About
Mind Over Magic is a colony simulation game developed by Sparkypants and published by Klei Publishing.
Build and optimize a magic school while keeping powerful mages alive and inspired. Prepare them to explore the horrors of the Underschool, a deadly subterranean gauntlet. Study lost arcana, grow exotic plants, brew potions, and raise undead servants. But don’t forget to stop the deadly fog from consuming everything in its path.
Build the ultimate magic school, brick by brick. Design every room to fit your vision. Unlock new furniture, wallpaper, lighting, and decorations to personalize every detail. Experiment with layouts to discover hidden efficiency bonuses and create the perfect balance of design and function.
Beneath your school lies a mysterious labyrinth filled with dark secrets, deadly magic, and ghastly creatures. The deeper you explore, the greater the rewards—but danger doesn’t always stay underground.
Research and discover mystical beasts to serve your school and unlock powerful new resources. These creatures require food, affection, and magical care to grow into valuable allies, providing rare materials for crafting and construction.
If you're truly ambitious, tackle the challenge of raising a dragon to aid your school. Dragons demand specialized students to become caretakers, but in return, they grant your mages the ability to embark on daring quests beyond the school walls—uncovering secrets, gaining unique powers, and shaping the future of your academy.
Bend the arcane to your will. Practitioners of Dark magic animate undead helpers known as Quilted—specialized constructs that gather resources, tend to plants, repair damage to your school, and mine valuable materials.
Make the most of your day by reducing travel time in your ever-growing campus with the power of flight. Strategically place broom racks to make traversal a breeze.
Enhance your students abilities with powerful gear, such as potions, relics, and increasingly powerful wands, each granting distinct magical advantages. Customize their daily schedules and assign teachers to shape their magical growth.
Magic isn’t just for combat—what your students learn and the tools they wield also determine how effectively they contribute to your school’s daily operations. Build a curriculum that fosters the ability to both survive and thrive.
Shape the future of magic by customizing your students' education. Apprenticed students can multiclass to wield a diverse array of spells, or strive towards single discipline mastery to unlock devastating ultimate abilities, powerful enough to face the dangers of the Nexus.
Reality is tenuous in the Nexus, a fractured realm of pure magic deep beneath the school. Your mages will need every advantage to battle powerful enemies, reconstitute its crumbling fragments, and break the curse for good. Train wisely, for only the most skilled mages can withstand the challenges that await beyond the veil.

Cute colony sim that fulfills it mage theme well!

It's okay Not great at explaining anything, doesn't have any real way of teaching you combat. By that I mean combat is shallow, and needs depth. Throws too much resource requirements at you too soon. Relaxed is the opposite, can't teach you anything because there are no requirements. Unfun learning experience. Worth 50% off I suppose
Great game, had a lot of fun

Fun game, kind of like Oxygen Not Included, Rim World, Dwarf Fortess etc. meets Hogwarts. If you like those games, you'll like this.
I was a ghost and I don't know how I become one. All I know I have a mission to build school mages in this cursed land. Names Maxwell BTW. I try to recruit 3 mages to help me organized the school. They are wolf dude name Edith, a doll guy called Hector and a male human, Matilda. We try to build and construct some room. Due to my inexperience, it was a rough days for us. No food and my staffs have to sleep on the floor except Edith. He seems he has his way for getting his own food and doesn't mind sleeping on the floor like wild animal. Days has passed. we finally manage build some basic stuff like a classroom, a crafting room, a kitchen and also a room for my staffs to sleeps. And we finally manage getting everything run and perform 1st ritual to repel the cursed fog. All seems looks normal, except one day Edith comes to me and request me that he want to be the same room with Hector. Uh well, sure I don't mind. And just like that, now they are roommate I guess? Ahem...anyway let's continue Then after several days later, we finally be able to teach some students. They are 2 doll dude names Birdie and George, a beautiful wolf names Clara and 2 human boy names Francine and Allan. Clara and Allan about to graduate. They both looks so excited and this is the first time I graduate my student. I and 3 staff held ritual ceremony. Allan goes first as we channeling our energy on to him. The light shine bright from his body and then poof. He turn into cracking comb. Clara scream. Me and my staffs stare in surprised and confused. I open my codex book and realize that by graduate them, it means turning them into relic. The hell? I flip the pages if there is a way to turning him back. But unfortunately there is no way to return him back. Matilda suggest we should just keep it and I agree. I reassure Clara that we won't do that graduation again. She just sobbing and nod. Poor girl, she must in shock. As an alternative, we promoted them into staff. Getting more help to run the school isn't a bad idea. After days pass, we have more new students. There are some students moment I cannot forget. One of them is a bird race name Dax. He just loves tree and plants. And he got himself killed 2 times and have to revive him 2 times, trying to be friend with trapdoor vine. Talk about plant enthusiast but now he is an expert of plants. Then there is a nerd wolf boy name Lazio. I force him to do dancing lesson all night long just to appease a dragon that want to reach its puberty. I smack his face, yelling "WERE YOU RUSHING OR DRAGGING?!!" every time his off the tempo. Then there is also a human boy names Maven who is the slowest and the most useless in the entire students that I ever meet. But his commitment is another level. He kept pushing himself through the research and studies relic every day every night. Now he is the master of all them and with his devastating lightning, he is the one leading the group who defeated the final boss. Ok, seriously this is absolutely a very fantastic game sim building. With many challenge to me you engage, it didn't bored me through the end. I usually stop playing sim game when things get too comfortable but this one doesn't do that at all. One of my complain is the UI design should be more friendly. For the complexity, I think it do the great job as I can understand through the help search and informative codex. Definitely recommended this game those who like challenge sims game
Played for only an hour and... this game is so boring. I am not the biggest factorio fan or anything remotely close, but I do enjoy my fair share of city builders (like laysara, tropico, simcity, etc). This game... has a similar art to don't starve, but the gameplay itself is incredibly tedious and lacking. In other games, you have some ways to fasten up the grind... here you can't. You'll be spending most of the beginning just farming stones and waiting for resources to pop out... as you cannot store them for some reason. They need to fix the storage stuff, it's silly how I have to wait like ten minutes in real life... to get the required mats to craft whatever I need. Most games have skipable tutorials, this one doesn't and you also don't know what your end goal is. I understand you're supposed to explore and combat in the basement area, but the things to do on the surface are extremely lacking and repetitive, you don't wanna come back to this game (if you wanna make it an autoplayer, at least give us the tools to do so). Refunded, there are better city builders and roguelikes out there. On a sidenote, if you want a "casual" game experience, this game isn't meant for you. Even from the beginning things are really convoluted. They throw a bunch of resources at you, expecting you to farm them over and over, except you end up using the same 3 of the 10 you start with. COmplexity is part of the fun in these games, you're supposed to unlock things slowly, and get introduced to different/better resources over time, not start with all the available resources right from the get go.
I picked this one up because it reminded me of Spellcaster University, which I really enjoyed. This is similar but with far more freedom in design + additional features in resource accrual and dungeon crawling. Definitely worth the purchase. I've really enjoyed learning as I go, although there was a learning curve for the first few hours to uncover all of the design elements and how to ensure production / building went smoothly. It is far more complex than I ever thought it could be! The variety of room development is *chef's kiss* a real treat, trying to meet the requirements to "upgrade" the room gives an element of spice to your castle design that I feel has made me far more creative than what would otherwise likely be a tower of square rooms stacked on top of each other. Seeing a lot of review comparisons to ONI - which I also love - I'd say it's like ONI in terms of getting certain rooms to increase production, and the variety of production types in farming and food you have. I didn't really get that strong of an ONI parallel though, so I wouldn't recommend off of enjoying ONI alone. If you enjoy tower building and production management mechanics in general with a survival fusion, you'd enjoy this.
I quite like this game, sometimes it can be a bit tough, or stagnant, but the building is fun and interesting. the exploration below is engaging, and building the wizards once you get far enough to do so can be quite fun. my only complaint was the building limitations, though somewhat recently they made it so you could disable most room tags, allowing you to build much more freely. I will say, I am unsure if its still in the game as it was for me, but at one point, there was a room type, the best room at doing science, which required no entrance, no connecting rooms, and some other crazy stuff... it took a while to understand, but the entire rooms existence was so that you could have a ghost do science at the same pace a regular, no perked up person might do science...which upset me greatly...stupid ghost room...
