peccato, il chierico era figo
Une bouse sans fin.
2014’s Lords of the Fallen is now over ten years old, and with the release of the 2023 reboot/sequel it’s plain to see just how far developers Deck 13 have come. It’s not to say the 2014 version is bad by any stretch of the imagination, but it doesn’t do anything spectacular either: a shorter, less-polished, more frustrating Dark Souls clone that attempts to copy the former’s innovative ideas without managing to capture its, pardon the pun, soul. The story is about as generic as you can get. You play as Harkyn, an ex-prisoner who is led by a mysterious monk named Kaslo to a fortress monastery on the edge of a portal leading to the demonic realm of the god Adyr. You’ll slaughter your way through the monastery, eventually crossing over into the demon realm and back again. The environments are admittedly nice to look at, but there are only two main areas, and you’ll end up traversing them multiple times with little meaningful changes apart from enemy type and placement. The combat will either make you love or hate this game. Deck 13 took the slow, methodical combat of the first Dark Souls and dialled it waaaay down further. Your character moves and fights like a Space Marine, or perhaps more aptly a Cog from Gears of War. The screen shakes with every meaty step. Oversized shoulder pauldrons hide bulging muscles. You are a walking tank, and everything about the combat epitomizes this. If you are looking for a fast-paced, dodge-heavy game, look elsewhere. In fact, despite there seemingly being several class types, the beefy warrior really stands head and shoulders above the rest, as the enemies are generally faster than you and hit like a truck, while everything your character does, from swinging a sword to casting a spell, looks like he’s stuck underwater. A lot of the earlier battles boil down to a war of attrition where you wait for an opening, take a swing, and hope it connects. As the game progresses, however, your character’s speed is no longer an issue, as you become so powerful it doesn’t really matter. You’ll unlock spells that give you unlimited stamina for 30 seconds, or shield and heal you, or stun groups of enemies. The tactical aspect of combat is moot when you can tank most hits while whacking away with your oversized hammer or greatsword, up to and including the final boss. Lords of the Fallen is short, especially with so little late game challenge, and although I did warm to its heavy, crunchy, combat, I could never quite shake the feeling I was playing the shade of a better game, one that’s better balanced, a tad faster, and with a more engaging story. Luckily, ten years later, that’s exactly what Deck13 will release.

14 on sale1 answered “not sold”0 we did not ask
The 1 “not sold” market is read from the Steam price pass of Sep 11: that day the store answered for this game elsewhere and gave no price there. The 14 priced markets are the same rows as the table above — each the latest price we hold, dated here when it is older than that pass. The 0 marked “not asked” were not put to this store at all — either it has no storefront there or we do not collect it yet, and neither is a statement about the game. A refusal is a refusal on one day; a store can list a title again tomorrow.

Heed the negative reviews! Save yourself the time. Let it go. If you find yourself thinking, "Surely, it's not THAT bad." and then you start playing and you think, "I don't know what people are talking about. This is pretty good actually!" Just wait... That's what happened to all of us. It's not that there's anything aggressively bad about it, it's just that it's so boring. Never mind the seasick camera. I just couldn't bring myself to keep playing. Play ANY other soulslike. This is the worst one there is. Heed the warnings! Speak truth to your curiosity! There are better ways to spend you time.
I genuinely don't know who thought making a souls-like so awfully slow and clunky would be a good idea. Perhaps it wasn't that big of a deal back in 2014 but by today's standards it is borderline unplayable for most people. On top of that I found the world and enemy design to look extremely boring and uninspired from what I saw in those 17 minutes (and on YouTube).
