A stylish and incredibly charming musical RPG. The combat and puzzles are satisfying, but the soundtrack and full-blown Disney-esque musical numbers are definitely the highlight. The story is a little simple, and definitely cheesy at times, but that feels like the vibe they were going for. It definitely has a lot of charm, a good sense of humour, and a great cast. The characters are a lot of fun, with a fantastic voice cast, and they keep you invested. The story itself ends on a really strong note, with the final boss in particular doing something special that I felt really highlighted the major themes of the game. The combat can be a little tricky to get your head around at first, but it's got some good depth to it, and allows for a surprising amount of freedom in how you build your characters. I'd compare it to something like Clair Obscur, where you can heavily customise characters moves, and swap them out for new ones entirely, to make powerful combos. It's not quite as deep as that system, but there are a lot of similarities and interesting builds you can go for. It's honestly a little surprising that there isn't a perfect block system, considering the emphasis on timing and rhythm. As mentioned, the music is definitely the highlight. Every nation you visit is inspired by a different genre, like EDM and Rock, and all the tracks reflect that. Music is very much the heart of this game, and it's packed full of clever references, jokes, and writing that shows how much the creators love and understand the importance of music. Even the credits are stylish and musical, it's so much fun all the way through. There are a ton of memorable tracks in a variety of genres. I especially loved the boss battle themes, the musical numbers, and the polka song that plays when you find a "Weird Owl", a sidequest/minigame that has you answering trivia. On that note, the enemy designs in general are all fantastic. Very music/pun inspired, like Killer Queen Bees that attack with "Bite the Dust". They gave me Dragon Quest vibes with how well designed and animated they were, which is a pretty high bar to meet. Some of the puzzles did border on frustrating for me, but the accessibility settings are great. If you're having trouble with the puzzles, you can skip them entirely, with no downside. You can also turn off the rhythm timings and lower difficulty of combat, or turn it off entirely, if you'd like. Overall, a very solid RPG, elevated at every level by the absolutely stellar soundtrack and creativity.

Fundamentally a solid RPG experience but the developers (which pains me to say as the game is fundamentally good in terms of RPG elements) took an otherwise solid story and then hid a lot of problematic content about 6ish hours into the game or so (probably could speed run to the place in under 3) which then makes it ineligible for a refund. When taken to the discussion, and no community guidelines were broken in the posting of what I posted, the developers took it upon themselves to ban me for stating that hiding a "non-binary" character deep enough into their game so that people cannot get a refund then they do not want to deal with such issues could be problematic for their studios later on. Now knowing who these developers cater towards (I mean they hired Erika Ishi and that should have been a red flag if I knew she was in it), I know this review will more than likely fall on deaf ears but for those that still have some sanity to them and thought this would be a unique RPG experience, just be prepared for a plethora of far left ideology after the first few hours. It may not seem Sweet Baby Inc was involved with this game, but I feel the bait and switch of having no real political leanings and then shoehorning in a non-binary character for literally no reason and then banning for criticizing such from the forum is in very poor taste and I assume this will hurt the company in future endeavors. Oh well.

This hidden gem of a game is not getting the attention it deserves. I can't understand how it has flown under the radar. It is a fun and whimsical romp through a beautiful world filled with fun characters, great music and a very satisfying battle system. I can't recommend it enough. The colorful world and aesthetically pleasing 3d art style really pops! I had a wonderful time exploring the various themed areas and towns. Each having unique battle music and dungeons themes with puzzles and combat made for a great change of pace and the pacing itself was fantastic. The game isn't trying to artificially pad its length. The short and sweet dungeons kept the game moving forward with a nice tempo. The characters are all fun with memorable little arcs. Vox could have had a bit more time to cook but Fret and Synthia had great stories to play through. The side characters like Cerrin and Smolder were just as entertaining if not more so than the main cast. The villains are great as well, Sharp is comically diabolical and ridiculous and the villain I hesitate to name (even if somewhat obvious) had great characterization. The music in battle is excellent. It helps carry each area with the battle themes. The full breakout music videos can be a bit hit or miss. Some were earworms or did a good job at moving the plot forward (Sorry Girl is amazing). Some could have been a bit better but they are again great for pacing and entertaining throughout. The battle system is incredible. Turn based Jrpgs are tried and true but this one had so much fun decision making and combos with the songstones and stanzas. The stanza themes and modifiers allow a lot of freedom and creative approaches to combat. I was enjoying setting up combos and countering the enemy for my entire playthrough. It has some issues but they really don't tread on the overall package. Not every song will hit for everyone. Backtracking could be a little better. The backtracking can be a bit much at the end. The UI and systems are all very modern and convenient except for one very silly minor gripe that the devs can probably hotfix. When you get equipment it asks you if you want to equip it. Great! However you don't know if it is good for your build yet. When you get into the menu to equip it from that prompt, you cannot back out without putting it on. There were times where I wanted to check it out, but then didn't want to use it so I had to put it on, exit, open the menu again, take it off. Please hot fix that haha. The game is simple. It is linear and somewhat predictable but its funny and genuinely enjoyable throughout. I love persona to death but I am a bit tired of anime teens fighting god being the only style of game for this genre. This chick wants to win fantasy American Idol. Fantastic. I found the simplicity to be a strength as it was simple and full of clichés but also full of vigor and spins on the formula. The references alone are worth entry. A certain owl had me grinning ear to ear and I couldn't shut up about the cool Lasso part that I won't spoil. I jumped on here to say though that the world needs more games filled with this level of clear love for the genre. It isn't for everyone, but if you love music, jrpgs or just think any of the above looks like a fun time - it is! Try it out!
The game hit me surprised, saw only one trailer, got me interested and now after i finished it... Why i never heard someone talk about it?! It has everything a RPG needs to have: Interesting story, Great characters, Great battle system and the music is just on point <3. Highly Recommend it! And i hope there will be a part 2 :D
This was a really interesting and fun game. It's turn based based RPG, but it mixes things up by adding in times attacks and turns that match your different part members' style, giving them a boost. There's several puzzles and puzzle battles that make things even more interesting. The story is very much another power of friendship tale, but not too bad. The real star of the show here is the art. The visuals, voice acting, and of course: the music. It's a freakin' musical and I am all for it. It is very much a art game more than anything and it looks and sounds amazing. This is one of the better RPGs I've played in a while and it was just a game having fun with being a game and a musical. Loved it.
Glad I found this game considering Before the Echo is probably a game I think about far too frequently even after all these years for being an actual rpg with music elements ingrained even in its combat. So what about People of Note? Ehhhhhhh. It was good but I have a hard time saying it was great. The JRPG combat is a bit generic as its just another timing based attack system which isn't exactly unique among JRPG games. While the mechanics around it such as stanzas, mashups, etc are music themed they aren't exactly musically exclusive as you could name them anything for any game and just make elements change between turns. I am glad there was a lot of effort to flavor it musically though. The enemies are pretty diverse in what they can do and what you have to look out for in their specific special moves, most of them having 2 special attacks. So good variety and fun designs. The mashup mechanic I wasn't really a fan of due to how it interacts with the current effects of the turn. You passively only generate mash bar when getting hit. Which means that if the enemies target one person a ton you wont get mash on the other characters to actually use it. Which it feels like they tried to reduce by just having a lot of bosses have AOE. Also meaning the single taunt move in the game is pretty pointless, doubly so when it felt like it hardly forced enemies to attack that target at all. Which made specifically the rebound damage ability also useless because you can't get enemies to consistently target someone and it wasn't even strong to begin with. The stanza changes also lead to a bit of an annoying loop. You might have a primary attacker you really want to hit but their time just wont come up so you have to hop they end up getting mash along with someone else. Not generally a fan of how out of your hands it made some of the combat, especially before you get the abilities to force mash generation. The important part for a musical rpg, what about the music. The combat tracks are really good as are the remixes for each genre. What isn't great is basically all the feature songs. I'm sure its meant to sound a bit generic, but being intentionally generic is still being generic. The only ones I really liked and listened to a few times were Mirror Image and Imposter. Sage's Past feels extra weak as the story is told through text. Which makes it hard to divide a bunch of attention between reading, the visuals and the music, its just not a good way to do a lore dump song. We also don't get a full rock song as its divided into a Mashup. Which is fine but a little disappointing. Character designs were pretty good. I also liked each character and felt like we got a generally good vibe for them over the story. Level design was...rough. The game is mostly just set piece towns, puzzles, and combat. I hate puzzles. I don't generally feel accomplished doing them, especially like the later part of this game where you already know the answer but it takes a few minutes to walk through the steps to get there (particularly the hammer and tone puzzles). I think the Range map was also particularly annoying as coming back to it you have to basically undo and redo a few steps of each puzzle, rather than just teleporting up to the top or the solution leaving everything open. This is also replicated in most maps where they have an "entrance" area which looks nice seeing it the first time. But if I'm just going to a shop I don't want to have to walk all the way through the entry area again, or a second time just to leave. Overall the game is good. Its just a bit disappointing in the execution and really lacks the interest in most of the main songs. Also clearly lacking in any real marketing or promotion. Maybe its my algorithms but I only saw this game because I was wondering "what is the studio who made before the echo up to these days" and I just happened to check a few months after this came out. I'm glad I played the game despite my disappointment and I hope it does well enough for you guys to give it another shot with the experience from this game.
Such a beautiful and fun game. It surprised me in the best possible way. You can tell that a lot of passion was put into it. The gameplay is a mix of turn-based combat and puzzles. The story is somewhat predictable, but the way it's told is what makes it so charming! I also really enjoyed the humor, I found myself chuckling quite often
