Rogue Legacy

Own the GOG version too, put many hours in. got this in the Humble Bundle so here's my two cents: Rogue Legacy is pretty good, always like it, but really? that first one has situations where you can walk into a fresh castle and in first room be overwhelmed with enemies, or ridiculous platforms and other cheapo stuff! Its Castlevania one without the whip, add random generation. the randomness of the game just doesn't synergize well in so many areas and the skill tree is a slog with mostly "Raise ATK, Raise HP" Rogue Legacy does have one of the best character trait systems in a rogue like and smooth retro combat so dont get me wrong, i love Rogue Legacy, just dont know if i should spend more time on it. i think im doing well and poof dead. Rogue Legacy still deserves a good chance and playthrough. i play so many rogue-likes that this one ends up feeling cheap and random in so many situations but still holds a soft spot being one of the ealier Rogue-likes in the boom that happened now over a decade ago, but one of the few that managed to do it well. -me at any given moment in Rogue Legacy - "what! how!? man ♥♥♥♥ this game! im gonna go on one more run then im uninstalling this thing i swear!!" -ad nauseam

It's a little archaic by today's standards, but it's still fun and really brings me back to that early-ish "XBLA" indie game scene. The sequel also massively improves on it.

Played a lot of this on and off of Steam and it really does combine the best of 2D platforming and the run-based roguelite subgenres. I also played hundreds of runs of Spelunky and Spelunky Classic so there ya go.

You collect runes, gear, and coins. Well until you die. Then you repeat with a new character. Oh did I mention they have quirks or issues. They range from ADHD to afraid of chickens. Each one changes the run of the game. I would recommend this game, especially if you like the challenge. This game is steam deck friendly.
