Doesn't get updated much, but Maxim Karpendo puts love into every update. They could have called it quits years ago, but the content and systems keep rolling out with more advancements than I can even think of.
I thought you were a god. I expected you to know everything."
The main draw of this game, the civilization simulation, is extremely barebones. Each update seems to be aimed at making everything in the game look more detailed and complicated, while actually changing pretty much nothing. The most recent major update as of writing this review added cultures, religions, clans, and customizable species, and yet countries still pretty much just go to war with anyone they think they can beat, walk in a straight line to that country, and capture their territory. There are no military buildings, fortifications, or emplacements, and armies are comprised of simply dudes who melee and dudes who shoot. There are only 4 types of buildings that every species and country in the entire game can build, which are town halls, houses, docks, and farms. They all function identically for every race and nation, so a race of sentient butterflies you designed will build the same buildings as a race of giant rhino people. A country will build farms, which can only be used to farm wheat, even when their population is 100% incapable of eating grain. Also, the max world size is really small, and stats can't be edited directly, instead almost exclusively through traits that come packaged with other stats you may not want. So if you want to give a species an infinite lifespan, your options are to jury-rig a really long lifespan, or to give them the immortal trait, which comes with a massive loyalty penalty that can't be recouped in full by other traits, and will cause their cities to rebel constantly.
This game is a great game. You can mess around and nuke worlds or you can try to start a civilization.
