I don't understand why people bother with War Blunder when this game exists, sure the graphics and game are kind of dated but you can get this game for dirt cheap and install a modpack and now you have hundreds and hundreds of hours of quality WWII content.
Old Is Gold
The first thing that surprised me is how immensely satisfying the flying and physics still feel, especially considering how old this game is. The aircraft have weight, momentum, and character. Flying feels like you're actually controlling a machine rather than just moving a camera around the sky. Dogfights, takeoffs, landings, and simply getting a feel for an aircraft can be incredibly rewarding.
there's the ABSURD amount of mods and content
With the right mods, you can basically turn this game into a massive aviation museum and simulator. You can have WWII aircraft from different eras and nations, old propeller planes, early jets, modern jets, and practically everything in between. The BAT mod in particular is absolutely insane in terms of the amount of content it adds.Just be warned: if you're the type of person who wants everything, clear at least 100 GB of storage.
the graphics
The graphics are very dated. however, there's a solution! The game uses the ancient DirectX 8 rendering API, which naturally doesn't have many of the graphical capabilities we have today. You can modernize the rendering by using dgVoodoo2 to translate the old DirectX 8 rendering into DirectX 11. There are plenty of YouTube tutorials showing how to set it up. Watch a few and you'll get the hang of it pretty quickly. Once you've got DirectX 11 working, you can go even further with ReShade. You can add some surprisingly modern effects, including: -- MXAO (ambient occlusion) -- SSR (Screen Space Reflections) And plenty of other effects for improving lighting, depth, and overall image quality. The result can be shockingly good for a game this old. I've posted a few screenshots below so you can see the difference for yourself. This also works for Wings For Europe. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3784088524 https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3784090712 https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3655736023 https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3656534400 So don't let the graphics put you off. With a little bit of tweaking, 1946 can look far better than you'd expect, while still retaining that fantastic flight model and enormous amount of content. It's an old game, but that's exactly why I love it.

Ok unfortunately there is no middle ground in these reviews. I do enjoy the game and that's all it is. There is a very clear bias to Soviet aircraft. I put Ai Vs Ai and noticed that in many cases even "veteran" Ai loses in fights against Normal Ai as long as the normal Ai has Soviet airplanes. Also noticed virtually all allied aircraft spin when surfaces are maxed out and the Soviet ones.. rarely if ever do. Apparently most Soviet aircraft had fuel pumps...which is untrue while many allied aircraft even late in the war.. for some reason don't and in reality they did, I'm not the first to notice this. It sucks but such is the nature of games. Just like a particular tank game that favors Soviet tanks to an absurd and comical level. If you want this game on easy mode fly Soviet aircraft.
This game is not compatible with windows 11. Don't buy it.
Pure nostalgia, loved it as kid when it was new and still have soft spot for it. :3 Great for people who want something less arcade-y than Ace Combat but not as overly complex as DCS and don't mind how much is the game showing it's age - at this point it's historical not just by it's theme. :D Be advised - if you have monitor better than 720p you'll have to manually edit config file in the game's folder to set your monitor's resolution, otherwise the game won't even start. Other than that runs without issue.
This game brings back so much nostalgia of watching "crash and fail compilations" for this game on youtube in 2010's
If you are going to use a stick and throttle for this game: DO NOT BUY The game only assigns one of them and there is no way to assign the throttle while also having the joystick assigned, and the entirety of my playtime was trying to fix this. waste of money, would not recommend
