I can't code for nothin, but RPG Maker MV has been a godsend in my dreams of making video games. The approach is incredibly artist-friendly, with visual scripting making everything ten times easier, and plugins making everything ten times better. I've spent almost two thousand total hours playing with this engine, and I'd spend two thousand more.
I've put about 25 hours into this rpg maker since getting it and I quite like it. I knew next to nothing before getting it, but I've looked some things up online and leaned that way. Most things are pretty straight forward, but some things are trial and error. I do wish you could add in/out tiles without it replacing things, but I know rpg makers have their limitations.

For scale, across Steam · Top Sellers · Brazil over the last 30 days: the 23 chart moves that followed a price cut of more than 20% went a median of 14 places towards #1, and the 2,420 moves with no price cut behind them went 2 away. One store, one chart, one country — it is the only place we have enough observations to say even that.
Prices outside the United States have been collected since 6 August 2026 and chart positions since 19 July 2026, so a cut older than that has no market to compare and a market that joined later has no history yet. Nothing here is converted between currencies.

Very great and effective software, my only (but big) piece of criticism is being that you can't make a game with your own original assets in-game. Im really upset that there isn't an in-game tool to make your own sprites, like GameMaker. But, still a very great software, and I cannot wait to make more with it.

RPG Maker MV is an interesting bag: On the one side, it is still a pretty viable to use engine. The underlying base can be updated with some knowledge to be more performant, and its old-school plugin environment gives the user quick access to expand on the base options their game would provide. It is also the first engine which did a fairly noticeable jump to modernize some aspects, of which a few still hold up today compared to earlier titles, while retaining most of the functionality and easy-to-use interface the tool is known for. On the other hand, this is the first entry in the franchise to feature less polish and stability up until development ceased, a lot of the event blocks it provides are needing a long overdue refresh in terms of available options and quality of life, and the modernization it offered was half-baked and was mostly already outdated the time it was released. What makes matters even more confusing is its successor - RPG Maker MZ, which was mostly an "Ace" version of MV when it released, but has become a solid "2.0", dropping in price with future sales, to a point where it becomes less and less sensible to even recommend MV over it, if not for the plugins. There simply are - to this day - plugins that have not been recreated in the same style or mindset as back in the MV era, simply because with MZ a lot has changed. By now, you will find solid replacements for most of them, but you have to compare if they are still free of charge, can be edited, and are truly giving you the exact same thing you are used to by older engines' plugin/scripting communities. For some, this will be nostalgia, for others it will be the important part of making the decision which engine to purchase. In summary: MV is still mostly on par with what its successor MZ can offer. It is missing a few new features and quality of life additions comparatively, and it has a lower maximum when trying to bump its underlying framework and codebase. Based on the time passed since both have released however, and their sale prices getting closer to each other every year, it is hard to recommend this software other than for the different plugin environment. If you do not care about that, or are open to how things are for MZ, I do not see much of a reason to get MV at this point. If you end up with it however, rest assured that you are not missing out on too much, and are still holding a solid piece of software, which still manages to enable an easy process with a lot of possibilities to create your game.
