About

"Beyond the great plains and mountains, deep inside the forbidden lands, lies a dormant kingdom, untouched in centuries. Those who enter the vast ranges of its terrible curse, will forever drift along its unknowable, shifting paths. Running from horrible creatures, hiding in crumbling ruins, watching for lights on the mountain during starry nights."
After months of travel across windswept plains, mossy forests, and barren mountains the ancient city appears far on the horizon, its broken towers rising from the haze. On a steep pass you see the cursed land below, its features moving and winding like giant snakes beneath the fog. The fisherman told tales of those who vanished in the Barrier and of the horrible visions it gave. At dawn you set out across a placid lake, in search for the hidden entrance to the Barrier.

"That narrow, broken path through the trees there. Snakes all the way deep into the kingdom." The old man looks at you. "Rubble and curses are all that's left there. Some other went there long ago. Looked just like you. Best you find something else." He grows silent, his eyes fixed beyond the trees.

Reviews
The core of the game is strong, well polished, and engaging. I like that it's really pared down without superfluous visual or UI elements. The introductory writing and the audio ambience really set the atmosphere, and the simple graphics leave room for the player's imagination, which is somewhat of a lost art I think. The game is a unique take on a classic genre and is oozing with potential. Excited to see this game develop and hope to see more people playing and engaging on reddit/twitch etc. update: 3+ hours in now and find the game super engaging. Still struggling to gain a win, but eager to try again and play better each time I die. Love the simple controls and UI. Super easy to hop into and get immersed straight away. update: 10+ hours now. The game has had lots of thoughtful changes and content added with more yet more gamechanging features in the works. Balance and gameplay is improved which is the most important factor for me! Got my first win today. I feel like it'll always be a challenge to win, and every run is different so the game has endless replay value. you have to be cautious in every encounter and manage your resources well, really simple to get into, but also very engaging. Drop by on the development streams (almost every day at the minute) on Twitch! It's all made in C with OpenGL.

Rangedrifter is stunningly atmospheric. The parallaxed tiles create a beautiful visual experience, and the ambient audio is surprisingly immersive. Once you learn to read the environment the gameplay begins to flow.
If you like He is Coming, you might like this game, if you like Caves of Qud you need therapy and you will like this game. I love this game, but I think it hates me and wants to cause me harm.
I found out about the developer's YouTube channel a day before the early access release and, as a sucker for roguelikes, I cannot refrain from trying Rangedrifter. If nothing else, the 3D setting alone turns a beautiful ASCII-filled window into an even more vivid and lively world. The music adds a mysterious layer to the experience. While I haven't discovered much of this world in the short span I spent in-game, it was easy to get started, a fun experience, and not overwhelming for those who might be unfamiliar with the gnre. I will surely play more. Hopefully the developer might create a Discord server, etc., so that we can interact with them on the game's journey to full release.
Traditional roguelikes fascinate me. This one fascinates² me.
I am loving it! From the screenshots and videos, it seemed like it was gonna be difficult to read the world. But it's surprisingly very readable and pleasant on the eyes. I've only scratched the surface but I wanted leave a review so Rangedrifter gets more attention. I'm excited to see where this one goes!
I just started, but I can already say this is a very fun game. I like the simplicity of UI and controls. Music is great. Most of all I like the atmosphere of adventure. The 3D nature of the game is both beautiful and is used well to make the exploration more interesting. The rain effect is so cool. I usually don't play early access games, but I had to try this one. Also, the introductory text is everything to me. It sets up the game perfectly. It makes me care about the adventure. It makes me want to do the adventure. Chef's kiss. At a glance, I didn't quite understand where the randomness comes from given the handcrafted nature of the world, but this forum post explains it well: https://steamcommunity.com/app/4595710/discussions/0/833873371400807596/
very simple controls for a traditional roguelike, you only need 4 fingers on arrows and 4 fingers for actions. The world looks minimalistic, but there are enough details for you to sometimes miss something, so while exploring you need to look out for secret entrances and items. You can pull / push boulders, and it is possible to push a boulder onto enemy to crush them
It is a rougelike stripped down to be playable on a gamepad! You will die... a lot... often... it is ok. Not played enough to know if it is entirely proceedural yet but I seem to remember the dev streaming and editing layouts so it could be a mix or static. I get lost either way. I will recomend this game only if you want to play a stripped down roguelike. It may get more complex later on (in game or development) but at the moment it is vary bare, which makes it more than a little mysterious. There is no wiki yet, there is no apparent guide, you have too feel your way through it. So far, good times. TIPS: Get food. Learn what spike traps look like. Bolders make great weapons. Get food. I will put more here after I figure out what I am doing.
