, and Nagoya in Japan, and Dublin in Ireland.

I really like the game! I've been watching it grow for a while and it's a lot of fun. It's almost everything that I thought it would be.
Pros
It's very detailed simulation, and the modding on it is fantastic. While there are mostly just US and UK cities, there are maps from mods that, at the time of review, anyone can submit or download to the mods page. The simulation has details that I never dreamed would make it into a game, and if you want to hyperoptimize, the specs are available to you for each train so you can. In terms of the mods, it adds a lot of QoL stuff, as well as things like a "move it!" and track anarchy if you want to play like that. Of course, as above, there are also maps of places like Paris and Melbourne and so on. There are also other trains that mods can add, pretty obviously. I would definitely recommend playing with a few QoL mods, which I'll get into below. It's really easily playable even without a GPU, too.
Cons
TL;DR: The only qualms I have are that it's really hard at the start because there's not a whole lot of instruction, you kinda have to either follow guides or experiment a few times on a few different maps to figure stuff out on your own. There's a few things that you would expect to be able to work, but at current, don't. One example is, at a quad station, being able to turn around on the outside lines. You can't have four different lines turn around at the same station at the same time with one on each platform, but there's no indication of this. Catchment areas for stations aren't really shown, and there isn't an indication of how big the catchment areas are for stations at all, but there is a mod that shows them for you. It's a little difficult at first to get a sense of scale for the "demand view", but you get used to it pretty quick. When you click a node, it tells you when people want to leave and want to arrive at that node. This is really useful, but there isn't an indication that airports have much more uniform demand across the day, you have to just figure that out on your own, again, with no other indication that you should click on it. The tutorial, at this point in time, basically shows you how to build each part of a track, which is sufficient if you just wanna mess around and figure out the mechanics for yourself like I do, but it's more of a "this is how you build" and not a "this is how you play the game". It feels kinda like if simcity just showed you how to build roads and zone residential, then throws you into the game.
Final recommendations
Even with all that in mind, it feels like playing RCT2 for the first time again, and it's still a lot of fun once you kinda figure out how things work. This game just came out, and it's definitely still got a few kinks to work out in its early days, with guidance or visualizations or what-have-you, but I would definitely recommend it to people that played cities skylines to mess around with traffic and public transit. It already feels amazing in that regard.
a truly excellent game/simulator, i've been waiting and watching all the pre release videos by the youtubers for months and so happy to have the game on steam now
confusing at first, good overall
Very good. One quick help for beginners (me : ) )- Start with Honolulu hawaii ;its the only small dense city in the us and the mountains limit the city in one nice long corridor. The others feel too intimidating to start off with. The game is essentially a google maps extension with realistic passenger modeling visualized in good ui with a cities skylines like ( but better ) metro builder. I love how intense the detail is with the modelng and the ways you can intimidatly look into the route of your passengers it makes it feel like a realistic model based on Us census data ;). To be fair this game was made specifically for me and playing in the long run will be dependent on how big the modder community is. good and stable on mac
