endless hours of fun!
This game still holds up so well. If you are a fan of sci-fi and civ-like game play. I highly encourage you to try it. Don't let the 2024 steam release date fool you, this is over 20 years old.

One of the greatest games of all time, a true gem.
¿Y qué iba a pasar si no?
Alien crossfire constantly crashes
The game brings back memories. Games just don't have the same depth anymore.
Literally the best turn-based strategy game ever made. I can't stand any other compared to this one. Start playing it at 8:30pm and you won't even think to check your watch until it's 5:30am. Trying to improve on SMAC is like trying to improve chess. It can't be done.
Why is this so addictive, still?? This game just sucks me right in. One of the best ever.
This game is a trip. The cinematics alone are a capsule of art. One of the most intelligent games of all time - if not the most intelligent. The concepts the game present are wild but reasonable. Something very few works of fictions achieve. Hard scifi that actually works and is also emotionally relatable. Even space Christians make sense in a bleak world where humanity is on the brink of being erased by technology and a hostile world. Everything about the game is a wild but a well reasoned trip. Especially the cinematics, which are perhaps the best in any game, really build the atmosphere. The voiceovers are divine. It presents humanity in a very interesting way. One of the few games where most character appear genuine and well crafted. The way the game reveals the nature of the planet is unbelievable. Writers could really learn from this game but on the other hand it represents the 90's where there was still room for debt and ingenuity in games. An era of peak creativity that is long gone. Time has not been not so kind on the visuals (minus the amazing cinematics and beautifully nostalgic 3D renderings) and especially the user interface. The music was never the showcase. The gameplay is deeply strategic, not only on-par but beyond that of Civilization. Hard to get into in this day but only more rewarding if you learn it. Not for the impatient nor the dumb. You can tweak individual unit parts or terraform a planet. The scale is amazingly wide. A bit dated but still a masterpiece in storytelling and in intellectual scifi. The cinematics alone make this a work of art.
