very good
one of the better souls like games!
Pros: -Beautiful looking world with a dark atmosphere and a variety of diverse environments -combat that feels chunky in most instances (especially with the riposte attacks which are amazing) and fluid/smooth -enemy design (not necessarily movesets while some do have cool moves, I mainly mean the enemies look cool) -not overly difficult (which could be a negative in somes mind yet I see this game as a good entry for new souls-like players) -interesting weapons that all have cool movesets -really good performance and optimization given how great the graphics are -the available shells are great with their own stories and abilities that make it worth using each of them (yet it has been said that it would likely take numerous runs to see all of the shell memories) -exploration feels rewarding with beautiful vistas to see and items to find -the devs seem to be well aware of the bugs and issues which is a huge plus -interesting and fun tarstones to use that can greatly change how you play (while I do agree with many others that some of them are just useless to use and don't make much of a difference) Cons: -ENEMY DAMAGE: despite the Day 1 patch, enemy damage can still be absurd. There will be numerous enemies and as many have already said, the mid to late game areas house a lot of these enemies who can easily either one to two shot you or take 50% of your health. This comes particularly annoying and frustrating -SUMMONS: while I never used these at all I tried them a few times as I was curious at their effectiveness and found them to be rather useless. While I don't know their specific stats, their health pool and damage is nonexistent and there is really no point in even using them and I would rather tell a struggling player just to focus on learning a boss's moveset instead of relying on a summon to help -BEACONS: there are numerous areas in the game with one example being the right region in Fanweald that severely lack any sort of checkpoints. While many might chalk this up as being meaningless negativity or complaints, it comes to a point where when you couple together the fact that a large majority of enemies deal a absurd amount of damage and that regions often have chunks where a lot of enemies are concentrated in that area leading to a situation where you are left with little to no healing items and are forced to either trek back to a previous beacon or push through and rush to find a beacon before engaging with anymore enemies -DUNGEONS: While I found many of the dungeons to be fun and with decent variety, what I didn't really like is a similar point that I made with beacons. If there are extensive areas with no beacons, going into a dungeon and possibly dying means that you'll have to run through an are with a large concentration of enemies just to get back to your lost gloom. This gets easier to manage as you get stronger but it can be vert frustrating. An idea that I think could work is something akin to the dungeons in Elden Ring where if you end up dying, you'll get teleported back to the start of the dungeon with a stake of Marika -AUDIO BUGS: I encountered numerous audio bugs that as far as I could tell, ALWAYS required a full game restart to fix. One of them was a very minor one in which if you opened the map while on a moving lift, the lift will continue to make noise as if its still moving even as its stops. Another one I encountered was a general issue where audio in certain corrupted gate dungeons would entirely cut out and this also occurred in other areas of the game but it appeared to be random (I never bothered checking to see if it happens consistently) I'd give this a 8/10 despite the issues. I personally did not find them severe enough to derail my playthrough and at most they were annoying. Given most people's opinions on souls-likes and the seeming over saturation of them in the market, I'd say this is a very solid entry and one that should demand your attention with it having enough diversity from others in the genre with overly better combat, exploration, and a "generally" more polished experience.
Good
No matter what settings used @ 4k, the game is blurry. This is sadly normal for UE 5 games, but it is still worth pointing out. Even Preset M/L did not fix the blurryness. Reflex is causing stutters, and there is no way to turn it off without an engine.ini file. Doesn't matter if you use FG or not. Problem is doing so adds another 25ms of input latency, but does help the stuttering. 90 fps felt more like 30 with how bad the stuttering can get. Frame gen itself won't turn itself on half the time. No matter if the option is on or not in options, FPS is the same. First time I've ever seen that with FG. Film grain/motion blur/vignette options are broken and do not work currently. Also need to be removed via an engine.ini file. This game was definitely rushed and it sadly shows. Lots of cut/missed corners. Will probably end up refunding and trying it out again at a later date after some fixes. It's rough currently. Can't recommend it in its current state. There is potential here, there's just a lot of technical issues that ruin the enjoyment for me. The open beta did not have many of these issues by the way, so I am unsure what happened.
