It takes time and practice, but the more you play, the more both you and Tristan evolve and gain an understanding of what is happening around you.
Learn to stand up for yourself using different weapons, environments, and active skills. Tailor your fighting style to suit you, from the agile rapier wielder to a heavy armour-clad knight, or create something unique!

Immerse yourself in a story full of twists, humor, and discoveries. Step into the shoes of a man who is destined to become much more than just a cartographer. Gain strength, survive, and forge alliances. Prove that even someone who has lost everything can become a significant force that can shape the fate of the whole world.
Talk to locals to learn about their daily lives, and help them with tasks. Watch how people’s opinions of you change as your character grows. Join one of the two major factions and complete its unique storyline to earn exclusive rewards. Your actions and choices will also affect the world and the characters around you.

Of Ash and Steel has no marker system, and quests won't lead you by the hand. Rediscover the joy of exploration and let curiosity be your guide; the world promises rich rewards for those who dare to uncover its secrets.
Listen carefully to what people tell you and pay attention to what is said in the quests to find your way. Read books and notes to learn more about the world. Mark interesting locations on your map, explore the island, and uncover hidden treasures!

Highly recommend. Good story, good combat. I especially like the fact that the game doesn't hold you by the hand by placing markers over your next objective. You actually have to listen to instructions and figure things out for yourself. Feels very refreshing after Bethesda's Skyrim and Fallout, which, don't take me wrong, I also greatly enjoyed. If you remember Piranha Bytes studio and particularly their Gothic series, you'll feel right at home. For me, the game stutters only on autosave, otherwise no issues. Came across few minor bugs, like getting stuck in land geometry, CTD when selecting Continue game from main menu instead of loading a specific save. Once crossbow became unusable. It wouldn't reload and was unable to unequip it in inventory, but I believe this particular issue was caused by installing certain mods mid-playthrough, seems to be working as intended after starting new game after installing mods. Overall, definitely recommend.

For scale, across Steam · Top Sellers · Brazil over the last 30 days: the 22 chart moves that followed a price cut of more than 20% went a median of 9 places towards #1, and the 2,513 moves with no price cut behind them went 2 away. One store, one chart, one country — it is the only place we have enough observations to say even that.
Prices outside the United States have been collected since 6 August 2026 and chart positions since 19 July 2026, so a cut older than that has no market to compare and a market that joined later has no history yet. Nothing here is converted between currencies.

Nawet w Gothicu bez mapy wskazywali ci drogę, a tutaj nic idziesz na ślepo i wpadasz w jakieś zasadzki z ciekawości.
Intersting game, but can't recommend in current state, keeps softlocking and crashing to much
Update: I am in my second playthrough with newest patch and mods now. The performance was drastically improved. I have barely any stuttering now and the loading time was also cut short by a mile. No more problems when moving from one area of the map to another as well. I will leave my initial review below untouched for transparency: First of all: If you liked Gothic and Risen 1 you will love this game. I was sceptical about this game first because the facial expressions of the characters in the intro and the videos looked like everybody had strokes all the time. I don't actually care about graphics very much, but this look in particullar gave the whole game a weird and "cheap" touch in my opinion. Then a streamer I watched played the game and I had the possibility to see some gameplay before actually buying it and it looked quite good. So I bought it and started playing. The tutorial is very linear, stict and limits you a lot but is not that long. Afterwards you can go and explore the world, and that is when the game really starts: The best way to describe it is by comparision to Gothic 2. You get a mission that is quite vague (go and deliver a message) and then start completely alone, without equipment, without any combat experience and without knowledge where the f*** you are. An NPC gives you a rough direction where to go and that's it. You have no map (in the beginning, you will get one much later in the game), so your compass and the signs along the main "road" are your only way of knowing where to go. The game shows you right from the start how it will treat you: "So you skipped the dialog of the NPC that explained the way to a specific location? Well, how do you expect to find the damn place then? Map marker? Nope. Ask for direction again? Nope. Have fun looking for the place." When I write that I noticed that this sounds frustrating, but it really isn't. Because you can find the way if you listen. And you can find it as well when you spend a lot of time looking. And exploring the world is the best thing in this game anyway. Go a few steps of the main road and you will find something. A ruin, monsters, rare plants, a chest, a locked chest, a buried chest, a buried locked chest, a buried locked chest with a combination lock... You constantly get the feeling that you just found something amazing and that feeling is that satisfying because there are very meaningful and strong things you can find. Yet it is also balanced so you don't get too strong too quick. This balancing is honestly the best I have ever seen, because they manage to keep it for pretty much all of the game which is astonishing considering that I spent over 200h on my frist playthrough (I am a full-explore kind of gamer). The fighting system is solid. You start completly without any fighting experience, so your swings are wide and slow. Miss the first enemies too much and they will kill you quite fast. I spent a good amount of time trying out how to beat the first few enemies. So fighting can be really challenging on the highest difficulty, but if the fight is too tough, just run away. The enmies in this game are not scaling in any way, so build up your strength, come back and beat the sh** out of them. The writing of the characters is also very close to the gothic vibe: You get a "F*** off!" more often than a "Good morning", expecially in the beginning of the game. The characters all seem to have their own agenda, and a lot of them don't trust a stranger in the beginning. But you can also feel that they warm up to you once you helped them a bit. For that you need quests, obviously, and they have quests. A lot of them. Most of them are not hard or long but they also are not the "go and kill 5 boars" type of quests. A lot of chars that give you a quest have follow up quests as well, which more or less build up on the previous quests. The main story is ok but definetly not the strongest point of the game. Now let's get to performance. In summary: It is bad. Very bad. I had a lot of stuttering in locations with a dense population. To get rid of it for one or two hours I needed to restart my PC, but than I have to load again and the first load after a restart is very long. On the plus side there are only a few places in the game where you have to actually load a new location before going there. To be exact you only need to load if you teleport or enter the capital, which makes sense because it is huge and crawling with NPCs. Setting aside teleport and main city the game loads constantly the surroundings to prevent loading screens, but they implemented a pretty smart way to minimize loading assets (thats what I guess it does, at least): There are "choke points" beween a few regions that you have to pass through before entering the new region. all other ways are blocked by walls or mountains or something of the sort. And when you pass through these passages you can feel that it's loading a loooot of stuff in the background. I even had sometimes the bug that the floor of the next region would not load fast enough, so you can fall through the floor of the map.... At some point I started to make saves everytime i passed one of these points, just to be save. So in summary: It is a very good and very addicting RPG and the best recreation of the "gothic feeling" since gothic 3. Even Risen 1 was not as good as this because it was too small in my opinion. I had an absolute blast playing the game, even with the bad performance of the game.
I tried to like it! I really did! But as a part time player A game with no quest markers its not going to work. I log back in after a week or so, check the journal and in the quest says head east over yonder and ye will find what ye searches for beyond a moutain and past the village, dont forget to ask Bob in the field to the south-west what his fav food and to buy some in the shop to the north before you leave. Hopefully one day there will be a mod
