Availability
We put this game to every storefront we collect. A market that answered not sold has told us something about the game; a market we never asked has not, and the two are never drawn the same.
Discounts
Every price cut of more than 20% we have observed, in each market that quoted one, with this game's chart position on either side of it. These are episodes, not a model: a sale is one event, and one event cannot tell you what the next one will do.

I haven't played the original but I'm mostly left with the impression this is a really good remake of a really average JRPG. Regarding the remake itself: The updated graphics are the now common "HD-2D" style but unlike e.g. octopath traveller they do this just by putting character sprites in normal 3D environments without any low res pseudo 16-bit environment textures or abuse of post processing. It all looks pretty tasteful and coherent, and runs smoothly on steam deck (save for negligible hitching on the world map). The new sound work is commendable but I opted for the original soundtrack and voice work. The former is just my personal preference as I like synthesized video game music over orchestra work. But for the voices it's hard to overlook that many of the actors from the Second Evolution remake have just aged out of their roles and sound out of place. A little depressing. The actual game: Combat is real time with pause, similar to Tales of Phantasia from the same era. On Universe difficulty, battles generally all play out the same by alternating regular attacks, crowd control or shield breaking skills, and recovery items while my allies spam magic spells automatically. The only battles I can remember involving tailored strategies were boss fights where I equipped status or attribute blocking gear before diving into the usual button mashing and healing. Probably more than any fifth gen JRPG I've played, the gameplay seems really heavily weighted toward min maxing and messing around in menus outside of battle. There are literally dozens of passive and active battle skills, and crafting skills. Crafting will get you a basically limitless reserve of overpowered recovery items that are only limited by your carrying capacity, as well as most of the strongest weapons. The most lasting memory I have from playing this is standing around in item shops duplicating items and re-rolling weapon customizations. All the complexity in the game's leveling and crafting was apparently carried over from the original from what I've read. It's shockingly modern, but all the design work behind it would have been better spent developing more on the actual battle system. The story is standard JRPG fare. The pacing is bad. It does a pretty typical JRPG thing in the beginning of giving you a singular goal (go from point A to point B and investigate the horrible apocalyptic monster spewing evil relic) and then diverting you on a world tour for 30 hours through bad luck and circumstance while you go everywhere except where you're meant to be, while the plot goes nowhere. Others have pointed it out but Claude and Rena are the only real meaningful protagonists, as every other character is swapable for someone else. They're both pretty plain. All the other characters have their own introductory segment and then disappear into the background, just tossing in throwaway lines once in a while. I was hopeful the light sci-fi elements would shine through better but throughout the game (even in the end parts) the setting outwardly seems like the average fantasy backdrop with a touch of modern technology, while at the other extreme, all of the game's crazy doomsday devices and high technology are so unexplained and miraculously powerful it's all basically magic. Weirdly then, even with background references to space travel and clashes of interplanetary civilizations it's all for naught as it all somehow seems to end up at a pretty typical fantasy setting and story. In terms of themes or atmosphere or plot devices, this really is just another JRPG. I guess in total this left no real impact on me and the time I spent playing it feels like an empty void.

14 of 15 markets; the rest we haven't asked for this title, not markets where it is unavailable.
14 on sale1 answered “not sold”0 we did not ask
The 1 “not sold” market is read from the Steam price pass of Sep 1: that day the store answered for this game elsewhere and gave no price there. The 14 priced markets are the same rows as the table above — each the latest price we hold, dated here when it is older than that pass. The 0 marked “not asked” were not put to this store at all — either it has no storefront there or we do not collect it yet, and neither is a statement about the game. A refusal is a refusal on one day; a store can list a title again tomorrow.
Reviews, worldwide (the counter carries no country): 0.78/day in the week to Aug 4 → 1.14/day in the week after.
For scale, across Steam · Top Sellers · Brazil over the last 30 days: the 26 chart moves that followed a price cut of more than 20% went a median of 7 places towards #1, and the 2,402 moves with no price cut behind them went 2 away. One store, one chart, one country — it is the only place we have enough observations to say even that.
Prices outside the United States have been collected since 6 August 2026 and chart positions since 19 July 2026, so a cut older than that has no market to compare and a market that joined later has no history yet. Nothing here is converted between currencies.

Very boring and overrated. People gassed up this game so much over the years but the story is just awful, voice acting amateurish and character aside from the main duo protagonists might as well not exist.
There is nothing I can say that hasn't been said already. This is absolutely, without a doubt, the greatest JRPG ever made, and this version may not have been the only way to bring this masterclass of epic gaming history into a modern gaming era, but I firmly believe that this is the best version we could ever see. I remember playing this game from ages like 7-12, I personally never beat the game ( stfu I was young and didn't understand a lot of things) but I had an older brother who I could sit and watch for hours while he would break down what was happening into terms and situations I would understand. He would have me do his level grinding and he would teach me the systems so eventually I could play it on my own. Well, time went on and I grew up never having played the game all the way through myself. That changed with this release, and once again my big brother is the reason I get to experience what I would die defending as the GOAT JRPG. TLDR; This game is truly remarkable - but if you've never played it, a lot of the hype comes from nostalgia as this game was millions of parsecs ahead of it's time in the 1900's. The team behind this release did an incredible job modernizing this cult classic, and I personally believe it's worth every penny and more.
This is how truly a remake of an old school JRPG should be done this was an absolutely incredible remake of one of the greatest action JRPGs ever made. 10/10 I absolutely loved this game.
Star Ocean The Second Story R is a great example of how to remake or remaster a classic game. It has gorgeous pixel graphics that maintain the style of the original, but elevate it. I would say that this is the best game in the series, followed by the first game, and (probably controversially) Star Ocean The Last Hope. I know some people really like Till the End of Time, and I've only spent a small bit with that particular game. Nonetheless, this is a fantastic game. I wouldn't rate it higher than some of the absolute juggernauts of the genre, but it's perfectly fair for anyone to put this at the top of their list. The remastered soundtrack is great, and Motoi Sakuraba himself returned to rearrange it. The upgraded character illustrations are also another beautiful touch. There are quite a few QOL upgrades added that make playing the game less of a grind than the original release. Quick travel is very much appreciated, as are no random encounters. While I come from the era of random battles, that is one piece of JRPGs that should stay in the past. That isn't to say I won't play a game that has them, it just makes the experience much more enjoyable when you can choose to engage or not. It shows respect for your time. Between the Dragon Quest remakes/Octopath Traveler and Star Ocean 2, I very much would like to see a faithful remaster/remake of Chrono Trigger in the HD 2D style. Just do the game as it was, with the stunning pixel art and lighting of these games and it would be perfect.

Combat didn’t click with me at all. It’s alright on the most basic level, but your PC controlled party is absolutely dumb, so you have to micromanage their every move, or you risk getting wiped out. Battles are either way too easy or too hard, there is no middle ground. I can see why people like the game, just not my cup of tea I guess.
一部の敵が嫌がらせみたいな難易度だし、キャラクター全員同時に仲間にできないのが不満だけど、それ以外は結構おもしろい。
