About

The year is 198X, and you're a jobbing composer. You start out with nothing but a toy keyboard shaped like a tiger, and a brand new sequence-o-matic 4-track that your uncle bought from a shady geezer in the pub.
Word quickly spreads about the new producer on the block, and soon the commissions are rolling in. Things start humble, recording tracks for weddings, workout videos and corporate presentations, but before long you're getting asked to score fantasy movies, museum openings, and all kinds of crazy stuff.
Of course, you'll have to upgrade your kit along the way. Turns out, the local second-hand magazine is a treasure trove of objects that make interesting sounds, from singing garden gnomes and shredders-that-shred-sound-as-well-as-paper, to high-end synthesisers and musical effects. By the end, you'll have figured out a sound that's all your own.

But OFFBEAT isn't just a game. All the musical instruments are fully simulated, and the music you're recording is real. The game is secretly a complete audio production tool. Every piece of music you create in the game gets exported and saved locally on your computer as a WAV file, which you can use for whatever you want.
Music production can be costly and complex to get into, especially for beginners. We created OFFBEAT to lower barrier to entry and to offer a playful, low-pressure way to learn the basics of audio producion. The goal is just to be expressive and experimental, but by the end you'll have learned a little about synthesizers, sound design, composition and recording. Our hope is that when the game's finished, you'll have the confidence and expertise to carry on composing and recording music.

A very charming Early Access title that will only get better as the developers introduce more instruments and improvements! It's a pleasant gamified music making experience that encourages you to explore and create whatever, while helping newbies not fret too much about the music theory and technical sides of music production if they don't want to. Been loving it so far and I'm looking forward to what comes in future updates!
Been waiting ages for a game just like this. Absolute boatloads of potential

I've been experimenting with music production for almost a year using a conventional DAW (FL Studio), but find it hard to stay motivated to practice, try new things, etc. Thankfully, Off Beat came onto my radar at just the right time and is exactly the kind of thing I need to keep creating. The simplified structure, clear prompts, and the focus on exploration and creativity are all wrapped up in cozy vibes that make the process of making music accessible and fun.
Very well designed, uses many small tricks to help build your confidence (Such as starting you off in a single key) before throwing you into more complex functions, that and the job system really helps give structure, heavy recommend!
Set up some loops. Circuit-bend some old gadgets. Make some cool music. ??? Profit! - As someone who's been into music for a long time, and messed around with the likes of Reason and Logic, etc. This is a pretty neat way of introducing a newbie to sequencing that isn't all that weighed down. And makes it a lot of fun in the process. ...It really takes me back to when I was first starting out. :)
now i dont have to pay 1000$ for a music studio app, thanks
I love it. I love that it has the quests and missions and it's not just a new music making toy/tool but it has a bit of story to go with it. I love the art style. It's not a perfect game but it's a great game and I love it.
To start to get it out of the way, please keep in mind this game is early-access which unfortunately brings it to a halt and makes the current release of this game shallow. Despite this, the 5 hours I've spent with this has been an absolute joy and inspiring. Whether you have never touched music production software before, have dabbled, or a pro I think this game will help anyone tap into their musical sensibilities. I've had on/off stints of music production and felt right at home getting into the swing of things here. The game helps you through so anyone can become a musician. At the time it's short but it's packed with a lot of unique detail that genuinely has me wishing the full-release can come sooner than later. The instruments themselves are unique and offer a decent amount of variety. Those with much more musical knowledge can stretch their usage more than I could. Regardless of this, the upgrades included offer a larger library of sounds to be used. Keeping 4 instrument on the deck can feel limiting but at the same time helps prevent too much of a mess being made. Moving from job to job was a great way to teach new instruments/upgrades and did a great job of making each one feel unique. Eventually I'll be jamming more just to make my own unique works. Overall I would absolutely recommend this game. The visuals are unique, the sound is impressive which is big for something like this, and I genuinely want to go back and create more music and look forward to future updates. At this price now, I think anyone interested in music production should dip their toe in using this game.
So happy about this development, truly something to benefit the freakin society for once. I can only appreciate the efforts of the dev team and admire the creativity of the work in progress. Am an Ed-Tech professional with masters degree in IT and Education. I can assure you, the pacing of the learning curve is very well designed, the content of the "tips" or "messages" to keep you trying new stuff is positive and allows exploration of the tools in a increasing level of new functionalities, so it is ideal to learn new skills and the design of the elements and dialogues make it adequate for small childs, to chill millennials gamers up to grandparents if any of those are willing to have a good time learning something new and have fun. My personal advice, just flow...Dont use all the instruments all the time, read the *RED BOOK* in the desk UP TO THE LAST PAGE and get your own pace. For me it was fun to create simple tunes and beats to unlock more features ASAP, but I can imagine people taking their sweet time to create fun masterpieces of ringtones to send to their new digital uncle or complex gothic dungeon orquestal extravaganza for the basement lady that lives below your new digital uncle... My only worry is about the "export" system implemented to recover the tracks created in .wav format... Not sure it works properly, maybe because am in Linux, but I think it sometimes leaves out some instruments or beats in the rendering process... Am confident the devs are gonna get it perfect with time. Looking forward for a success for the Alpha release, big kudos to the devs, you guys are the bees knees. Edits: Typo
