Love this game. I play it nearly every night and rarely have trouble finding people. But the developers left it behind with Meta, and it will no longer receive updates. Kind of a shame. I will continue to play for as long as there are people, or up until I find a decent replacement.
basically dead, since the frequency of the updates is way too low and the content of the updates are just minor.
All the complaints about the Meta acquisition followed by the port to Quest are completely true and valid, yet this still manages to be my favorite VR shooter. The pacing is perfect for VR, the mechanics are polished, and the core gameplay is excellent. If I find something I like more, I will switch to that. Until then, Onward is my go-to. Note it will be much more fun if you bring a friend --finding good teammates in random lobbies can be hit or miss, but mostly miss.
I previously played this game on Quest as I got the Meta Quest+ subscription free for 6 months after buying the Quest 3, and the first month of that subscription allowed me access to this game for free. Despite thinking I wouldn't like it as much as other leading VR FPS games like Pavlov or Contractors, this game quickly grew to become not only my favorite VR FPS, but also my favorite VR game in general. Despite Quest not tracking hours in games, throughout the past months I've had my Quest 3 (and Onward) I've easily spent hundreds of hours within the game, which, when taking into account every other VR game I own has likely less than 20 hours of gameplay, you'll realize is quite a lot. That being said, after all the hours I've played in this game, I've noticed only three major flaws that somewhat impact the experience of the game, that being the following: 1. Graphics Quality: Onward is known for its infamous update which led to it being available on Quest at the cost of the graphics being severely downgraded on both Quest and PCVR (as to allow the Quest to smoothly run it and PCVR to not have an advantage with the graphics) however, I believe that while yes, having better graphics WOULD make the game a number more enjoyable, the downgraded graphics don't impact the experience of the game TOO much. After all, while bullets are flying overhead as you're laying down with a VR headset on trying not to be hit, are you really going to be paying attention to the lower quality graphics around you? This game does an AMAZING job of being immersive, so the answer is no. 2. Repetition: Especially within multiplayer, once you play the game as much as I have, you start to realize patterns and repetition between maps. Despite having a community workshop of maps, there is a point to which you will be playing the same maps over and over which can eventually get boring. To anyone looking to buy this game and if it's worth it, don't let this fact deceive you because the game has plenty maps to keep you entertained for hundreds of hours, and this repetition still doesn't quite bother me too much but a larger workshop of community maps (or official maps) would be highly enjoyable. In addition, Onward has quite a lot of variety in things to do as well. 3. Playerbase: Yes, this game can be filled with children who were born an hour ago and are already laying their hands on a VR headset. While some lobbies can be filled with these players, most aren't and you'll almost always have a relatively enjoyable experience, so don't let this discourage you either. All in all, this game is 100% worth it, and that's all there is to it. Are there ways it could improve? Yeah. But, that's just a fact with every game.
when you dont get crossmapped at the beginning of each non-respawnable round by a ♥♥♥♥♥ on a mountainside, its very fun
Immersive Tactical Shooter at Its Finest! Onward is one of the most immersive and engaging VR first-person shooters available today. It sets a new standard for tactical realism in virtual reality, offering an experience that feels incredibly lifelike. The game's focus on teamwork, strategy, and communication creates an intense and rewarding multiplayer experience. The controls are precise and intuitive, allowing for natural weapon handling, reloading, and movement. Whether you're coordinating with teammates to secure objectives or engaging in high-stakes firefights, the attention to detail makes every action feel authentic. The environments are diverse and well-designed, enhancing the overall immersion with a variety of realistic maps and weather effects. What makes Onward stand out is its emphasis on strategy. This is not a run-and-gun shooter—planning and coordination are essential for success. The game encourages players to communicate and work together, making it a thrilling experience whether you're playing with friends or joining a squad online. In short, Onward is a must-play for fans of tactical shooters and VR enthusiasts alike. It's a game that pushes the boundaries of what virtual reality can achieve, offering a deeply engaging and realistic combat experience. Created with <3
Alright, I would like to begin by stating that Onward is an amazing game, although it has a few downsides I would definitely recommend picking it up if it's on sale or if you find a key for it. Onward is a multiplayer VR tactical shooter with multiple different game modes and a decent selection of firearms to choose from. It has decent graphics that look really nice when set to ultra on higher end GPU's but on its lower settings can be ran on a GTX 1650 (I played it on Medium with my old 1650). As far as firearms go, it would be nice to have some more, but you have the essentials (AK47, M16, MP5...). It has plenty of good starting maps, with modded map support built into the game although, bots no longer work on custom maps (01/15/24). It also has cross platform, meaning your friend can join you on their Quest 2. If your friend has Onward or you want a more realistic tactical VR shooter, Onward is for you. That being said, I would also highly recommend looking into Contractors VR as well, as it has better mod support, more custom maps, more firearms and better graphics. But despite all the negative reviews it's got, Onward is a really fun game, especially if you have friends to play it with.
