About
Hey folks, Jason Rohrer here. After 8+ years of existence, the Discord server had devolved into a very unfriendly, negative, and drama-filled place. It had gotten to the point where I didn't even like stepping foot in there myself, and every time I did, I regretted it. I considered just closing it down entirely.
I recently took some very big steps toward cleaning it up, appointing a new outside moderator (a personal friend from real life who has a very level head), and banning anyone who was continuing to be unfriendly and negative (including some of the old moderators, some of whom who had become ringleaders of negativity and personal attacks).
Of course, the people who got banned are upset, and (surprise!) they are review bombing the game.
But it's pretty amazing: in just one day, the Discord server is already much more calm and friendly and positive. I'm sure game sales will be temporarily affected by this review bomb.... but... well... something had to be done.
Thank you for taking a look at One Hour One Life anyway, which is a deeply personal game that I sunk my heart and soul into.

A multiplayer survival game of parenting and civilization building. Get born to another player as your mother. Live an entire life in one hour. Have babies of your own in the form of other players. Leave a legacy for the next generation as you help to rebuild civilization from scratch.
Hey folks, I'm Jason Rohrer, and I spent more than 6 years making One Hour One Life. I did everything myself---I drew all the graphics on paper with pens and markers, I coded the entire engine from scratch, I composed and performed all of the music*, and I even made all of the sound effects. It's a very personal game, and it's really unlike anything else that's out there. It's also a huge game---over 4,400 fully interactive, craftable objects and over 2,400 hand-drawn sprites. The game was initially released on my own website in February of 2018 and then later that year on Steam. Over next few years, I released 154 weekly updates as I aimed for my goal of making the largest, most comprehensive crafting game in history.
Okay, so what about the game itself?
First of all, you only live for an hour, where each minute marks a passing year. You join the game server as a newborn baby, and some other randomly-chosen player is your mother. You depend on her for your survival. And why will she be willing to waste her valuable time and resources to keep you alive? Because she's going to die in an hour just like everyone else, and if she wants what she accomplishes in her lifetime to have any meaning, then the next generation (aka, you) is her only hope. And if you survive into adulthood, you may get the chance to have babies of your own---other players, just joining the server---and those babies will be the next generation that gives meaning to your own life accomplishments.
Across this ever-growing family tree of generations, players are collectively conducting an enormous project: they are rebuilding civilization from scratch. The online game world starts out as a near-infinite expanse of wilderness (four billion meters wide from east to west, and four billion meters wide from north to south, with a total surface area of over 18,000,000,000,000,000,000 square meters, or 36,000 times bigger than Earth). The very first player to join the server is Eve, and she starts out in the wilderness as the root of the family tree. Eve and her immediate offspring lay the foundation for the future civilization, perhaps making a few primitive tools, cooking basic foods, and starting a small farm as they scrape out a meager existence before dying. Future generations will build on this primitive foundation, eventually mastering more and more advanced technology, including domesticated animals, metal working, permanent buildings, engines, transportation networks, photography, electronics, and even interplanetary travel.
But as real-life history has shown, civilization is fragile. A generation that is born into the lap of luxury---on the backs of their ancestors' hard-won accomplishments---can just as easily squander their inheritance as build upon it. Key resources run out over time, so careful management, planning, and organization are necessary to prevent an inevitable collapse. Thus, the game graduates from the individual challenge of primitive survival in the early stages to a group organizational and leadership challenge in the later stages. How do rules and procedures for group survival propagate across multiple generations? What did our great grandparents have in mind for this village?
The main mode in the game involves being born as a helpless baby to another player as your mother, but you can also play with your friends as twins, triplets, or quadruplets. One baby is hard enough to take care of---any mother that can successfully take care of quadruplets deserves the eternal gratitude of you and your friends.
All of this is happening on my own centrally-managed, persistent servers, and your purchase includes a lifetime account on these official servers. After you buy the game, you can instantly connect to this world with no configuration or server set-up. It all just works. You also get access to the full source code, including the server code. Technically-minded folks can run their own private servers, or even use the powerful content editor to make their own mods.
And once you master interplanetary travel in the game, you will gain access to Another Hour Another Planet, which features an alien world where all game elements and artwork are made entirely by the community.
I hope you'll join us as this sprawling civilization-building experiment continues to unfold. Many tens of thousands of players have already collectively lived over 3.7 million hours in this endlessly-changing world so far. Over the life of the game, he average playtime for each player has been 22 hours, with over 1100 players logging over 500 hours each.
No two lives are ever the same, and a new story always awaits on the other side of the [GET REBORN] button.

I love this game with all my heart, but I cannot in good conscience recommend it. For years the dev has fostered and enabled a hostile environment by refusing to moderate either the game or official community spaces. Then he acts surprised when the community calls him out on it and after years of not moderating begins banning long standing members. Hate speech and racist posts are welcome but calling him "childish" is unacceptable apparently. He says he wants a community that reflects his values, and unfortunately those values include normalizing hate speech and Nazi jokes. I regret recommending this game to someone irl who got it for her 9yo niece. She informed me that she immediately refunded the game. There are no warnings that this is an unmoderated space for children where anyone is free is harass, proposition, and doxx other players. His updated game description that the Discord suddenly devolved is disingenuous and insulting. As part of his free speech absolutism there were channels where users were freely able to call other users sl*ts and wh*res. But God forbid you call the dev childish or a psychopath. And for the record, I was not banned from the Discord-I left of my own volition.

The creator of this game has always described this game as a social experiment. You get born into a family where people may or may not take you under their wing and teach you new skills. But people might also get distracted by griefers, you may be killed before you are of age, and in your time in this game you will read more slurs than you want to. Besides that, you will see the hard work of you and your fellow wholesome players destroyed on more than one occasion. There is something genius about this game, but also something absolutely soul crushing. If you look at my emote, you might recognize some of the OHOL art style in it - but I switched to play the modded version 2HOL about five years ago. (It's hosted elsewhere by other people, and has expanded into what I thought OHOL would be when I bought the game in 2018) In 2HOL, it took me years to unlearn the distrust towards other players that OHOL had instilled in me. If I saw someone walking around with a knife, I thought the animals in our town were all going to get killed. If I saw someone with a shovel, I thought they were going to undo the boar pen and set a boar loose. If anyone asked where the bear caves were.... well I certainly didn't think they wanted to go and hunt them themselves. This distrust took me years to overcome by playing 2HOL - which is moderated, so griefers usually don't get away with much at all. I found a great and wholesome community there, and am glad I made the switch when I did. I have 4000 hours in 2hol vs 400 in ohol. OHOL was a social experiment. 2HOL proved it could be wholesome, cozy and displaying all of the best sorts of creativity mankind has to offer. OHOL proved that discriminators and griefers that aren't kept in check ruin your community. And sadly the main dev has never made much of an effort to stop them. Currently his active discord community members seem to be mostly comprised of griefer alt accounts, who are only sucking up to the dev in the hopes some of their accounts will be unbanned. The good people? Well a lot of them were banned from his discord for getting caught up in a discussion where they asked the dev to remove a last name that rhymes with "grape" from the game. He found they didn't represent his values and argued that most of his players were male... So that made removing the name that rhymes with grape unnecessary. (And then he shared a list of first names of his buyers, which is another can of worms no one consented to.) I didn't mention the antisemitic and racist players you will encounter in the game either... But you'll encounter them too if you buy this game. So I can't in good conscience recommend OHOL to anyone and feel it should be 18+ - this type of toxic community should not be accessible to minors. Shame, really, because I did meet some great people in this game while I played it, mostly thanks to Twitch streams (which currently no longer happen), but sadly the cool folks have all moved onto other games, and all the griefers that were around back then are still around now... So yeah... (To the griefers: I don't blame you for any of it. Griefers gotta grief, and it's clearly labelled a griefing game. But I do feel the potential and good name of this game was wasted in order to keep you around. That's on the dev. )
I discovered this game ~2021,, long after the developer had already stopped adding content. Honestly, I was fine without new content because a game life goes quickly and there's only so much you can get done. But my main issue has always been the lack of moderation in the game. (There are a few bad apples who crave attention by griefing in-game, so I'm not about to give them any here). While the developer has made some improvements in deterring some of the griefing in-game, it's hard to fully contain it. This is why we've been BEGGING for moderators in the game. Unfortunately, the developer has no interest in moderating the game, and refuses to give moderation power to anyone else. His logc? The hypothetical scenario where a moderator or team of moderators (that's chosen by him based on years of established trust in the community) might go rogue and become the biggest griefer of them all. When we complain about the griefing, he says we're being too sensitive. When we complain about anything he's doing, eg: defending the griefers, he says we're being ungrateful and he starts banning people from his discord server. I mean... the irony of saying we need thicker skins coming from someone who gets so upset over an iota of criticism is rich. I've been 'putting up' with the toxic, clear disdain the developer has toward his loyal player base because I truly love this game. At its best, the game is full of beautiful, heart-warming moments and I cherish all the friends I've found through this game. But he's reached new lows in the discord server. Note that the quote ascribed to him from a review posted yesterday/tody is accurate... I saw him say that in his OHOL discord server. (I heard he also got banned from discord -- likely for that comment). I have been playing this game for years, with probably close to 1000 hours (played via a mod; not tracked by steam). Based on how things have been, and continues to go -- I just can't see how this game can be enjoyable without a developer who cares. If he's not going to care about adding new content, he could at least show he cares for the player base as humans. We just want to enjoy a game without hate speech and without being killed. I wouldn't have thought that would be too much to ask for.
i do not recommend buying this game. imagine trying to build a town where everything you create is constantly destroyed. soon enough you find yourself imprisoned in the nursery, forced to watch yourself and your crying babies starve to death while hearing slurs thrown in your face. the moment you log in, you have to prepare for the next attack. the griefing goes far beyond killing and destruction. griefers engage in prolonged harassment, follow you around with weapons for hours, manipulate entire towns to mass-curse innocent players abusing an in-game anti-griefer mechanic to ban their accounts from active gameplay (for five real life years!). it has even escalated into griefers recreating n*zi regimes and threatening others into complying. players are hesitant to openly oppose them for fear of loosing accsess to the main server with their accounts ending up in an isolated in-game region called donkey town. the dev does not merely tolerate this behavior. he presents it as funny and interesting gameplay while banning players who criticize his approach. minors being exposed to prolonged verbal abuse and nsfw content is of zero concern to the dev. the official ohol discord has consequently stopped being welcoming to anyone who feels deeply disturbed and frustrated about the current state of the game. there is nothing wrong with having villains or conflict roleplay in a game. the problem is when a small group of griefers is allowed to make destruction and harassment the dominant experience. i was trying to understand the dev's perspective on free speech and unmoderated gameplay before, but it now seems clear that he wants his game to become yet another slur pvp and his discord to be a churchyard where he can receive nothing but praise, not to mention the continued doxxing of players' real-life names and email addresses... if you are looking for cooperation and community building, please check out 2hol. it is an actively developed ohol fork with lots of new content, a wonderful community, and respectful devs and mods who appreciate their players.
Do not buy this game unless you are prepared to have the developer either post your name, your email address or your phone number in his public discord server and/or call your mom. I genuinely wish i was joking but bro has 0 regards about your privacy, he even doxxed where some CHILDREN lived earlier this year and saw nothing wrong with it. He also has a penchant for causing drama and saying controversial and gross stuff then banning people the second he gets called out because his feelings got hurt. A little quote from the developer himself on Nazis in his discord server: "Also, it has been like 85 years, so it's not exactly too soon, and Nazis and Hitler are pretty damn funny.... that silly little mustache, and so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ serious and strict an German, etc. I sometimes wonder what would happen if you all saw the original 1967 film The Producers, which is widely considered to be one of the funniest films ever made..... I feel like a bunch of you would just die from outrage. So... Nazi's with big erections? I mean... I don't want it greeting people on the homepage, but everyone I showed it to laughed their asses off." - Jason Rohrer 08.08.26 The game has basically been abandoned by the dev in terms of content as well, so expect absolutely nothing from the game in that regard either. Honestly you're better off playing either 2HOL (which actually has moderation and content being made), or you are hope - i would not recommend wasting your money on the cesspit that is OHOL <3
Stay away from the game unless u want a developer that is barely adding content to the game and he finds Nazi's and Hitler funny bans everyone from his discord server that disagrees with that he even got soft banned in discord because of that statement and then he demoted all mods + made someone very shady the only mod. DO NOT BUY
It's a shame the developer has done such a bad job managing this community. He has taken something people love, and consistently made and shared horrible and disgusting decisions and opinions. I can't recommend this game to anyone anymore, the concept is good, but the actions of the Jason Rohrer aren't excusable.
The game can be fun, but the developer's behaviour has completely ruined it for me. There are some pretty serious concerns around how players' private information has allegedly been handled, including people having things like names, emails, or phone numbers exposed publicly. That's not something I think should ever happen over an argument about a game. I've also seen enough of the developer's interactions with the community to be really uncomfortable with the way criticism is handled. There have been personal attacks and comments that I'd consider hateful, and it just makes the whole community feel hostile. It's a shame because there's a genuinely interesting game underneath all of this. But I can't really recommend giving money to a developer when I have this many concerns about how they treat their players.
The game is fantastic, but the developer has crashed out. First and foremost: Jason if you want to sue me for leaving a bad review, do it. I don't care. Yes. The dev is threatening to sue everyone leaving bad reviews. Let that set the tone. He has used personal information inputed to purchase the game to contact people in real life without permission. He refuses to remove harmful features despite the community begging him to: families may have the last name "r*pe" and people will use the name and then try to roleplay harmful actions, many instances of Nazism, and people buying the game to harass others, refunding, then buying another, rinse and repeat. Certain players have threatened people with bodily harm and r*pe both in game, and via DMs on Discord. Among many, many more things that any sensible dev would shut down in their official public servers or Discord. The Discord for the game has been an absolute mess for a long time, but his opinions on "free speech" boil down to: anyone can say and post whatever they want that is harmful/hurtful to whoever they want, until he thinks you are criticizing him in even the tiniest way. He has had mods, but completely tied their hands so that they cannot moderate, until recently when he decided he wanted to ban the mods, ban positive members of the community (including long time players that have never done anything wrong, long time content creators promoting his game for years who also have done nothing wrong, etc.). After banning a lot of good people for no reason, he has also decided to *unban* everyone that had been banned for genuine reasons. People who only want to hurt other members of the community. He is showing his true colours in how little he actually cares about his community, and wants to only enable the worst sides of it to ruin everyone else's experience. It is incredibly sad to see such a beautiful concept completely torched by the dev himself.
