it evokes nostalgia in this floatiness it has, like halo reach forge island when i used to just build things that i would've liked exploring, expressing the sense of wonder within me ; more so the locations of pre-world monster hunter, like the swamp and the jungle (with the temple) so mysterious and i'd love to know more, but so little information i can only imagine played it a 3rd time with the added dev commentary and learning that the dev is same age and gender identity as me makes me wonder how much more sensibilities we have in common because this is one of my favorite games i have played. the rust, the decay the ferns i love it all. makes me feel like sex, lies and videotapes by soderbergh, hazy heavy and moody some work to be proud of bravo Aleksandra

Saw a youtube video about this game and immediately knew I had to try it - it was not disappointing my expectations at all! From the start on out, I knew that the sense of vastness and maybe also loneliness conveyed by this world was astounding, especially due to all of the distant structures and the skybox. The combat and jumping mechanic are also enjoyable, and I love all of the little ambushes (I genuinely jumped in my seat once or twice at them). Beyond that, the game has an amazing story, despite its simplicity, as the plot ties everything together neatly and the player isn't left with many questions! Truly a work of art!
I've seen a lot of games exploring megastructures in recent years but this is one of the best IMO, really gets the sense of scale right and there are lots of very cool details in the design and writing. I felt like I got a good sense of the setting from just the few scraps of writing and encounters. The gameplay itself is excellent, the movement, combat feel, and level design are top notch for a small indie work. Reminded me a little of F.E.A.R. in terms of level design. Lots of fun nooks and side paths that I actually felt motivated to explore. Environments were easy to read, had lots to find if you took some time to look, and the platforming and puzzles were pretty satisfying and never felt frustrating. If you are half decent at FPS I would recommend playing on Hard, the middle difficulty was fairly relaxed and easy. If I would change anything, the enemy AI didn't feel very threatening and more environment hazards would have given the combat a little more flavor, but considering the scope I think the right decisions were made with what was done, and they used what they had very well with lots of fun encounters. I think if you took this and worked on more intelligent enemies, you would have something almost as good as F.E.A.R., but I don't expect that to be an easy task. Awesome work and looking forward to more!
Nice little game. Short and Sweet. The concept of mega structures serving as the backbone of a setting is a very interesting but surprisingly uncommon thing in games I think. The only other example I can think of would be Gravity Rush 1 and 2, games that take place around a huge world pillar. The gameplay of Metal Garden feels kinda stiff and floaty imo but the atmosphere, the vibes, carry this game. I did my first playthrough with Developer Commentary turned on which i thought would be fun, which it was, but it also spoiled a couple of upcoming encounters which kinda took away from the surprise in a couple of areas. The infos about things coming up in later chapters were fine, but things like "You can ambush these enemies from above now. But after that you get ambushed" was kinda,,, eh. I mean thanks for telling me but now the surprise is gone lol. I think it would've been more interesting if commentaries talking about such encounters would be placed after said encounter, and not right before them. I appreciate the transparency in those though, especially just the dev straight up admitting to not liking a certain puzzle room or running out of time and settling for everything to just be concrete in one area.
Interesting and challenging map design, cool megastrucutres with great puzzle solving and parkour aspect, optional areas for furhter exploration with additional rewards, tricky enemy spawning put challenges and suprises for the first-time playing. Decent shooting mechanic with varying wapons to choose from (Yet I feel like the scope of the sniper riffle could have a higher zoom). Cool background story that reminds me the Japanese managa "Blame". Amd the gameplay itself seems to have a strong impression from the half-life series I enjoyed this game so much, I would love to see a sequal or DLC for it
It is a -very- short game - I wish it could have been longer. The level design is quite creative, even having some satisfying and unexpected loopbacks. It's usually quite clear where the game wants you to go. The game sometimes throws a few gotcha moments at you but you very quickly learn where and how to expect them. I think there could easily be a couple more levels in there which showcase the megastructure a bit more. The ones which are there feel quite terrestrial and only the final level really allows the game to stretch its legs, as it were. I wish we could have seen a little more like it. The inspiration behind the game is very clear and extremely direct, from the couple of logs you can read. It's the mother of all megastructure stories, and Metal Garden is a delightful interpretation. ---Light spoiler--- The ending has a very visible objecty with a misaligned texture, which is a bit sloppy. While the ending is interesting, it could have ended with a bit more of a 'bang'- Let us at least see what the bottom looks like instead of giving a text screen! The text would work better as an overlaid subtitle as you reach the final destination, letting the player explore the vista a bit and letting the screen fade to black as the last sentence is completed.
Its rare you find a game where you just can't stop smiling for most of the playthrough. This was that game for me. The ambiance and atmosphere is amazing and feels so unique. Games like this renew my faith in video games and remind me why I love making and playing them. The feeling of experiencing such a rich and well crafted world with so much love poured in to it never gets old. I can't wait to play it many more times to read the developer commentary and find all the secrets. Highly reccomended.
