About

In Starbound, you create your own story - there’s no wrong way to play! You may choose to save the universe from the forces that destroyed your home, uncovering greater galactic mysteries in the process, or you may wish to forego a heroic journey entirely in favor of colonizing uncharted planets.

It was a great game in the past, had so much ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ potential and they abandoned it. Really a shame :(

For scale, across Steam · Top Sellers · Brazil over the last 30 days: the 26 chart moves that followed a price cut of more than 20% went a median of 7 places towards #1, and the 2,402 moves with no price cut behind them went 2 away. One store, one chart, one country — it is the only place we have enough observations to say even that.
Prices outside the United States have been collected since 6 August 2026 and chart positions since 19 July 2026, so a cut older than that has no market to compare and a market that joined later has no history yet. Nothing here is converted between currencies.

I have mixed feelings about this game nowadays. I've grown up loving it, and still do have fun with it. Though, as I grow older, I come to realize the game's flaws (and they're pretty hard to ignore nowadays). The story is a heavily missed opportunity, the game could've been so much more impactful with a better story. Also, exploring the surface is usually a lot more fun and tends to give enough loot over the long run to make mining less important. There's also some features stuck into the game with no real reason to pay attention to them, such as fishing and fossil-collecting. While you can keep playing after the final boss, there's very little to motivate you to do so apart from the bounty hunter update tossed into the mix in update 1.4 (in my opinion, of course). That's all without addressing the major elephant in the room, of course. The thing that some people reading this review have been waiting for me to include. The fact that this game was built largely on unpaid labor is heartbreaking to me, and I couldn't really look at the game the same way again afterwards. However, since I put "recommended" in my review, you may be asking why given all the negative points I just listed. Because there are still a lot of good things about this game, that I think provide a pretty fun experience for at least 1 playthrough. Curtis's soundtrack is amazing, and in my opinion the game would've been forgotten way quicker if it weren't for the music (and it also could've gotten boring way faster). I love the variation in planets, biomes, villages, races, spacecrafts, overall just the diversity in life and cultures offered in the game. This isn't to say there's no room for improvement of course, but I would still consider it one of the game's strengths. I also like the variation in weapons and the dungeons (even though you can definitely see less effort put into the later dungeons of the main story). Overall, I would recommend this game for a fun survival-exploration experience, but I wouldn't recommend supporting the people who're responsible for the flaws and unfortunate development history of this game (a lot of which seems to come down to Finn Brice). Modding can help in some ways, but unfortunately it seems like toxicity is present in a lot of the modding community as well.
Just go play Terraria, this is awful
genuinely the only reason this game is relevant at all is nsfw slop
Starbound is a game with massive potential that was unfortunately abandoned by its developers when it still desperately needed work. Vanilla game quickly becomes repetitive and empty. The only reason it's still playable is the dedicated modding community, who essentially had to finish the developers' work for them. I cannot recommend this abandoned project unless you plan to rely entirely on mods.
the devs are ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ so dont buy this unless if youre willing to ignore that and get Moddingggg!
