About
Mind Over Magic is a colony simulation game developed by Sparkypants and published by Klei Publishing.
Build and optimize a magic school while keeping powerful mages alive and inspired. Prepare them to explore the horrors of the Underschool, a deadly subterranean gauntlet. Study lost arcana, grow exotic plants, brew potions, and raise undead servants. But don’t forget to stop the deadly fog from consuming everything in its path.
Build the ultimate magic school, brick by brick. Design every room to fit your vision. Unlock new furniture, wallpaper, lighting, and decorations to personalize every detail. Experiment with layouts to discover hidden efficiency bonuses and create the perfect balance of design and function.
Beneath your school lies a mysterious labyrinth filled with dark secrets, deadly magic, and ghastly creatures. The deeper you explore, the greater the rewards—but danger doesn’t always stay underground.
Research and discover mystical beasts to serve your school and unlock powerful new resources. These creatures require food, affection, and magical care to grow into valuable allies, providing rare materials for crafting and construction.
If you're truly ambitious, tackle the challenge of raising a dragon to aid your school. Dragons demand specialized students to become caretakers, but in return, they grant your mages the ability to embark on daring quests beyond the school walls—uncovering secrets, gaining unique powers, and shaping the future of your academy.
Bend the arcane to your will. Practitioners of Dark magic animate undead helpers known as Quilted—specialized constructs that gather resources, tend to plants, repair damage to your school, and mine valuable materials.
Make the most of your day by reducing travel time in your ever-growing campus with the power of flight. Strategically place broom racks to make traversal a breeze.
Enhance your students abilities with powerful gear, such as potions, relics, and increasingly powerful wands, each granting distinct magical advantages. Customize their daily schedules and assign teachers to shape their magical growth.
Magic isn’t just for combat—what your students learn and the tools they wield also determine how effectively they contribute to your school’s daily operations. Build a curriculum that fosters the ability to both survive and thrive.
Shape the future of magic by customizing your students' education. Apprenticed students can multiclass to wield a diverse array of spells, or strive towards single discipline mastery to unlock devastating ultimate abilities, powerful enough to face the dangers of the Nexus.
Reality is tenuous in the Nexus, a fractured realm of pure magic deep beneath the school. Your mages will need every advantage to battle powerful enemies, reconstitute its crumbling fragments, and break the curse for good. Train wisely, for only the most skilled mages can withstand the challenges that await beyond the veil.

I am only leaving a good review if you have a better PC. I was playing this on a 3050, 32GB ddr4, i5CPU, full case of fans... on lowest settings, it constantly ran 90-100% GPU, with temps in the 70s-80s. I am pretty sure this game is what bricked my GPU. Thanks. Why in the hells are 3050s so expensive?!!? Nut jobs trying to scalp old tech... xD I decided to upgrade my PC after that happened. I can now run this game insanely smooth. Max everything I am getting 60 FPS, My GPU is running at like 30%-40%, with temps in the 40s lol. Oh yea, don't play this on a steam deck unless you know how to optimize it. Otherwise you will just brick that as well. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- As far as the game itself goes. Do you like to manage NPCs running around your map? Do you love magic related media? Do you enjoy turn based combat? Do you enjoy infinite replayability? Do you like hardcore modes? Do you like sandbox modes? Do you like being able to customize all the rules in game? Do you like never having to use a wiki for a game? Do you enjoy building games? Do you enjoy racing against a clock? Do you enjoy casual mode? Do you enjoy min / maxing? Do you enjoy not min / maxing? Do you enjoy games like Against the Storm, Rimworld, Fallout Shelter? I know some of these contradict each other, but the game is highly customizable, pre made settings, and also adjustable rule settings. You don't like the game on 1 mode, you can make a new school with different rules. As far as I can tell you can have as many as you want school saves. It even shows a screenshot of part of your school to remind you of your failures :P You can also change difficulty settings while in your game. If you want to really have fun I suggest the highest architecture style you can handle. That is where the game gets really fun with the building. The game doesn't really seem to have much for lore or story to it. It is more about a race against the fog creeping in to murder hobo your school. Which you can also turn off if you don't like that feature or even slow it down a lot more, if it is moving to fast for you. Right now I am just playing a school on max everything, low combat stress, no fog creep, unlimited building, no need to research. Just trying to see how big of a school I can make before my PC does start to feel it some. Freeform architecture style is speeding that up a lot for building faster. Pro tip, press down T to give yourself a tilt angle in the game to see some things better!!!

The game itself is pretty alright, I love the artstyle and character designs as well as some of the gameplay but there are just so many tedious and annoying things that always make me stop playing the game after an hour. Room requirements suck, I'm fine with the base version of each room having different attributes but upgrades really make it hard keep your old room. You often have to completely redesign/rebuild each room to upgrade it which makes it so not fun if you always have to rebuild a lot of your school just to meet the requirements of one room. Same with the students and apprentices, fulfilling their requirements to make them worth to keep or good enough to turn into a teacher is such a hassle too. Sometimes they have really specific needs that take ages to take care of. Progression is rather slow due to the issues mentioned above, same with furniture and items being quite expensive so you somewhat have to grind for them. I'm fine with that but not if it feels very boring and slow to do so. Trying to get the best characters for your school often results in trying to satisfy their needs in ridiculous ways which quickly kills the fun or even progression, especially if the game decides to throw a lot of ♥♥♥♥ at you because you seem to be doing too good. The game scales difficulty so if you finally catch a breather, you will quickly get dragged down by receiving 4 random orphans with curses or some other stuff happening to your school. It's an okay game but quite frustrating a lot of the time. I never had that experience with other games in the same genre. It's unfortunate but at least I still had some fun with it. The first couple hours of each playthrough are probably the most fun you'll have.
Очень залипательная игра, где нужно в меру подумать. Контента предостаточно. Но в начале сложно, нужно будет несколько раз с нуля начинать прежде чем результат покажется удовлетворительным.
This is a gem of a game. It incorporates aspects from many other games like the Sims, Might and Magic, and adds your favorite survival tasks to your school of magic. There is an updated tutorial that sets some goals to progress early while also having a codex that fully explains where and how to get certain materials. The research tree is vast and adds tons of new items and upgrades to the game. Its not particularly grindy and stays fun even when you have to do some repetitive tasks. You can automate everything or engage with everything yourself. There is a freeform mode where you can build HUGE buildings for your school or combine everything all together like a Wizard hotel. So far, so fun. Will update later when I get deeper into it.
Mind over Magic is beautifully designed with great love for details, which I enjoyed discovering. A friend recommended it to me after reading you were able to build your own School of Witchcraft. It also seems very beginnerfriendly to me and still lets you play hours and hours. I also really like the mix of building, gathering, designing and fighting.
Mid. Cool game if you wanna do all your research on google to figure out how to play it.
This game is deeply strategic. Running a magic school is just a backdrop to that
Amazing base builder game dressed in "magical outfit", I attempted various playthroughs since very early development. Recently came back after an update and will keep playing. Worth the full price.
