gewoon heel erg leuk spel om te spelen
as someone who watched the first two seasons of inazuma eleven and played one of the original games on the 3ds when i was wayyy younger, i wanted to play this for ages and only recently sunk my teeth into it after beating the entire story mode and a little bit of the first arc of chronicle mode, i can safely say that this is the best inazuma eleven game ever made. it is the ultimate evolution of everything that came before it and it oozes with a passion for the previous games and the show that is hard to come by in games nowadays. there are hundreds and maybe even thousands of characters from the games and the show that you can recruit to your team and play against people online or in chronicle mode where you can really build your team and break the limits of whats possible in the base story mode. there are also tons of different team builds you can mess around with. one of my favourites is the counter style which gives me bonuses for intercepting and stealing the ball. its great! don't even get me started on the story, the last match made me cream. 10/10 (...theres also animal crossing style town building)
I really wanted to support this game. I bought Victory Road believing that this was going to be THE Inazuma Eleven game for the foreseeable future: something I could invest my time into, come back to regularly, and watch grow over the years. And that wasn't an expectation I simply invented myself. During development, LEVEL-5 explicitly stated: “We want to create something that can be enjoyed for about 5 years once it's released.” You can still read it on their official development blog: https://www.level5.co.jp/blog_inazuma/en/230916/ That statement mattered to me when deciding to put my money and time into Victory Road. When a developer tells its audience that they want to create something players can enjoy for around five years, I think it's perfectly reasonable to expect a serious long-term commitment to that game. I expected years of support, improvements, new content and expansions that would keep building upon Victory Road. That's the kind of game I thought I was buying, and it's part of the reason why I was comfortable investing my time into it. And yet, not even ONE YEAR after Victory Road's release, LEVEL-5 has already announced Inazuma Eleven: Bold Revolution as a full sequel. Not a major expansion to Victory Road, not another chapter of the supposedly long-term experience they were building, but an actual sequel. For me, that completely changes the perspective under which I purchased this game and seriously damages the confidence I had in LEVEL-5's long-term plans for it. To be clear, I know LEVEL-5 never literally said “we promise we won't release another Inazuma Eleven game for five years.” I'm not claiming that they did. But there's a huge difference between the literal wording of a statement and the expectation you deliberately create around your product. If you publicly tell your customers that your goal is to create something they can enjoy for approximately five years after release, you can't be surprised when those customers expect the game they're buying to remain the focus for considerably longer than a few months. Announcing its full sequel before the first anniversary feels completely at odds with the long-term vision that convinced me to invest in Victory Road in the first place. And that's why I'm leaving a negative review despite having almost 20 hours in the game. I'm not pretending Victory Road suddenly became a terrible game overnight, nor am I saying that I played for 20 hours and then randomly decided I didn't like it. The problem is that my purchase wasn't based exclusively on what Victory Road contained on release day. I was buying into what LEVEL-5 themselves presented as a long-term project, and I was willing to continue investing considerably more time into it because I believed that vision. Had I known at the time of purchase that a full sequel would already be announced less than a year later, I genuinely would have approached this purchase very differently. Plans change, and obviously developers are allowed to make sequels. That's not the issue. The issue is how enormous the gap is between the expectation LEVEL-5 created and what has actually happened. “We want to create something that can be enjoyed for about 5 years” sounds very different when, less than a year into that supposed five-year journey, you're already announcing the next full game. Maybe Victory Road will continue receiving support alongside it, but that doesn't undo the fact that the announcement has fundamentally changed my perception of what I bought and what LEVEL-5's statements about longevity actually mean. The biggest consequence for me isn't even Bold Revolution itself. It's the loss of confidence in LEVEL-5 going forward. If I buy Bold Revolution and they tell us that it's another long-term project, why should I believe them? Why should I invest hundreds of hours into their next game based on promises or statements about its future when my experience with Victory Road has taught me that those plans can apparently change before the game is even a year old? I wanted Victory Road to succeed, and I wanted to continue playing it for years. That's precisely why this announcement is so disappointing. I bought into the long-term vision LEVEL-5 presented for this game, and less than a year after release, I no longer have confidence in that vision. For that reason, I can no longer recommend Victory Road.
