If you havent played it, play it! Its an absolute classic. This version from 2002 is a little bit wonky on todays hardware, it is what it is, but its totally playable on a modern machine running windows 10 without hassle. just accept its a 4:3 screen ratio and dont forget to dial in the mouse speed and maybe limit the frame rate to 120 or 160fps. then its a blast, controls are snappy like in the old days. some games didnt age as well and suffer from insane input issues, this isnt one of them. Hard difficulty is exactly that. some encounters are very very tough and sometimes require some... creativity. if you want to enjoy this classic, maybe go medium difficulty. if you want to struggle through it, treat yourself with the hard difficulty and dont forget to save. frequently. alot. search for secrets in the maps, soak in the atmosphere and i also recommend listening to enemy chatter and reading the notes scattered around the maps, always worth a read. now a word of caution. there are a few bugs. some maps (for example first stealth mission) can crash the game on load from within the game under certain circumstances (like custom or high resolution). to reload a savegame after a failed attempt you have to exit to the main menu and load your game from there. i have only encountered this issue in two maps in the whole campaign. being an old game, it loads very fast, not a big issue. and that exact stealth mission can softlock. you must not kill the last guard to be able to complete the mission, but this guard can be in perma-alerted state if you happen to kill another guard in vision range (guard on water tower), which makes the mission impossible to complete. make sure the last guard cannot see the corpse, e.g. sniping the watertower-guard, when he is on the left of the watertower (when looking at the base from the front). the last guard is to the right of the water tower. also, use multiple savegames for this mission as triggering the alarm has some lead time, you might brick your savegame with a failed attempt you didnt know you failed.
