I'm only a little bit into this game and it is honestly a treat. I enjoy feeling the exitement to play through a game again. I won't go into any specifics you can experience them yourself. That being said there are not that many games that have this level of detail and charm. I found out about this game through the announcements of their second game. I will 100% be getting that one too.
Really good vibes
good, but not great and I believe that all of its flaws are understandable as this is their first game, but I'm also really impressed especially since there is a squeal being made that'll build upon this one Its biggest issue for me is its story, its writing is very muddy, abstract and disjointed for the first half of the game. I know they were going for the magical spectacle of visual story telling here, but the term spirit guide can have a hundred different meanings and it isn't very clear what Kena actually does and what is going on besides corruption taking over. early cutscenes and dialogue between characters are pretty short and don't tell the player much and i mean for the first 7 hours before conversations between characters explain critical information. Once you get it, it makes sense, but I'm baffled they decided to go with a script like this. As characters talk about needing to finding people as if they are still alive and even when you beat the first couple bosses the cutscenes of that character can go over your head as they don't make it clear that the gold mist means the souls left their bodies, but they just didn't realize they were dead yet. A better way is the first time you spirit guide the person you are looking for dies in the game and you kill the corrupted boss and then in an emotional moment you spirit guide them, that would have explained the player a core element of its story. Even after I got it, it did make emotional moments not hit as hard because of this lack of clarity. Its combat was a ton of fun and it was challenging but not too difficult of the spirit guide difficulty. Every upgrade was important and by the end this fast paced swapping whatever i have recharged, parrying, using the rots to distract to charge up shots and getting in as combo just to dodge in time was pure fun. Its platforming was also fun, idk what more to say but areas that require precise arrow teleports, bomb explosion timers and dashes were a nice chance of pace. Yes the game looks mostly beautiful, its impressive how skilled ember lab making a vibrant world with attention to detail, especially the way the corruption would melt away bring the land back was so cool to see in real time like that. And the music, man this was a real highlight in its cutscenes and in the open world was like a movie. However where it does stumble in some areas is its optimization, i don't know what it was like for everyone else, but the game ran perfectly fine until the final boss. When he does the attacks with a ton of particle effects its stutters to a slideshow for a 5 seconds before reverting back to a high frame rate, and I'm running this on a 4080 super. It didn't matter if it was DX 11 or 12 same issue. Also I know its because they were using unreal engine 4, but the ambient lighting is very short and it doesn't make the art style look as good as it would be, this is especially obvious in caves where it can be pitch black sometimes when it feels like distant lights were supposed to reach it. A good chunk of the exploration is kind of a waste of time, while the karma currency is what you want to upgrade your skills, a lot of it is crystals that are used to buy cosmetics. Normally that's fine but going off the main path and spending sometimes 30 minutes exploring everything in a area and doing the optional combat challenges to receive no karma at all is a little frustrating. Lastly a good chunk of the open world is dead space as i call it, a pretty set piece for a cutscene or walking through for the first time, no doubt but collectables and loot is so scattered across the world, that despite having fast travel it just felt like a quarter of the time you were running through these unusually very long stretches of nothing (in a game sense) to get to where you want to go. Overall this was an enjoyable game, it did a good job at being fun but was also missed potential to be a really exceptional action adventure with an original movie quality story. However I am very excited for Scars of Kosmora now that Ember Lab is being published by Sony and have access to Sony's technical infostructure, high end motion capture studios, more developers to help and dedicated UE5 engineers to create a possible 10/10 experience as this is already a good foundation. I'd say get this at $20 at most
