One of the best games in this genre of Kings Field-likes. This and Lunacid are the best ones so far. The atmosphere and ambiance is perfect, and the music is a chefs kiss. The worldbuilding and lore is so very interesting and makes you imagine and play with it. Items hidden in plain sight and sometimes when you get to into hard to reach places, rewarding your exploration. Its so annoying when every item is in a chest. It makes the world feel more real. Example: finding a random axe stuck to a tree makes you think about the unfortunate person collecting lumber and now is just gone into the rich tapestry of life. Their loss, your gain :D Varied enemies and biomes makes each part of the world stand out yet at the same time they all have the same essence and none of them feel out of place, at least to me. Another plus is the full voice acting. They all feel real people, it seems like lots of them are new or amateur voice actors and it brings... i dont know what to call it, except real Cant believe i somehow forgot to make a review of this, got back to into it with the randomizer mode added in the latest update and its kicking my ass. Fun and hard. Enemies packs a punch if they hit you which is nice, you cannot drift off. The only thing that could possibly be improved upon (this is a maybe) is a hard mode where enemies have more varied movement or set of attack or just plain faster in different aspects? Not sure if i like that an enemy/boss can be facetanked if you chug potions nonstop... but im unsure, it might throw the vibes of the game off, i dont know. It just might be my own playstyle that made me get so many potions on hand, i really love to go through and deeply explore everything and i got so many potions that as random drops. Ive learned that the NPCs stops selling potions if you have too many which is nice. I think if you have 10 on hand they dont sell anymore. Maybe they shouldnt be random drops if youre at 10 as well? Undecided. Anyways, 9.9/10. Id rate it just as good as Lunacid.
I wrote a negative review for this earlier on into the game, but in the spirit of fairness, and because many people genuinely seem to like it, I decided to push through my early frustrations to see if there really was a golden nugget in there by the end. So here's my new review having beaten the game. Verho is a complex nut to crack. At parts I found it truly inspired in its design, and there really are so many great little bits in there with interesting weapons, enemies, and areas to find your way through. At the same time it's rife with mechnical issues, weird glitches, and odd design choices that belie either an inexperienced or careless developer. Story: The story is, in my opinion, serviceable but trite. It has some twists and turns, a little bit of mystery, and an ultimate conclusion that I was able to fully predict by about the midpoint of the game and probably would have seen coming sooner had I talked to a certain NPC earlier on in my playthrough but totally forgot about him. That early prediction continuing to prove itself true honestly made me lose a lot of my interest in the story itself, and when it's backed by characters that are mostly just backstory dumps followed by minimal interaction or storylines as contrived as the overarching story it doesn't really do much for engagement on that front. The combat is almost really fun. The basic mechanics are all there, but I will say that this game begs for some kind of added movement. A dodge or a sprint ability, even if light, would have gone a long way, and I think that especially the bosses but many of the enemies as well were almost designed with the intent of having some kind of dodge mechanic in place that was never implemented. The weapons have a lot of interesting differences to them, which was fun to explore but there's absolutely no denying that there is a heavy meta on the swords as the best option for most encounters just because as cool as the spears and rapiers are they don't deal even close to enough damage to become viable in comparison. The middle of the game is where the most variety can be found, but through the beginning sections of the game and the final sections of the game it's just better to not even try. On that note, there's a lot of inconsistency in the value of each portion of the game. The very beginning is cool and fun, but by the first dungeon I found myself mostly corner peaking and edge dodging with a bow or crossbow because getting close to the enemies is just not very fun. Outside of the middle section of the game in which I found myself extremely overpowered and able to kill the best designed enemies in a couple hits (somewhat downplaying that they're the most fun to fight) about 75% of the enemies and boss fights are just DPS races and healing checks. Kill them before they exhaust your health pool because there's basically no use to even trying to dodge the AOE and teleportation spam. This is largely due to really weird hitboxes that extend way outside of their associated particle effects and hit tracking rom projectiles that really is just annoying a lot of the time. The final dungeon is the worst offender here and I found myself rushing my way through an overly confusing and obnoxiously long dungeon just to get to the final boss and finally finish my playthrough. Character building is very heavily focused on min-maxxing. If you want to be able to use any of the high level gear you have to pour all of your points into a focused few stats. There's supposedly damage scaling based on stats for weapons, but there was no feedback on that in the damage values and honestly I couldn't tell if having higher stats actually gave me any extra damage at all. So basically a pretty standard system that wasn't exactly implemented to the best of its ability. There's a lot that needs polished here as well, at least in my eyes. Glitches that cause you to fall through the ground and die, a very frustrating issue with offhand ranged weapons that made it so that in order to use them you have to use your melee weapon first for some reason, and the afore-mentioned problems with hitboxes, movement, and enemy design. Many of the boss fights could be really cool if the attack spam didn't turn them into bullethell DPS races. The UI looks completely unfinished, just flat out, and I'm surprised that it made the final cut. The resource economy is just really really bad to a level that digging into it would be a whole block of text by itself. Just in general the game doesn't feel finished. I've seen early access releases that feel more complete. To sum it all up, I would give Verho a 5/10, just as I did in my original review. All of my initial complaints remained through the entirety of my playthrough, but that's not to say I didn't enjoy myself by the end of it. I think the final section undermined that heavily, but overall the game is pretty okay and an equal mix of fun and frustrating to play. Sadly there are no neutral reviews on Steam, so based on my experience and the fact that I did have to push myself to try and complete the game rather than feeling drawn to do so I'm going to leave it as a negative recommendation on my part. But I hope the developer reads through reviews like this one and takes the criticism to heart. I do not think this is a bad game, or a bad dev, just a project that needed a lot more time in production than it got and a lot more critical playtesting to make it the great game it could've been.
This one really needs a "maybe" option. The first 75% of the game is great. The last 25% is a complete trainwreck. The game feels unfinished in its current form, everything after the castle obviously had less attention paid to it than everything else. EDIT: Changing this to a thumbs down based on the final boss, which is literally broken. You just die at random times during the fight without an attack even coming from the boss.
+Has actual combat mechanics +Good sense of exploration and mystery +Decent amount of voice acting and okay music -Magic was powerful and fun to use in the first and last 10% but painful and underpowered for the rest. All of the weapon enchanting/ hybrid playstyle spells legitimately had no use cases for my 2 runs. -Very little world reactivity -Can't use sword magic or block with a torch out, many other "conflicting" inputs (It feels like purposefully outdated design in a bad way)
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3792844324
NPC
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3792929012
The story (world and characters) are somewhat interesting, but the game is full of bugs, has issues with its combat such as pathing, hitboxes and collision glitches. The frustration caused by the gameplay makes the experience pretty weak overall, even with the narrative trying to carry the game ahead. It's pretty mediocre, grab it on sale, ideally in one of its many bundles if you REALLY enjoy King's Field & similar games.
I am once again wishing we had a neutral rather than binary yes/no for Steam Reviews. I feel bad giving a review so early into my playing of a game, however the more I stewed on my thoughts, the more I realised I just wasn't having fun. The below were my thoughts at 3.5 hours, and while I may pick Verho up again, I think the core take away for me was it was a poor man's moden King's Field; the more I play Verho, the more I feel its lacking a polish that Lunacid had. Sure, Verho has voice acting, and its pretty good voice acting, while Lunacid doesn't, but its missing a certain polish in the combat that Lunacid had. While Lunacid let you hold and build your attack, Verho expects a lot more perfect timing from you. Which means there is a greater skill ceiling than Lunacid ever could have. Combine this with weapons seeming to scale more in line with Dark Souls with some weapons scaling A in Strength and C in Dexterity, the combat feels a bit... I don't know the word to describe this right now, but not as enjoyable. Both have strafe attacking like that of King's Field, alongside adjusting where you're looking to ensure you hit but maybe it comes down to the enemies. I have tried the random mode - Oh my God, I am not ready! - so I have seen a variety of enemies outside of the starting areas I've visited on my main playthrough. Once you're outside the starting area, also while within the starting area for an optional boss, the enemies start doing weird things. One telegraphed move from one of the early bosses shows up in those random enemies I mentioned earlier where there is a windup, and then BOOM! Area of Attack on the ground. So you naturally would jump to avoid it, yeah? But that's the thing, the timing on it feels bad - like you jump when it lands (take damage), and you land a few seconds after the attack hits the ground (take damage) - almost like the timing window is buggy or incomplete. In fact, one of those randomised enemies I jumped up to high ground to avoid getting hit. It hit anyway. So I stayed on the ground - it stil hit. So I jumped. It didn't hit the first time, but the second time. Another gripe would be the environmental hazards or enemies like the bats and mites. They're meant to be mild inconveniences, but can inflict bleed on you. They also take 1/4th and 1/8th of your health in damage on the Crusader starting class respectively. And the way they move is not great. You must simultaneously back away and swing to hit them without being hit yourself for both. With the mites constantly hitting you in a forward march, only turning if they are hit (and only sometimes) and can lead to a death by a thousand tiny bites because the mite didn't run away, and you stil need to charge up your attack to be able to hit the enemy for more than 1-10 damage (normally 50 or more depending on your weapon). Meanwhile the bats do more damage and fly off, encouraging ranged attacks...or back stepping. Back to the environments...the reason I'm not feeling them is they're small, and have environmental damage that happens after I've been over the environment and taken no damage, with the first example being the poison swap where you can fetch a ring. The swamp moves up and down. I notice this, and wait to see what happens as I stand on a platform that moves gradually upward, completely engulfing the platform. Okay, cool, I've just learned that the environment is somewhat safe to stand on. Next time I do the exact same thing, instant death. Something similar happens in a lava cave. I jump across, can see I'm standing on the lava environment, I'm fine. I go to make a jump from one rock to the next and make it? You better believe that's instant death. In the Temple in the Secret Halls, there is a portal. I stand on it, once more nothing happens. I'm low on health, have a level to spend, and really want to try that greatsword in my inventory with 1 more stat in Strength before I can use it, so I take the path I took to get there and step over the portal and I can only assume this is what damaged me gradually because the area was completely annihilated of enemies earlier. So yeah, all my deaths have felt cheap, and not deserved. Music is not inspiring to be honest. Fitting, but not great; a Dark Souls tier soundtrack, which is to say...just a good soundtrack at best. If I come away not wanting to listen to it independently, and would not be able to enjoy the music outside the games environment, its not a great soundtrack in my opinion. Also, the main character grunts at everything, and its at least not the hyper sexual sounding male character from Dark Souls, but its not pleasant. I could turn it off, but then I wouldn't know that I'm taking damage from the environment for an unknown reason. I'll also touch back to the voices here; they are good, not great like a lot Verho - Curse of Faces is. But a good voice actor is so much better than a mediocre voice actor, even without proper direction. What I have heard sounds well directed and well paced, alongside properly mixed voices. I hope that the developers Kasur Games learn a lot from this game here because they're so close to having great voice actin. Another minor greivance is the awful head bob. You can't turn it off, even with the setting that allegedly turns off head bobbing. So if you're suseptible to motion sickness, do not come near this game. So where does that leave me? I don't know. Maybe I'll finish it at some point at a later date, or maybe I won't. Not really sure, because its got a lot more polish than KIng's Field (which I yearn for) but its stil not quite enough to reach that Lunacid itch. Like I feel like there should be more to explore; more secrets to find...and yet I'm coming up short. So yeah...we'll see. Who is this game for? Definitely recommending it if you like King's Field, Lunacid, Dark Souls, Demons Souls, Elden RIng, but also a buyer beware sort of situation. Same for those who enjoy metroidvanias like Hollow Knight, Blasphemous, Salt & Sanctuary as I strongly hold the belief that there is a lot in common with Dark Souls and Demons Souls ethos in a 3D environment games like Verho and these particular metroidvanias. I can easily see you enjoying this as a first time foray into this type of RPG. I'd also probably give a minor recommendation for those who enjoyed The Elder Scrolls games, Dread Delusion, and Kristala, as while Verho is much smaller in scale compared to those, the combat feels closer to those games, and also has the aesthetic charm of some of them (Morrowind and Dread Delusion in particular). Who is this game not for? If you don't like stiff combat ala The Elder Scrolls, or are not a fan of janky head bobbling, I'd absolutely stay away from the game. I'd also not recommend it for people who aren't fans of modern systems like deaths costing progress rather than being a semi-checkpoint system. Who is this a wild card game for? My wild card recommendation is Ultima Underworld and The Legend of Grimrock of all things, specifically for the atmosphere. They're not very similar in gameplay or aesthetics, but there was something about Verho that makes me think of these games in a good way. Closing Thoughts Verho - Curse of Faces is a game that captures some but not all of the things I'm looking for in a 3D dark fantasy game. It is a strong contender to scratch the itch for a modernised King's Field style of game, but unfortunately comes up lacking if you've placed other games in a similar vein more recently. Its not a bad game by any stretch of the imagination, but it is a bit lacking compared to others more recently released. Kasur Games did a good job with Verho - Curse of Faces, but its just that; a good game.
