About

The year is 198X, and you're a jobbing composer. You start out with nothing but a toy keyboard shaped like a tiger, and a brand new sequence-o-matic 4-track that your uncle bought from a shady geezer in the pub.
Word quickly spreads about the new producer on the block, and soon the commissions are rolling in. Things start humble, recording tracks for weddings, workout videos and corporate presentations, but before long you're getting asked to score fantasy movies, museum openings, and all kinds of crazy stuff.
Of course, you'll have to upgrade your kit along the way. Turns out, the local second-hand magazine is a treasure trove of objects that make interesting sounds, from singing garden gnomes and shredders-that-shred-sound-as-well-as-paper, to high-end synthesisers and musical effects. By the end, you'll have figured out a sound that's all your own.

But OFFBEAT isn't just a game. All the musical instruments are fully simulated, and the music you're recording is real. The game is secretly a complete audio production tool. Every piece of music you create in the game gets exported and saved locally on your computer as a WAV file, which you can use for whatever you want.
Music production can be costly and complex to get into, especially for beginners. We created OFFBEAT to lower barrier to entry and to offer a playful, low-pressure way to learn the basics of audio producion. The goal is just to be expressive and experimental, but by the end you'll have learned a little about synthesizers, sound design, composition and recording. Our hope is that when the game's finished, you'll have the confidence and expertise to carry on composing and recording music.

Fun instruments, a gnome, and the jobs give you some framework so you have something to base your creativity on - and not as daunting as a DAW and installing VSTs haha.
It's been such an easier and more fun time for me to get into music production after getting overwhelmed by complicated DAWs. How the toolset expands with new toys and modding existing ones has been a really nice way for me to learn and mess around with different elements. I'm really excited to see the future updates!!

I was incredibly skeptical if this game would actually teach me anything and. I've learnt a lot! It's a wonderful place for people to enter music producing. I've wanted to learn music producing for a long time, but beginning was way to daunting. This changed that.
as someone thats used many sequencers, offbeat is by far the most fun obviously, but its essentially a sequencer learning tool, and its perfect, you can make custom jam tracks and in the loading screen it tells you ANYTHING YOU MAKE IS YOUR TO USE!!!!!! ive had PLUGINS that make you require a $300 license to use publicly, but privately you can use it, so its a trap, OFFBEAT is completely free of this greed and evil, fantastic game, very punk
i like making silly songs also somehow has a better workflow than fl studio

pico8 fruitloops fun af, no prior music knowledge required
couldn't finish the spa music because I refused to submit an imperfect song, despite having absolutely zero experience making music 🤩 all my tries sounded either very suspenseful or like a desperate dying cat anyway, the game is fantastic, I'm literally recommending this to everyone. making songs in a game is something we don't see very often, and all these different instruments make it much cooler! just to be clear: I only refunded the game to get the oblique version without having to buy the standalone game again.
The fact that this is a gamified DAW, that teaches you some music production skills is pretty sweet. I produce music in my free time, so i was instantly hooked. if you have any interest in music production its a good buy.
"I have 27 hours in Whetstone Games' OFFBEAT. It's where I learned all of my music theory." -- Skrillex Jokes aside, it's a surprisingly deep and informative little music simulator. Create 8-bit songs with various "instruments," some of them more realistic than others. The Producers Handbook adds a pretty good amount of instruction, including lots of music theory. Fun to see your creations come to fruition throughout the process. I only wish there was a way to make songs with odd time signatures, or split notes in half. But, I might not be good enough to know how to do that. 9/10
