Stonehearth (2025): Still Holding Onto Hope
It’s been ten years since Stonehearth officially launched in 2015, and its charm remains undeniable. This city-building, adventure, and sandbox creation game offered a cozy yet ambitious world for players to explore and shape. However, as we enter 2025, Stonehearth still feels like an unfinished dream—especially for long-time fans who hoped it would fully realize its potential.
The Good
1. Unique Art Style The voxel-based aesthetic remains as delightful as ever, combining the nostalgic simplicity of Minecraft with a touch of warmth and polish. The characters and environments are charming, and building structures feels as therapeutic as stacking toy blocks. 2. Freedom in Building and Creativity One of Stonehearth’s standout features is its highly customizable building system. Players can design anything from simple cottages to elaborate castles, and this creative freedom is still a core appeal. Thanks to the modding community, there’s also no shortage of new content to keep your imagination alive. 3. Modding Support The game continues to benefit from its dedicated modding community. From new races and creatures to more complex economic systems, mods help fill the gaps left by the original development team, offering fresh ways to experience the game.
The Bad
1. Abandoned Development In 2018, Radiant Entertainment announced the end of Stonehearth's development. Although the game reached a 1.0 release, many promised features were left unfinished. A deeper story mode, a more robust adventure system, and a fully fleshed-out multiplayer experience remain forever out of reach. For fans, this is a lingering disappointment. 2. Technical Issues By 2025, Stonehearth’s performance struggles feel outdated and frustrating. Building larger villages often results in severe lag and frequent crashes, making it difficult for players who want to immerse themselves in long-term projects. 3. No Updates or Official Support Since the development team moved on, Stonehearth has seen no official updates. While modders have done their best to keep the game alive, a stagnant ecosystem makes it hard for Stonehearth to compete with more modern sandbox and city-building games.
Final Thoughts and Hopes
Despite its flaws, Stonehearth is still a game worth exploring, especially for fans of city-building and creative sandbox experiences. It offers a unique, relaxing gameplay loop that allows players to craft their dream villages and watch them come to life. Yet, in 2025, I can’t help but hope for something more. Perhaps one day, we’ll see a spiritual successor or a sequel that fully realizes the potential of this wonderful concept. Whether it’s the original team returning or a new developer stepping in, Stonehearth’s vision deserves a second chance with modern tools and resources. For now, Stonehearth remains a bittersweet gem. If you’re looking for a cozy, creative experience, it’s still worth your time. But if you’re hoping for a complete and polished adventure, we’ll just have to keep holding onto hope.

14 on sale1 answered “not sold”0 we did not ask
The 1 “not sold” market is read from the Steam price pass of Sep 10: that day the store answered for this game elsewhere and gave no price there. The 14 priced markets are the same rows as the table above — each the latest price we hold, dated here when it is older than that pass. The 0 marked “not asked” were not put to this store at all — either it has no storefront there or we do not collect it yet, and neither is a statement about the game. A refusal is a refusal on one day; a store can list a title again tomorrow.

The game HAD massive potential but the devs abandoned it in a half finished state, it will break down eventually and you won't be able to continue your world. Do not buy this game, it is sadly dead.
Loved this game, played enough to say if you have 20$ to burn check it out. Developers got purchased and dissolved and the game was abandoned. They only came back to fulfill their fund raising promises. The game is set up in a way that it will become slower and slower the longer you play a save so fair warning. (Effect is compounded in co-op) You can check out the community mods I believe the the devs gave a group their blessing to keep updating the game but I'm not sure if that's continued. I'm sure its in IP purgatory which is a real shame. I enjoyed the journey way back when but I can't in good faith recommend this game. Rip Radiant/Stonehearth thanks for the many hours of entertainment.
What a tragedy. This game hit the perfect level of micromanagement for a colony sim, where you can design and give detailed orders without getting bogged down in assigning them to individuals yet still watch everyone go about their business. The fact this is still being sold for money, despite being completely abandoned for years is absolutely offensive. Complete corporate greed that they're continuing to make money off of the free labor of modders instead of doing the right thing and open sourcing the engine so the horrific performance problems and engine bugs can be fixed.
This game WAS amazing and had mountains of potential. Sadly the devs got purchased and then their resources taken from them. After the windows 10 update the game no longer opens. You'll press play and it will load for about 30 seconds before closing. If you bought this game recently then my apologies but just return it as you've been scammed. The game isn't playable and is just another memorial to why we shouldn't kill games. RIP Stone Hearth you could've been so much. If you wanna witness this games glory days then I'd advise watching some Youtube videos of it. Sadly that is the only way to witness a stable version of this game now.
RIOT Games once again proving they're insufferable creatures with no humanity within them for buying and dissolving this studio. They killed a game with such great potential with no remorse and should honestly face legal retribution for such an act. The game itself is great, but you'll need community mods to play it fully.
小时候看up玩的石炉,当时和别人说别人都以为是炉石,在网上搜也是只有炉石,但我坚定的跟他们说就是石炉,当时没有电脑,现在也算给小时候的自己一个交代。
Game was never actually finished. To this day basic bugs like hearthlings failing to complete buildings for no reason (every piece is in storage, they just never place the last piece) exist. It's a shame, since the building construction system is really promising. This game ought to be a cozy village builder, it just never made it across the finish line.
Game was abandoned and is a classic example of the risks of supporting Kickstarter and Early Access projects. There is no penalty for severely over promising and under delivering despite a great deal of funding support. This game needs mods to play.
A Heartbreak of a Game
I remember watching devlogs for this game all the way back when it was in active developement, and I still adore the voxel-based artstyle and all the immersive charm, personality, and creativity in the story and gameplay. Unfortunately, the studio was aquired and dissolved by Riot Games years ago, and this "full release" is buggy, incredibly unoptimized, and painfully filled with potential that will never receive the work it should have. Despite this, I still love Stonehearth. It's adorable, it's fun, and the modding community has picked up where the developement left off. Given the state of the game, modding will require much better hardware than the base game, but if you have the game, or you can get it for cheap, give it a try! Maybe you'll have enough fun building your little city and decorating homes that you'll stop being angry at the larger games industry, but no promises.
