Try to remember or imagine looking at games in the early 2000's and seeing between the big strategy titles that bunch of cases and names you never heard of with some insane coverart like a huge robot squashing the White House with DC burning in the background and big old DISCOUNTED stickers burying SALE stickers which bury NEW PRICE stickers on each and every one of them. Rise of Legends, for the unimaginative. The screenshots on the back of the (barely used or never opened) box look decent enough and it's just a bargain bin game so you get it. You play it and are still disappointed but there is just enough there for you to be like "I wish somebody else would do this better". This is that sort of game. You will be disappointed, but it's decent enough for $5 and a couple of bored days. Realistically, it is either a "I told you they weren't up to the task after Iron Harvest" when DoW4 is underwhelming, or it's "Everybody has to start somewhere" when DoW4 is good. Fingers crossed, but the state of the animations, sound design, and story in Iron Harvest kind of don't bode well for an RTS series sold on those merits moreso than depth.
The game that brought back the RTS in 2020 is fun! Whoda thunk? I played through the Demo so I've got more time in this than this suggests. It's a solid, classic style rts, but in the 1920+ universe, WW1 with mechs. The story campaigns are good so far, the world is interesting. It's not exactly hard, but I had a world ranking that hovered around 200 back in the glory days of AOE2, so YMMV.
